A nine race card has been assembled for Randwick on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:30) Magna Grecia To Coolmore Hcp 1500m
The Freedman camp is flying at the moment and I think they can continue their purple patch via 5 Exhibition (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS), who debuted over 1200m at Newcastle two weeks ago and worked home well from off the speed when fifth to Snazz’N’Charm in a race where they ran solid time relative to the meeting. Up to 1500m I like and is bred to handle wet ground.
4 Angel Helena (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden filly who was far from disgraced on debut at Canterbury before going to Hawkesbury where she had to dig in to get the win but credit to her, she did and finished best in a close go to the line. Off that Hawkesbury win, 1500m should be okay for her and will handle wet ground.
Silhouette is next best, but she’s the odds on pop, so for a long shot, hard to make a genuine case outside the trio just mentioned. Next best would be 7 Desert Flame (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS), who led and tired in the Warwick Farm maiden won by Silhouettes, seemingly getting every chance. Small field and stable with their youngsters at this distance range should get some respect, but would need to improve big time.
Race 2. (12:05) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1200m
11 Bad Boy For Love (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) can go close here for Gayna Williams. Ran in the 1100m Highway here two weeks ago won by Princess Cordelia and really liked the way he found the line late behind the Mitch Beer mare, clearly looking like a horse that will appreciate 1200m, which is what he gets here, and I think is knocking on the door.
4 Tejori (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) was one of a few who didn’t win when coming back in trip at the Randwick meeting four weeks ago. She won a 1200m Highway two back before coming back to 1000m four weeks back and was okay, but didn’t set the world on fire. On firmer footing, hopefully, looks more ideal for this filly and back up in trip a big tick.
6 Partners (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a key chance. Scott Singleton trained mare that spanked them in a Scone trial prior to resuming in the 1100m Highway here a fortnight ago where Singleton told punters pre race that the mare would give a sight but perhaps run out of condition late and that’s exactly what happened. With the run under the belt, hopefully she’ll be stronger this time around.
Race 3. (12:40) Grunt Standing At Yulong (78) 1000m
Really like 7 Longbottom (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) here. She was one of the runs of the meeting a few weeks ago at Randwick over 1000m when back last in an on speed dominated race but closed off with real purpose to run third to stablemate Witherspoon. Yet to prove herself beyond 1100m, so a fast run 1000m here I do like.
10 Star Of Harada (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a chance here for sure. Formerly with Terry McCarthy but is now with Wendy Roche and the gelding has done a good job in his few runs for the new stable. Ran last Monday at Warwick Farm where he was well specked at a price and he lapped up the conditions, winning impressively. Off that, he can measure up here.
Can see them going hard in front, so want to be something that will sit back and launch late out wide, and that criteria fits 6 Brazenpine (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS). Has been kept on ice since racing on the Kenso track when a little unlucky not to finish closer behind subsequent Stakes winner Fiteuse, so that form reads very well for this. She needs a dry deck, so hopefully this track can dry out somewhat.
Race 4. (13:15) Castelvecchio/arrowfield (78) 2000m
Leaning the way of 6 Elaborate (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) for the Freedman stable. Ran over 2400m here two weeks in a race dominated on speed by Terwilliker, who led them a merry dance, but really liked the way that Elaborate kept finding the line and got close to the win. Back to 2000m on wet ground should be fine for him, hard fit and in form.
1 Mount Popa (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) is a Team Hawkes trained import that made his Australian debut over the mile at Flemington where he was a bit tardy to begin with but he finished off his race pretty well I thought behind Honey Esprit. Did show promise when racing in France and up to 2000m is certainly a big tick. Does he need one more?
10 Birth Of Venus (Bet Now: 10.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver here second up. Chris Waller trained mare who resumed three weeks ago at Rosehill and didn’t really fire a shot behind Bound To Win but it was a meeting where making up significant ground was a task. Like her up to 2000m and her two second up runs in Australia have been good.
Race 5. (13:50) Winter Dash 1200m
6 Southern Lad (Bet Now: $2.25) looks the way to go. John O’Shea trained sprinter who was disappointing two back behind Coruscate but bounced back to positive form in the Bob Charley when a game second to Classique Legend. Did he find the A1 ground? Yes he did, so perhaps a touch flattered, but Classique Legend form is A1 for this.
1 Viridine (Bet Now: $4.40) is hard to beat on form but it’s been a little while between wins and he does have a poor racing pattern. Hooked from the gate in the Bob Charley last start and worked home strongly behind Classique Legend. He’ll be suited at 1200m you would assume and can sit much closer in the run from the inside draw.
The best version of 8 Jonker (Bet Now: $19.00) is certainly capable of figuring. Had just one soft trial leading into his resumption in the Bob Charley where he was chasing from a fair way out and couldn’t finish it off behind Classique Legend. Hasn’t done much since his 2YO days, but I think his best chance of winning will be if he leads and controls.
Race 6. (14:25) Heineken 3 (bm78) 1200m
1 Misteed (Bet Now: $5.00) is well and truly due to get one on the board and she gets a golden chance. Looked to get every hope last time out at this track/distance but in saying that she ran very well and it took a peach of a steer from Louise Day aboard Wandabaa to beat her. Randwick wet track looks her bread and butter, and this looks a lovely race for her.
2 Stella Sea Sun (Bet Now: $15.00) interests me. Kris Lees trained mare that hasn’t raced since the Provincial Championship Final when ridden far too warm near the speed and dropped out behind Through The Cracks. Trialled a couple of weeks back at Wyong and worked the to the line pretty well under riding, and didn’t wear Blinkers, which are off for race day as well. Her best is certainly good enough.
Third up from a break, 5 Voila (Bet Now: $9.00) should be close to peak fitness. Comes through the Wandabaa race from two weeks ago mentioned above that Misteed contested. Voila was ridden cold from the wide gate and didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight, but thought her finale was more than sound. Loves wet ground and has more upside than most.
Race 7. (15:05) Tab (bm78) 1200m
3 Superium (Bet Now: $3.20) is better suited on firmer footing, but even on a wet track, he’s better than these isn’t he? Has bumped into Adelong in both runs back from a break, the latest coming last Saturday when wide with cover and chasing hard. Can sit much closer in the run from the inside gate…wet track a slight query, but this is D-Day for him.
11 Hulk (Bet Now: $3.90) has been quite good in two runs back from a spell for Chris Waller. Showed good ticker to win first up on the Kenso track before stepping up to a strong Rosehill race three weeks ago when doing work in the run out wide and battled away well in defeat behind Mo’s Crown, finishing fourth. Can you trust him? Off the two runs this prep, yes.
2 Jazzland (Bet Now: $16.00) is the intriguing runner. Kristen Buchanan trains this guy, who is better suited over further and normally resumes over a bit further, but his recent Newcastle trial over 900m was very good to the eye. Loved the way he trucked along on speed and wasn’t extended at any stage. He’s a definite market and yard watch.
Race 8. (15:45) Ranvet (bm78) 1600m
Going to have a throw at the stumps with 5 My Swashbuckler (Bet Now: $35.00). Trialled up really well prior to his Australian debut on the Kenso track where he didn’t really fire a shot behind Spirit Ridge, but pulled up slow to recover, so there were excuses for him His French form does read very well and he had a rating over there of 84, so he’s got ratings points in hand here.
4 Mr Dependable (Bet Now: $3.90) is three weeks between runs for the WaterBott team since resuming over 1300m at Rosehill when wide and doing plenty of work near the speed. Was entitled to throw in the towel but kept finding and was really good in defeat behind True Detective. Has had the extra week to recover from that, gets to his home track and hopefully can get control in front.
I think back up in trip will suit the Clare Cunningham trained 7 Travancore (Bet Now: $13.00). Ran over 1500m at Rosehill three weeks ago in what was an on pace dominated affair but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Soldier Of Love in a tidy effort. Little query beyond 1600m, which is what the Randwick mile will feel like, but hard fit and overall, his form this prep has been good.
Race 9. (16:25) Sky Racing Active (bm78) 1400m
If this track can dry out somewhat, 1 Spencer (Bet Now: $5.00) is one of the better gambles on the card, but even with a genuine wet track, he’s still hard to beat. Two runs back from a break have been super, the latest at Rosehill three weeks ago when closing hard to finish second to True Detective. Gets more ground, hard fit…just wants a drying deck and he’s a near good thing.
7 Juventus (Bet Now: $9.00) is an honest animal for Kris Lees that more often than not is around the mark. Had a little freshen up prior to racing over 1300m at Rosehill three weeks back when somewhat held up at a vital stage but at the same time, he wasn’t going to beat True Detective, settling for third. Fitter and up in trip, runs well again.
13 High Low Bet (Bet Now: $12.00) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller after racing last Saturday at Rosehill where not much went her way in the run. Doubt she wins, but should have finished closer behind Word For Word. McEvoy found the key to this horse last prep and she did win on the seven day back up last time in.
