A strong nine race card has been set down for Belmont this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:52) FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PK PLATE 1200m
1 Trix Of The Trade (Bet Now: $2.60) looks a smart type for Colin Webster. 2/2 to start his career, the second win coming here last Wednesday when outside the speed and he really knuckled down strongly to get the job done. Confident he’ll take beating despite a tricky gate.
2 The Front Bar (Bet Now: $2.60) looks a really talented filly for Adam Durrant that was massive when winning here two weeks ago. She came with a brilliant finale under Pike to nab them on the peg. Small field helps, Pike remains on and has to be rested highly here.
5 State Of Power (Bet Now: $8.50) is a query at 1200m but has the right racing pattern to give herself every chance. That was the case over 1000m here last time and battled on okay behind The Front Bar. If she can stretch out successfully to six furlongs, she will take beating from the front.
Race 2. (14:32) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED (RS0MW) 1000m
1 Wilchino (Bet Now: $1.60) has shown a clear liking for tracks with give in it and with rain forecast, she will do me. Sat on speed at this track/distance two weeks ago and when Rawiller clicked her up, away she went and she was mikes too good. Similar conditions, she will take beating.
5 City Circle (Bet Now: $8.00) is an honest mare for Neville Parnham that should be around the mark. That was the case when racing here a fortnight back and tried hard, but couldn’t reel in Wilchino. If the track was firm, I’d say yes, but on wet ground, she runs well, but doubt she turns the tables.
3 Requisition (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Brett Pope trained galloper that comes through the Wilchino race. He got back off the speed and failed to come on in a plain effort. Jury out on how well he’s going but has got upside and is getting towards peak fitness so he’s heading into last chance territory.
Race 3. (15:12) CROWN PERTH (RS1MW) 1400m
9 Devoted Star (Bet Now: $4.00) isn’t exactly one of mine by I do feel fresh is best for her and three weeks between runs is a big tick, as well as Pike sticking. Ran here three weeks ago and closed off pretty well from off the speed. If she can use gate gate one go advantage, she’ll be hard to beat.
8 Glamour Packed (Bet Now: $20.00) is sneaky going well I feel. On paper, it was an okay run behind Notorious One but it was full of merit and she closed off quite well in a race where those right out the back weren’t overly suited. That form does read really well for a race like this.
5 Marlize (Bet Now: $9.50) hasn’t exactly ticked the metro box but she gets a great chance to change that. Beat a solid field last time out, beating home a proven metro performer in No Surrender. If she can get a suck run in transit once again, she will take beating at odds.
Race 4. (15:52) GLENROY CHAFF (BM66+) 2200m
10 Sugar Cain (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Team Williams trained mare that only runs for one rider, Willie Pike, and he is back on her for this. Game effort two back, then Pike jumped off and she failed to fire. Now he’s back on, I think you can back her each way and you’ll get a decent run.
2 Sluice Box (Bet Now: $2.90) is creeping up in the weights but he’s flying for Ashley Maley. Strong winner over 2000m here last time out, coming with a well timed run and finishing best. Bit harder this time around and creeping up in the weights, but he’s likeable.
3 Sowar (Bet Now: $12.00) is one for multiples. Steve Wolfe trained gelding that ran second to Sluice Box in that race mentioned above. He got a fair way back in the run and closed off nicely. If he can hold a forward spot from gate one, I think he could a dangerous player here.
Race 5. (16:28) IRON JACK (RS0LY) 1600m
4 Al Mahalo (Bet Now: $4.20) is starting to put it together now and I think he can measure up to Saturday metro level. Good tough win from him here last Wednesday. Chased from off the speed and knuckled down strongly to get the job done. He should take beating here in a winnable Saturday metro race.
1 Salon Du Cheval (Bet Now: $14.00) will probably never reach the heights he did when at his peak with Lindsey Smith but he’s going well and has the class to spank these. Good in defeat over 1700m here last time out in a race not too much harder than this. Has the weight but has the class.
6 Brother Paddy (Bet Now: $34.00) is around a month between runs since racing over the mile here when near the speed throughout and failing to come on behind Celtic Diva. His best is more than good enough to measure up. I’d watch the market and see what it does with him.
Race 6. (17:10) BLUE SPEC STAKES 1600m
4 True Attraction (Bet Now: $5.00) should appreciate the rise to the mile for Adam Durrant. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago and closed off pretty well from the back behind That’s Funny Az. The forecast for rain is music to his ears and up to the mile, he’ll take beating.
3 Montelena (Bet Now: $3.80) has a good third up record and that is her saving grace because the jury is out on how well she is going. Is she going any good, or has she needed the two runs back? I’m thinking the latter, but this is well and truly D-Day for her.
2 Friar Fox (Bet Now: $46.00) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. Just looked in need of the run behind That’s Funny Az in the same the above two contested. Best suited at 2000m+, and likely on a Kalgoorlie Cup path, so might need one more but has a touch of quality.
Race 7. (17:50) COOL RIDGE (RS1MW) 1200m
8 Gunmetal Grey (Bet Now: $8.50) is several weeks between runs for Ross Price since racing here against her own age as a 3YO when back off the speed and finishing off with purpose when second to Jedi Mind. Very genuine horse and should take beating against this lot.
4 Jag The Joker (Bet Now: $14.00) is an Ashley Maley trained gelding that is on the quick back up after winning here last Wednesday. He lobbed into a lovely spot under Pike and once he pushed the butting, away he went and he was too good. Harder here, but is a last start winner and his confidence should be up.
1 Zephyr Queen (Bet Now: $7.50) is a ripper for Jim Taylor that will put herself on speed and give her all. That was the case when she ran here two weeks back. Tried hard on speed but couldn’t quite finish it off. If she gets on speed and gets a cheap furlong, she’ll take some running down.
Race 8. (18:25) PENINSULA DINING ROOM (BM66+) 1000m
7 All Day Session (Bet Now: $4.80) is three weeks between runs for Ashley Maley since racing over 1200m here when back off the speed and chasing strongly behind Jedi Mind. Back to 1000m I find interesting with him but the speed looks as if it will be on and he will be strong late.
1 State Attorney (Bet Now: $6.50) is a former Adam Durrant galloper that had his first run for the Grantham camp a fortnight back here over this trip when back off the speed and closing off strongly when second to Starfield Impact. You’d like to think he will take good improvement from that and rates highly.
2 Weaponson (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Oratorio that resumes for David Harrison. This guy hasn’t raced since March 6 when good in defeat on Bunbury Cup Day behind Charleston Eddie. Trialled well leading in and gets in well after the claim. Leading contender.
Race 9. (19:00) HORSEPOWER-NIGHT @ RACES-BM72+ 1400m
3 Notorious One (Bet Now: $1.85) for me in the get out. The Gangemi team trains this gelding, who was 1400m back to 1300m when winning two weeks ago, finishing best in a driving go. Back up in trip I see as a positive and should lob in a lovely spot from the draw.
9 Vital Blast (Bet Now: $9.00) has similar form lines to Notorious One and commands respect. Ran a narrow second in the race mentioned above from a fortnight back. He was on speed and looked home but was nabbed late. If he can get near the front from the wide gate and not use too much energy, he’ll be dangerous.
8 Upward Others (Bet Now: $151.00) is a stayer that is clearly better suited over further, but I think can run a positive race fresh. Resumes without a trial, but the Bar Plates are coming off, which is a clear tick, so watch the market and see what it does with him.
