A nine race card has been assembled for the Gold Coast on Friday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out three metres from the 1400m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (11:42) Larry Allen Mdn Plate 1400m
3 Rebel Salute (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very interesting runner. Had a stack of trials for Kris Lees before being transferred to Michael Costa and didn’t have a trial for Costa before being sent to Team Guy. Has had two trials to get ready this prep for the debut and has won them both in impressive fashion, so think he has to be rated as a leading chance.
12 Isabella’s Spring (Bet Now: $2.30) is bursting to win her maiden and I think she gets her chance here. Ran in a 1600m maiden at Doomben just under three weeks ago where she worked home strongly from the back but couldn’t get the leader/winner Iconista. Interesting she comes back to 1400m, but has the runs on the board against the majority of these. Just the gate turns me off.
4 Red River Lad (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Symons/Laxon trained gelding that comes here off the back of a 1400m effort at Gatton where I’m not sure the tight track was to his liking but made ground late and wasn’t too bad in defeat I thought. Hasn’t really set the world on fire in five career runs to date, but last start was encouraging and like they back up straight away.
Race 2. (12:17) Patron Silver Hcp 1100m
The race has fallen away after scratchings and it sets up for 1 The Drinks Cart (Bet Now: $1.80) to continue his winning ways. Resumed for the Edmonds camp over 900m here and under a lovely ride from Fradd, he stuck towards the inside, got the run and the class kicked in. On breeding, should handle wet ground, and is drawn out, which is usually okay when this track has genuine give in it.
1100m is the query with 3 Maya Bay (Bet Now: $3.00) but the Sears camp are flying with their juveniles. Debuted over 1000m on the home track at Toowoomba where he showed good early toe to find the front and for all the straight, looked a beaten horse, but he just kept finding and on the line was too good. 1100m is the query at this level, but have to respect the stable.
11 Written Beauty (Bet Now: $5.50) is a key chance. Team Guy trains this filly, who is on debut. Has had two trials to get ready for start one, the first trial coming at Beaudesert before giving them a spanking over 1000m here in a trial and looked to go about her business very nicely. Tricky race this, but she looks to have ability.
Race 3. (12:52) The Great Northern (bm78) 2200m
4 Advance Warning (Bet Now: $3.30) looks one of the better gambles on the card. Tony Gollan trained son of Lucas Cranach who is gradually getting to peak fitness and should love the step up to 2200m. Ran over 2000m at Doomben last time out and was good late from the back when fourth to Dissolution. Looks ready to win, and a drop of rain that is forecast certainly won’t harm his chances.
Michael Costa has 2 Seentoomany (Bet Now: $2.90) going really well at the moment. Caught the eye over 1350m at Ipswich two back behind Marmaris before jumping to 1800m at the Gold Coast a couple of Fridays back where a lovely ride from Jag was a definite large factor as to why this horse got the job done in good style. Has that run under the belt and has to be respected despite the class/distance rise.
7 Speaking Bad (Bet Now: $7.50) is worth another chance. Was keen on her in the Dissolution race at Doomben but she just got too far back, tried to make a sustained run and was wide on the turn, so I’d be forgiving of that run, albeit she was only a couple of lengths away from the winner. Better suited here and can take this out.
Race 4. (13:27) The Mcwilliams Stolen Qlty Hcp 1400m
I like 2 Sabkhat (Bet Now: $7.50) back to 1400m for the O’Dea camp. Ran over the mile at Doomben a tick under three weeks ago where he looked to get a sweet run just off the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Sir Barnabus. Form out of that race looks a tad suspect, but he’s hard fit, racing well, and back to 1400m should be no issue.
The Edmonds camp has 4 Mr Bellagio (Bet Now: $2.50) flying. Big win from the back just under three weeks back at Doomben, sprouting wings late from the back to get up and nail Canapes near the line in a close photo finish. Gets really good weight relief this time around and overall, this isn’t the strongest open handicap going around.
3 In His Stride (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing really well at the moment for the Rex Lipp camp. Ran over this track/distance last time out where he was never really a winning threat given he was spotting them a start but was good late behind Freddie Fox Trot. Hopefully can use gate one to advantage and a wet track should be fine for him.
Race 5. (14:04) Canadian Club (bm80) 1400m
3 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $12.00) is working up to something positive I think. Been watching him closely at his past couple and he hasn’t been too bad in much stronger races than this, the latest coming over this track/distance back on May 8 when a close up fifth to No Doubt Acracker. Saves his best for the Gold Coast and with give in the track, something small each way on him here.
The less said about the ride from Fradd on 9 Great Keppell (Bet Now: $3.10) at this track/distance last time out, the better. It wasn’t a pretty much at all and think you could easily make a case that he should have gone close to winning with a half decent steer. He’s building up a picket of placings without winning. Just needs to breakthrough and finds a winnable race.
8 Tatcee (Bet Now: $4.40) is a daughter of Foxwedge for Chris Waller that resumes. Hasn’t raced since January 4 over 1800m here in The Wave when outclassed behind A Man To Match. Resumes with three trials under the belt, so fitness I doubt will be an issue for her and is a first up winner, so I’d be watching the market with her.
Race 6. (14:42) Two Suns Premium Stakes (bm75) 1200m
6 Ramtastic (Bet Now: $5.50) looks ready to win for Kelly Schweida. Little while between wins, but he’s racing so well without that picket next to the name. Ran over this track/distance last time out and closed off strongly from off the pace to run a narrow second to Potro Duro. Handles wet ground, so wet weather won’t dampen his chances. If anything, it enhances.
13 Take Tea (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Testa Rossa filly for Les Kelly that is first up. This three year old hasn’t raced since Feb 1 at Eagle Farm when close up over 1400m behind the very talented three year old Baroda. Looked to trial up really well here a couple of weeks ago and is a dynamite fresh horse, so I think watch betting and see what it does with her.
5 Le Dude (Bet Now: $21.00) is a horse who certainly likes wet ground and can cause problems here at a price. Hasn’t raced for just under two months since sitting wide no cover at Doomben and fading out of the finish behind Junction. Likes racing at the Gold Coast and his Heavy track stats are appealing. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (15:17) Xxxx Dry Hcp 900m
Think 4 Usmanov (Bet Now: $2.25) can get back into the winners list. He ran over this track/distance last time out when near the speed throughout and seemingly had his chance to get past Boom Chicka Boom but that horse was just too good on the day. Bit hard over this trip, but I think Usmanov is more effective when ridden to have last look. Hard to beat regardless.
1 Boom Chicka Boom (Bet Now: $3.60) is a good horse to back from a punting perspective because you know what you’ll get 99% of the time, and that is he’ll jump clean, roll forward and look to do it from both ends, which is what he did last time out at this track/distance when fending off the in form Usmanov. Hard to beat even though there is a query on how much pressure he’ll cop.
6 Hard Stride (Bet Now: $26.00) is a veteran for Jason Judge that resumes. He’s been a beauty right throughout his career but is rising ten years of age and safe to say his best days are behind him. In saying that, he has good wet track form and is a very strong first up performer. Gets a good run just off the speed and is one for multiples.
Race 8. (15:57) Absolut Soda And Lime Hcp 900m
Found this race near impossible. Think the soft gate and experience around this trip, 9 Better Thinking (Bet Now: $6.50) is the one I’m leaning to. Both runs this prep have come over 800m at Ipswich, beating the older horses first up before a close up second, beaten a lip. Gets a sweet run from the gate and stable/jock combo is flying.
4 Howwonderfullifeis (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Your Song filly for Tony Gollan that is first up. I think this is more her level compared to last prep where she ran in some good class races during the Summer Carnival where she was outclassed for the most part. This looks more her go I think and is a filly who does race well on the fresh side.
1 Devil’s Temptation (Bet Now: $7.00) is a definite chance back to 900m. Too good for them at this track/distance two back before stepping up to 1100m where she was a notable drifter in betting and ran accordingly when down the track behind Iced. Short course racing looks his go, so back to 900m I do like and stable is in form.
Race 9. (16:34) Gold Edition Qlty Hcp 1800m
9 Cellarmaid (Bet Now: $15.00) looks a good gamble here. Kelly Schweida trained filly that was a touch disappointing first up behind Shadow Of Time before racing over the mile at Doomben just under two weeks ago and the way the race was run, slowly, she was back and just had no chance. Did a good job to make up ground, and she’ll eat up 1800m here. Clearly the one to beat.
10 Miss Silky (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Team Sears trained filly that failed over the staying trip two back at Ipswich before going to 1800m at Toowoomba where she was given a 12/10 steer by Michael Cahill and the filly showed too much class for her rivals in the run to the line. Will need another peach from the gate, but that last start win was impressive.
12 Miss Cavallo (Bet Now: $23.00) is a knockout chance here at odds. Ran over this trip at Toowoomba last time out where she was back near last in the run and never really a winning threat, but liked the way she finished her race off when fourth to Miss Silky. She races best when ridden cold and is a filly who loves wet ground so she’ll hope for a rain affected track.
