Melbourne racing this Saturday continues at Flemington where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
The Straight Six 🏆: View the Field and Odds for The Straight Six
Race 1. (11:45) Blueant X5 Party Speaker-bm78 1400m
2 Snickerdoodledandy (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1400m and back to her own age/sex. First run for the Moody camp came over 1200m at Caulfield. Never really a winning threat given where she was in the run but loved her finale behind Ayrton in a very encouraging debut. If she bounces from that, I think she’s clearly the one to beat given the WA form around her reads so well.
9 Ethekwini (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive filly for Danny O’Brien that should love the mile on her home track. Last couple of runs have come at 1300m, the latest being a few weeks ago at Sandown when closing off strongly from the back, finishing second to surprise winner Electric Belle. On her home track, hard to beat I suggest.
Not sure what to make of 4 Electric Belle (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS). Completely unwanted in betting when resuming off a let up at Sandown a few weeks back. But credit to her, she produced a brilliant finale from the back to win and win with something in hand on the line. If she can improve off that, she’s in the mix again for sure with upside.
Race 2. (12:20) Tab Supp Nat Jockeys Trust Hcp 1600m
2 Holbein (Bet Now: $1.75 TOP ODDS) is a beauty for Steve Richards that broke a long run of outs when bolting up two weeks ago at Caulfield. It wasn’t the strongest field he beat up, but he was dominant from the front and broke a long, frustrating, run of outs. Hopefully he can go on with it now in what looks another winnable race.
10 Ocean Miss (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up after racing here last Saturday. Didn’t get the clearest of runs in the straight and clearly should have finished much closer behind Vegas Knight. Gets right down in the weights after the claim and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
7 Surreal Image (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) will be out of trouble on speed and giving his all. I didn’t think he was too bad in defeat in the Hawkesbury Cup. Just found the class of race a bit rich but he was far from disgraced behind Archedemus. He should lead these for fun and right down in the weights, I think he’ll only run well.
Race 3. (12:55) Racing.com Plate 1400m
5 Bring The Stars (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) could be the Taj Rossi Final horse or the horse that will win the 1800m 2YO race to get ballot exemption for the Derby. He is just screaming out of a horse wanting further, so remaining at 1400m is the query, but he looks above average and he was very good from the back at Bendigo last time. Hard to beat.
2 Linas Legend (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1400m for the O’Brien camp. Debuted two weeks ago at Caulfield over 1200m. Just went a fraction keen in the run which I reckon took something away from his finale but that said, he was never beating impressive winner Generation. Better for the experience, up in trip, definite winning chance.
11 Spirit Of Gaylard (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) is a Mitch Freedman trained son of Puissance De Lune that is on debut. This colt jumped out last week at Bendigo and I didn’t think he moved too bad when running third. Stable has had good success with the progeny, he draws soft…one to watch from a market perspective.
Race 4. (13:30) Pfd Food Services (bm84) 2500m
2 Heart Of Puissance (Bet Now: $1.75 TOP ODDS) has the runs on the board to prove awfully hard to beat. He was fantastic in the Warrnambool Cup. Just got into a tricky spot and then got into a severe bumping battle. Eventually got out of that and worked to the line with real purpose to run second. If that hasn’t busted him, he’ll take beating.
3 Wyclif (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) comes here as a last start Stakes winner so he commands respect. The ride from Currie won the race for him when he won three weeks back in the Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville. He shoved Pike on favourite Silent Sovereign on the fence and dictated when and where that horse could move. Olly takes over now, and now he has found winning form, he could well go on with it.
7 Sign Seal Deliver (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) is a real one batter for Matt Cumani that tends to race best when on speed and he can control when to increase the speed. Yendall rode a peach race on him at the Bool. Admittedly, fence in run/on speed was gold for the Carnival, but still, he had to take advantage and did so.
Race 5. (14:10) Donate@njt.org.au (bm78) 1100m
The Freedman camp has 5 Deep Dive (Bet Now: $5.00) absolutely flying at the moment. Has won his past two, leading throughout two back at Pakenham before repeating the dose at Morphettville. Harder here, but is a horse in form and gets the important gear change of Jamie Kah first time.
2 Express Pass (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality animal for Nick Ryan that resumes. He was progressing through his grades nicely last prep, but was then thrown in the deep end at the backend of the prep, didn’t measure up and looked a tired horse. Better suited here, trialled well and has quality on some of these.
16 Modear (Bet Now: $9.00) is the benchmark version of Brooklyn Hustle. Gets back, flashes late and produces good late splits. But good late speed means zero if you haven’t got early speed and this mare just doesn’t have it. I think her best chance will be if this field is bunched, she’s within range and can produce her customary sharp finale and blouse them. If she’s too far back, she’ll do something similar to recent runs.
Race 6. (14:50) Ecycle Solutions Trophy Hcp 1100m
1100m at Flemington looks such a perfect set up for the Patrick Payne trained 7 All Of Brighton (Bet Now: $5.50). Has raced over sprint trips at Caulfield his past couple and has just got too far back, run off his legs, but found the line with real purpose. 1100m, bigger track, hard fit, he’ll take beating.
I’m a fan of 6 Thudson (Bet Now: $7.00) and I think, in a tricky race, he is a relatively safe option. Ran three weeks ago at Sandown where he was near the speed throughout and when Johnny Allen clicked him up, he looked the winner. Just couldn’t quite get there and had to settle for a narrow second to Valaquenta. Think that is strong form for this.
4 Harlem Blues (Bet Now: $27.00) deserves another chance. I liked him three weeks ago at Sandown and on face value, he was pretty plain I thought, but post race was found to have had a throat issue, so a clear excuse. Prior efforts suggested a Saturday win was near, so giving him another look.
Race 7. (15:30) Off The Track Community Hcp 2000m
Luke Oliver has stated for a few months that 1 Real Sensation (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Queensland Derby horse. If he is going to be a force in the Derby, he has to be winning here. Strong winner at Flemington on Anzac Day, then went to Caulfield in a sit/sprint and had zero luck. He’ll take a power of beating I’d suggest despite the wide gate.
3 Our Lone Star (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Sean Mott trained gelding that is going super at the moment. Impressive maiden winner two back at Wangaratta before going here on Anzac Day over 1700m. Kept safe in the betting and it was proven corre3t. He was strong to the line in winning over 1700m. Off that, the 2000m here should be fine.
9 French Moon (Bet Now: $10.00) is bred to appreciate further and he gets that here for the first time. He ran over 1700m here on Anzac Day when just off the speed throughout and battled on pretty well in defeat behind Our Lone Star. I think the rise to 2000m is a big tick and he commands respect.
Race 8. (16:10) Straight Six 1200m
Expecting a big run from 6 Pandemic (Bet Now: $3.00). I had him penned as a Goodwood horse for a few months but unfortunately he couldn’t get there. He let me down a few weeks back in the McKay but the race shape and tempo was clearly against him, with that form clearly franked in the Goodwood. He’ll do me here.
7 Streetcar Stranger (Bet Now: $4.80) is a talented animal for David Jolly that deserves a crack at Stakes grade. Lovely ride from Jamie Kah saw him win two weeks ago at Caulfield, saving ground nearer the inside before eventually getting clear air and finishing best to win. Confident he can measure up.
Is 3 Halvorsen (Bet Now: $11.00) back on track? Jury was out early on in the prep but there was merit in his last start second here to Sartorial Splendor. There is a theory that he was perhaps flattered given Andrew Mallyon was steering and he rides the horse better than anyone. Have to wait and see.
Race 9. (16:40) Victorian Jockeys Assoc.-bm84 1800m
Staying at 1800m is the knock with 12 Zachaz (Bet Now: $3.00) but he does look to be set for a really good prep. Resumed over 1800m at Caulfield where he got a mile back in the run but got the right track into the race, presented to win. Just reckon his condition gave way late. Might need one more and a rise in trip, but he does have a strong second up record.
4 Somerset Maugham (Bet Now: $10.00) can be an improver. Ran over 1700m at Sandown three weeks ago where I thought Johnny Allen lobbed him into a lovely spot near the speed and on the turn, looked the winner. Just didn’t have the change up speed to finish it off. Hard fit now, Olly steering, good record at the trip, he’s a leading chance.
16 Lunar Flare (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented mare for Grahame Begg that should be suited up in trip. Resumed over the mile at Caulfield. Bit one paced when the sprint went on, but picked up and was very good late when third to Ruby Skye. Taking on the boys, but does look hard to beat here.
