An important lead up, potentially, to the Melbourne Cup is the Geelong Cup (2400m) and that race highlights a bumper nine race card on Wednesday at Geelong. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Geelong Cup 🏆: View the Geelong Cup Field
Race 1. (12:30) Avalon Airport Handicap (78) 2400m
1 Prinz Hlodowig (Bet Now: $8.00) on top in the opener. Just hoping he doesn’t give away too much start. He’s done that at his past couple, firstly at Mornington behind Steel Prince before going to Bendigo and working home well late behind Not An Ambiturner. Smaller field, so hopefully he isn’t far away in the run.
6 Truly High (Bet Now: $2.60) probably lacks the class/brilliance of some of these, but he’s racing well enough to be included. Ran over 2400m at Bendigo last time where he chased hard all the way and didn’t spit the dummy at all when second to Not An Ambiturner. That isn’t the strongest of form, but he’s hard fit and in the right stable.
2 Harvard (Bet Now: $11.00) is an interesting runner. Aaron Purcell trains this bloke, who hasn’t raced in over a month since contesting a hurdle race at Casterton where he just found the race shape not to his liking behind Ascot Red. Ran well at Sandown behind Truly High a couple of runs prior and off that, he’s a chance here.
Race 2. (13:00) Jack Rabbit Vineyard Handicap (64) 1400m
15 Ocean Essence (Bet Now: $11.00) is a lightly raced colt for Darren Weir who broke the maiden status impressively two back at Mildura before racing at Donald on an absoloute bog where he was far from disgraced against the older horses when third to Havastar. Better suited on firmer footing. Hopefully that last start hasn’t busted him.
7 Diamond Diva (Bet Now: $6.00) is a daughter of Reward For Effort for Darren Weir who deserves a crack at this kind of race off the back of a strong on speed win at Ballarat last time where she was somewhat ridden upside down but still proved too good. Runner up So You Dream won on Saturday so the form reads well.
8 Sunquest (Bet Now: $13.00) had the tag as the biggest bludger in Australian racing but he finally got the maiden win out of the way last start at Kilmore, aided by a lovely steer from Mitch Aitken, who had the horse parked in a beaut spot just off the pace and finished best to win narrowly. Can he go on with it?
Race 3. (13:35) No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (70) 1700m
Happy to be with 5 Ruomaza (Bet Now: $4.80). I thought it was a ripping ride from Harry Coffey that got the horse home last time over the mile at Morphettville, saving every inch of ground and driving through along the rail to win. I think he’ll get 2000m+, so 1700m a little query as in does he want further, but he’s got the ability.
16 Tigeen (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Matt Cumani trained mare who I reckon is going well enough to measure up here. Sat three deep with cover last time at Bendigo in what looked a strongly run affair and despite being under hard riding before the turn, she kept surging under Jamie Mott to get the win. 1700m no issue and should have upside.
15 Aberro (Bet Now: $7.00) should just about be ready to show his best third up from a break. Thought he was most disappointing first up at Flemington before going back to Mornington over 1500m where he was much better when a close up third to French Girl. Third up at 1700m, he should be ready to show his best.
Race 4. (14:10) Melbourne Cup Country Carnival Series Heat 6 (78) 1500m
2 Gold Fields (Bet Now: $11.00) should be on speed and giving a stack of cheek. Attempted to lead all the way over the 1550m on the Parks track in Adelaide last time and he gave a decent enough kick when asked for the big effort but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Adatto. Senior jock back on and should get a good run on the pace.
6 Tezlah (Bet Now: $4.00) is the best horse in the race and can easily win this but gee he’s hard to trust. Ran over the mile at Hamilton last time out and to the eye, he was disappointing but the race looked to have depth to it and the winner Stealthy Lucas looks well above average. Should get three wide cover and get his chance.
5 Rewarding Effort (Bet Now: $6.50) is a threat but this race has really fallen away after looking a beauty off the noms. This bloke had his first run since December down the straight at Flemington and I thought his effort was quite good behind Haunted. Better suited at this trip and on a bending track. Gate one a big tick also.
Race 5. (14:45) Dual Choice Plate (84) 1200m
3 Choisborder (Bet Now: $3.60) on top. Darren Weir has this bloke flying at the moment. You could make a strong case he should have won last time at the Valley but just had no luck at the top of the straight when wanting to build momentum, beaten narrowly by Moonlover. Bigger track, fitter and is a real 1200m specialist.
I like 8 Satori (Bet Now: $4.20) back to 1200m and back to Geelong. Ran over this trip on Benalla Cup Day last time where he did work in the run and never really looked likely but was game in defeat behind Sheriff John Stone. Would love to see this horse roll along on speed because that’s his best chance of winning.
Huge watch on 9 Qiji Phoenix (Bet Now: $7.50), who resumes for Toby Edmonds. On his two year old form when trained by Te Akau Racing, he’d bolt up here. Just all depends how he’s done with Toby and how he’s settled into Melbourne. Had one run for the stable in the Winter and was just fair I thought behind Apoloboom, but the two trials leading in have been quite good.
Race 6. (15:20) Geelong Classic 2200m
5 Ligulate (Bet Now: $12.00) doesn’t have the A1 form compared to most of these, but he’s got the upside and is in the right stable. Ran over 1870m at Newcastle last Tuesday where he got back off the pace but worked home strongly when third to Semper Fidelis. Good draw, Bowman on and up in trip looks a big tick.
2 Just Rolling (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Tony McEvoy trained galloper who does bring some decent enough form against the older horses for this. Ran over 2040m at the Valley last time out and worked home with purpose from the back, just missing out on picking up Miss Coolangatta. The 2200m should be fine and Currie rides it over stablemate.
Drawing wide with clear air should really suit 1 Farooq (Bet Now: $14.00). He comes through the UCI at Flemington where he was midfield and didn’t really come on in the race won by Extra Brut. He’s a big, big boy so the rise to 2200m and drawing out will really help his cause and he’s certainly good enough to win.
Race 7. (16:00) Geelong Cup 2400m
3 Withhold (Bet Now: $2.80) is the huge watch from a Melbourne Cup perspective. He hasn’t raced since bolting up in the Northumberland on the Newcastle Synthetic in the UK, beating A Prince Of Arran. Meets that horse 3kg worse off here which isn’t really much but has to be respected. This horse does look a two miler. Hopefully the speed is on for him.
9 Yogi (Bet Now: $6.00) is bursting to win a race. He’s flying for Darren Weir but just has this awful racing pattern of getting back. He did that last time in the Bart Cummings but worked home well enough behind Avilius. He was 1800-2500 that time so he has that run under the belt now and should be better off.
4 Wall Of Fire (Bet Now: $26.00) looks silly odds. The Maher/Eustace team is flying and this bloke looks set up to run really well third up. He ran in the St Leger at Randwick last time and was very good off a moderate tempo when fourth to stablemate Big Blue. He’ll be much better suited on firmer footing and I think he’s clear overs.
Race 8. (16:40) Shojun Concrete Stakes 1200m
Looks a lovely race for the Mick Price trained 11 Teleplay (Bet Now: $6.00). Jumped out well prior to resuming in a field of seven at Ballarat where she looked in a sticky spot early on but once she got clear air, it was game over and she won with class/authority. Up to 1200m looks beneficial as should the more genuine tempo.
I reckon 1 Cool Passion (Bet Now: $5.00) is racing well. Just needed the run fresh behind Grey Shadow before going to the Northwood Plume where she didn’t have much luck in the straight behind Winter Bride, getting held up with not much clear air nearer the inside. Prefer her at 1400m, but she’s got the class/quality to win.
4 Split Lip (Bet Now: $9.00) has had a couple of runs now for Darren Weir and I think she’s building up to something positive. Has just got too far back in both runs for the stable but has produced very good late splits each time. Hopefully she doesn’t flop out the back again and can take up a decent spot, which she was able to do when trained by Will Clarken.
Race 9. (17:20) IGA Liquor Handicap (70) 1200m
4 Prevailing Winds (Bet Now: $3.60) for me in the get out. Darren Weir trains this fur year old, who was an alarming drifter in betting when resuming at Hamilton but despite the market drift, he ran a beauty and got very close to knocking off Captain’s Son. 2/2 second up and gate one, happy to be with him on the up.
5 I Did It Again (Bet Now: $3.80) isn’t far off a win and he gets a chance here. He ran over 1400m on Cranbourne Cup Day where he was held up early and a bit unlucky not to finish closer when third to Tamasa but in the end he was held. I reckon that trip sees him right so I like him back to 1200m and he can bounce back for sure.
2 Reilmartini (Bet Now: $10.00) is an interesting runner. Formerly with Darren Weir but resumes with Kevin Evans. Showed good promise when with Weir, as highlighted when winning at Caulfield. Now with Evans, I thought he trialled up really well at Tatura and at his best, he can certainly win this. Market will be the guide.
