Nine races have been set down for Caulfield on Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Anniversary Vase 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Anniversary Vase
Race 1. (12:15) Wilde Racing Hcp 1100m
This race has been severely damaged via scratchings and likely to have a field of four/five go around, so looking for the horse with the turn of foot and 3 Gimmie Par (Bet Now: $1.60 TOP ODDS) is that horse. Was originally against her given she might get too far back in a fast run race, but they won’t go quick here, so she won’t be far away and off her super debut effort, I think she now becomes the one to beat, clearly.
4 Anatolia (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained filly that looks to have her share of talent. Notable drifter in betting on debut at Bendigo but she looked to be going sweetly under Olly and when he asked her to go, she did, and was strong to the line in winning. I think she has to be rated highly in a race like this.
1 Vandoula Lass (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is nothing special but will put herself on speed and try hard. Resumed in the Kindergarten when attempting to lead throughout but she found very little when asked and dropped out behind Paulele. Better suited at this level, should lead and give a decent sight.
Race 2. (12:50) Ern Jensen Funerals (bm78) 1600m
Pretty keen on 3 Brookspire (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) for Chris Waller. Not sure what he has in mind for this filly, but I think blacktype is on the cards. I was keen on that blacktype coming in the Kembla Grange Classic last time out but just got too far back when a closing fourth to Miravalle. She has the form to beat these.
1 Pride Of Jenni (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) had her first run for Symon Wilde three weeks back over 1400m here and I thought she was good from the front. Beau Mertens rode a good race on speed and she almost pinched it. Her first run since Cup Week, her condition just gave out late. She’ll come on from that and will prove hard to run down.
Fitter and up to the mile should suit 10 Yatton (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS), who got the maiden kill out of the way fresh at Sale. She didn’t exactly smash the clock when winning, but over 1400m, she got better as the race went on, which is a good sign for a filly with Oaks aspirations. Keen to see how she goes here.
Race 3. (13:25) Next Payments (bm70) 1800m
19 Flickitova (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) on top for me. Former Kiwi that has done little wrong in two Australian runs for the Maher/Eustace camp, both coming at Pakenham. Loved the way he attacked the line to win fresh over 1400m. Then had a few weeks off, ran over the mile and was held up at a vital stage, which probably cost him in the end when third to Upswing. Fitter now and up to 1800m, in the right camp, he’s got so much upside to come.
11 Mr Mooj (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is the fascinating runner. Now with Robert Hickmott after formerly racing in Ireland. His last run came at Leopardstown when down the track behind Tiger Moth, who of course came so close to winning the Melbourne Cup last year. Could easily blow this field away, so watch the market.
1 Zachaz (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a talented animal for the Maher/Eustace camp that resumes. This is first up, having not raced since January 16 when down the track over 2000m at Rosehill behind the then in form Harpo Marx. Two of his five career wins have come fresh and he does get in quite well after the claim.
Race 4. (14:00) L. U. Simon Builders (bm78) 1100m
9 Plaquette (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) can be dangerous in a race like this. Market didn’t want a bar of her when resuming at Warwick Farm and while it was right, she did run well in defeat I thought. Think the form out of that race will stand up over time and she is a mare who has run well in Melbourne previously.
3 Intrepidacious (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) is a John O’Shea trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast when a close up second to a pretty solid performer in Stolen Jade. Two trials leading in have been sharp but she has always been like that. Lands on speed and will give a decent sight.
16 Standoff (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is a handy filly who will appreciate a fast speed here. She resumes after a solid Spring/Summer prep, where she did contest blacktype behind September Run, so the form around does read well, and with a stack of speed engaged here, I can see her charging late.
Race 5. (14:35) The Di Beretta Hcp 1200m
I’m really keen to see 10 Tydeus (Bet Now: $5.00) resume. Lindsey Smith trained three year old that created a good impression in the Spring when he won his opening two career outings. Threw him in the deep end in the Danehill and on face value didn’t measure up, but did pull up lame. Loved his work in a recent Camperdown jumpout and we know the stable generally have them ready to go fresh.
8 Winsum (Bet Now: $3.60) is a talented animal for the Keys team that should prove hard to beat against these. Smashed the clock when winning fresh at Cranbourne before racing here three weeks ago. Didn’t exactly get the clearest of paths to let down but still thought he had his chance when third to Minhaaj. That form reads well enough for a race like this.
6 All Of Brighton (Bet Now: $3.90) should be suited up in trip with the run under the belt. Resumed three weeks back here and surged hard from off the speed, just missing out on the win when beaten a lip by Minhaaj. That was his first run since breaking the maiden down the straight at Flemington on Rapid Racing Day so he’s a leading chance.
Race 6. (15:15) Stow Storage Solutions (bm84) 1200m
12 Superium (Bet Now: $4.80) is a hard horse to catch but he has the talent under the hood to give this a shake. First run for the Hawkes camp came two weeks back over 1100m here and he should have won. Just no luck at a vital stage in the straight and couldn’t get a chance to build the revs. Clear air this time around, he can win.
1 Alfa Oro (Bet Now: $3.00) can be quite dangerous here. Resumed in the Sword Of Mercy race from three weeks back here. Market wanted to take a set against him given he was fresh in what was going to be a brutally run affair. He ran well without winning, finishing third. He’ll come on from that and is hard to beat.
7 Designer Chef (Bet Now: $8.00) is a beauty for Mark Webb that is just so honest. How he didn’t get the photo to go his way two weeks ago I do not know. In real time it looked like he won, in the slow mo replay, he looked like he won, but the photo went the way of Magna Bella. Harder here, but he’ll give his all.
Race 7. (15:55) Manhari Metals Hcp 2000m
Bless 2 Inverloch (Bet Now: $9.00) and bless Froggy. Ride of the meeting from Frog to win here two weeks ago aboard this guy. Led throughout and what made the ride so good was his timing. Controlled throughout, then from the 800m, he pushed the button and we know that when this horse gets control in front, he’s a tough animal to get past. Hoping that is the case once again.
12 Killourney (Bet Now: $5.00) could be a sneaky Warrnambool Cup contender, but with his low rating, I dare say will need to win this to safely secure a start in that kind of race. Loved the way he closed off last start at Sandown behind Legend Of Zorro after getting well back off a slow speed. If he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be really dangerous.
1 Brimham Rocks (Bet Now: $7.50) is in for a good prep. He resumed over the mile here two weeks back and chased strongly from off the speed in wearing down Inverloch but that horse had it too good in front and was too good. Fitter and up in trip, he clearly appeals as a winning chance at this level.
Race 8. (16:30) Anniversary Vase 1400m
7 Riddle Me That (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for Andrew Noblet and is deserving of a decent race win. With luck, probably should have come last start in the Victoria Handicap but he had no luck at all at a vital stage, finishing a fast finishing close up fourth. If the breaks go his way, he definitely can take this out.
5 Missile Mantra (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented mare for Team Snowden that looks to be in for a good prep. Sat last in the small field when resuming here two weeks ago but she was trucking and once she got to the outside, it was race over and she was dominant. You’d like to think there is improvement to come and she can build off that.
4 Reykjavik (Bet Now: $9.50) is on the seven day back up for Lindsey Smith after resuming last Saturday in the Bel Esprit over 1100m. He got back off the speed and chased strongly late in a good effort when fourth to Sisstar. Jumping straight to 1400m in a week is a query, but in the right stable and gets Olly steering.
Race 9. (17:05) Dexion Victoria (bm84) 1600m
11 Legend Of Zorro (Bet Now: $3.00) is an Andrew Noblet trained four year old that is flying at the moment, winning three on the bounce. Lovely front running steer from Will Price saw him bolt up over the mile at Sandown last start, controlling the race from the outset and giving nothing else a look in. Harder here, but lands on speed and will run a bold race.
7 Cadre Du Noir (Bet Now: $6.50) is a handy animal for the Maher/Eustace camp that resumes. He returns to racing as a gelding after a mixed Winter prep where he looked very sharp early on but when he got to Rosehill, he didn’t fire and was spelled soon after. Gelded, has trialled well, definite market watch.
5 Blinder (Bet Now: $16.00) is three weeks between runs for the Busuttin/Young stable since resuming with a strong win over 1400m here. Admittedly, the race didn’t rate through the roof, but he was first up with improvement to come and he dug in when required, which I like. Does no work from the draw and is a knockout hope.
