A bumper ten race card has been set down for Rosehill this Saturday where it is Winter Challenge Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1400m=Winning Post; Out five metres for the remainder.
Winter Challenge 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Winter Challenge
Race 1. (11:15) Elite Sand & Soil Hcp 1200m
7 Silent Impact (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) could well be one of the better bred youngsters going around. Interesting that he is a gelding given the breeding being by Maurice out of Hollow Bullet, a Group l winner. That decision looks to have been the right one because his debut resulted in quite a strong win at Goulburn, where he was dominant from the front and ran time. Confident he can measure up.
12 Sir Crackle (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another look. He would be a good thing in a provincial maiden because he has been trialling too well to dismiss off one run, that debut being in the Sky Command race mentioned above where he was plain. Gate one, he deserves another chance.
Very wary of 4 Coastwatch (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS), who returns as a gelding for Chris Waller and no surprise that J Mac is riding because he has always had a good opinion of this horse. Perhaps the gelding operation could be the making of him. His trials leading in have been strong so watch the market and see what it does.
Race 2. (11:50) Tab Highway Plate (c3) 1500m
16 Nuremburg Castle (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) has got more upside than most and up to 1500m third up, he appeals big time. Big win fresh at Moruya before racing there again over 1400m. He got a mile back in the run but loved the way he finished his race off when a close up fifth. He can sit much closer in the run and I think the rise in trip is a big tick.
2 Dream Runner (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) should prove hard to beat for Keith Dryden. He was the subject of strong support when racing in a 1400m Highway at Randwick two weeks ago. He got into a tricky spot nearer the inside but hit the line pretty well when fourth. He’ll love the rise to 1500m and firmer footing helps the cause.
5 Choccy Gaf (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) is a Joe Cleary trained galloper that finds Bowman to steer. Comes to town off the back of what looked a pretty strong win on testing ground at Gundagai. Lobbed into a lovely spot before peeling into clear air and he was impressive late in putting them away. Hard to beat with luck from the gate.
Race 3. (12:25) Bowermans Furniture (bm72) 1500m
5 Black Bolt (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) on top in what looks a competitive race for the three year olds. Notable betting drifter when resuming at Hawkesbury and while the market got it right, I liked the way he finished his race off from off the speed, producing some of the better late splits of the meeting. Fitter, up in trip with a significant jockey upgrade, he can take this out.
3 Go Troppo (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) can continue his winning ways. Matty Dunn trained three year old that was somewhat unwanted in betting when racing at Randwick two weeks ago but I loved the way he picked up late in a driving finish, getting up to win. Handles all conditions and only has to hold his form to go close.
4 Bazooka (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a David Payne trained three year old who doesn’t win out of turn but is an honest customer that is rarely far away from the the action. Ran two weeks ago in the Midway at Randwick and was solid late without threatening behind impressive winner Zorocat. Back on his home track, he can be be around the mark.
Race 4. (13:00) July Sprnt 1100m
Big fan of 5 All Time Legend (Bet Now: $1.90 TOP ODDS) and despite 1100m being short of his best, he has class and I reckon it will carry him a long way. Put together such a good Summer prep, winning a couple of races impressively before ending the campaign with a gutsy third to Shared Ambition. Thought his recent trial was a nice piece of work and is 2/3 fresh.
If 1 Trumbull (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is anywhere near right re fitness, he is the likely winner given he is a multiple Stakes winner. Resumes for Kim Waugh, having not raced since the Liverpool Cup when down the track and a tired horse behind subsequent Group l winner Think It Over. Has looked sharp at the trials and is a bomb when produced fresh.
Huge watch on 7 Barbaric (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). If he’s fit, he will run well. He could well be a potential Spring Carnival horse, whereas some of these are off season class. Last run came in the Wyong Magic Millions when pulling up 2/5 lame behind Eleven Eleven. Trials leading in have been great and down in the weights, I’m keen to see how he goes.
Race 5. (13:35) Schweppes (bm78) 2400m
1 Harpo Marx (Bet Now: $2.25) is flying this time in for Bjorn Baker and he can win again. Looked a good thing on paper according to most when racing at Randwick over 2000m a couple of weeks ago and despite a few nervous moments, his class came to the fore and he was much too good. Proven 2400m performer, he’ll take beating against this lot.
2 No Compromise (Bet Now: $5.00) looks hard to beat. Chris Waller trained former Kiwi that has done little wrong since coming to Australia. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago and I thought he threw the race away when wanting to lay in under pressure when second to Spencer. If he does everything right, he can win.
6 Montabot (Bet Now: $7.00) is a working progress for Matty Smith. Just looked in need of the run fresh behind Oscar Zulu. Then went to Randwick and ran a much improved race when third to Harpo Marx at big odds. 2400m+ is when he came into his own when racing in France and he gets to that trip here.
Race 6. (14:10) City Tattersalls Club (bm78) 1200m
2 Misteed (Bet Now: $8.00) looks like she is enjoying life with Kim Waugh. Trialled up well for the camp prior to having start one for the stable at Randwick two weeks ago where she had a suck run behind the speed and loomed to win. Just failed to get there when nabbed late by Van Giz. Better for the run, she’ll take beating up in trip.
Titter and up in trip I do like for 5 Dame Kiri (Bet Now: $13.00). Resumed over 1100m at Randwick a fortnight back where she paraded like she would need the run and that is how it panned out behind Van Giz, but was far from disgraced. Good second up record and firmer footing helps her cause.
1 Maddi Rocks (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality mare that resumes for John O’Shea after formerly being with Chris Waller. This girl has always had good talent, borderline Stakes class. She is better than 78 so it is all about where she is at re fitness levels. Good fresh record and has trialled well leading in.
Race 7. (14:45) Xxxx Winter Challenge 1500m
9 Cisco Bay (Bet Now: $6.50) has done little wrong this time in. Resumed with an electric win at Randwick from off the speed. Then went to Rosehill three weeks ago and just lost sight of the bunny in an ordinary race shape for him when third to Oscar Zulu. Hard to beat if he can sit closer in the run.
3 Order Again (Bet Now: $7.00) is bursting to win a race. He is a hard horse to catch but he is racing really well despite not greeting the judge first. He tried hard in the Winter Stakes two weeks ago but was clearly no match for Bandersnatch, a very much in form galloper who has Spring aspirations. His wet track stats are good, but IMO, he’s better on top of the ground so a firmer deck is a tick.
4 Ziegfeld (Bet Now: $5.50) has got more upside than most here. James Cummings trained four year old that resumed in the Winter Stakes, a tough ask given how wet the track was, but I didn’t think he disgraced himself at all when fourth to Bandersnatch. Loomed but condition gave out. He’ll come on from that and has a touch of class.
Race 8. (15:25) Midway (bm72) 1500m
1 Ashim (Bet Now: $3.10) has done little wrong in two Australian runs for Matty Smith. French import that was good in defeat in the Midway behind Zorocat last time out. Loomed to be a winning threat, but that filly is flying and was dominant in the run to the line. Up to 1500m is a big tick and has got more upside than most.
12 Arctic Thunder (Bet Now: $3.90) is a talented filly for Gary Portelli that brings solid metro form into this race. On paper, the run at Canterbury last time was just fair, but given the on speed/rail bias, I thought she did a really good job to get as close as she did. Track should play more fair this time around and gets a significant jockey upgrade.
15 Salsonic (Bet Now: $18.00) has the talent to threaten in a race like this. Jason Coyle trained gelding that was pretty plain at Warwick Farm two back but was wide no cover and just didn’t like the wet track. Freshened up, trialled okay and was better on the Kenso track. One for exotics, provided the track isn’t too rain affected.
Race 9. (16:05) The Agency Real Estate (bm78) 1200m
6 Smart Image (Bet Now: $5.00) is bursting to win another race and he gets his chance here provided the track isn’t too wet. Ran over 1200m here several weeks ago when back near last in the run but was given a peach steer by Latham, just missing out on picking up Shadow Crush. If the track isn’t too wet, I think he’s one of the hardest to beat.
4 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $2.50) is heading in the right direction for Chris Waller and is a key threat here. Tough all the way win here three weeks back. He was there to be run down but found when required and was too good. How strong that race was? Not sure, but he’s a hard fit/in form animal.
1 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $6.00) is bursting to win a race for Richard Litt. Good late fresh behind Malkovich before racing at Randwick again where he tried hard to wear down Perigord but that horse had it too good in front with the bias and was a strong winner. This guy is third up now, hard fit and I do think up to 1200m is a big tick.
Race 10. (16:45) Quayclean (bm88) 1300m
3 Frosty Rocks (Bet Now: $2.15) is a Bjorn Baker trained galloper that resumes. Was down to resume two weeks ago at Randwick but the races were called off by the time his race came around. Hasn’t raced since Jan 30 at this track when leading and sticking on well when third to Brutality. His trials leading in have been great and has a strong fresh record.
6 Ventura Ocean (Bet Now: $8.00) is a very interesting runner. Former UK galloper that was 2/2 to start his Australian career for Kris Lees, both wins coming in Brisbane, and each time he looked smart. Is he a potential Spring Carnival candidate? Given the depth engaged here, I think we will get a guide as to where he sits, but I think he’ll measure up.
Fascinating runner is 2 Blue Soldier (Bet Now: $34.00), who makes his Australian debut for Annabel Neasham. Former Irish galloper that brings with him some strong form lines and has been prepped up nicely for start one. Had a prep without a run in the Autumn. Spelled and has had two trials to get ready. Just want to see what the market does.
