Stand alone racing in Victoria returns this Saturday, with a bumper ten race card assembled at Ballarat for Ballarat Cup Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres from the 600m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:25) Sam Miranda Handicap (78) 1200m
5 Soho Ruby (Bet Now: $6.00) is another handy mare resuming in this race, this one for Levi Kavanagh. She hasn’t raced since the Rivette Final at Flemington over the mile where she probably raced like a tired horse and was looking for the paddock behind Spanish Reef. Like what I have seen at the jump outs and she can sprint well fresh.
4 Royal Fashion (Bet Now: $3.40) is a definite watch for me here. Former kiwi mare making her Australian debut for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Her NZ form, I’d say it’s similar to off season midweek form, so I wouldn’t want to take anything too short with her, but I did like what I saw in a recent Benalla trial win. Looks ready to go.
1 Single Note (Bet Now: $14.00) is a talented mare that resumes for Robbie Griffiths. This girl hasn’t raced since Anzac Day at Flemington over the mile when perhaps running out of puff and looking for the paddock behind Typhoon Monaco. Has run well at Ballarat before and I haven’t minded the way she has looked in a couple of jump outs.
Race 2. (12:55) Isuzu Ballarat Handicap (70) 1100m
11 Beyond The Dream (Bet Now: $9.50) is a horse who has really turned the corner in recent times. Gave them an absolute caning in winning the maiden over 1000m here before racing over 1100m on Kyneton Cup Day and she was even more dynamic again in winning. The key is definitely the booking of Yendall. She has really turned her form around since he hopped on.
10 Banachek (Bet Now: $12.00) is a quality four year old for the Weir team who resumed with a somewhat ordinary sixth at Kyneton before bouncing with a tough win near the speed at Kilmore. This gelding has always shown good promise right throughout his career and he does appear to come over from the gate and map well.
3 Fabulonh (Bet Now: $18.00) is the watch horse. Colin Scott trained gelding first up after a disappointing Winter prep where he promised a fair bit but didn’t deliver. Does generally perform quite well fresh and I like what I have seen from him at the trials. Look for him to get back and launch late off a hot speed.
Race 3. (13:30) No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (78) 2300m
10 Etah James (Bet Now: $7.50) is a progressive mare for the Matt Cumani team who should take some beating here. She had the race safely in her keeping throughout last time at Geelong and though the margin was a half length, she was always in control of the result. Harder here, but has enormous upside and distance is no issue.
11 Cedar Grande (Bet Now: $6.00) looks ready to do something here. Has raced out of her grade somewhat throughout the Spring but has run well without winning. Okay effort last time in the Matriarch behind Savapinski and this is clearly a much easier assignment. If she brings her best, I think she goes quite close.
Convinced that 2 Ormito (Bet Now: $10.00) is going really well at the moment. Just hasn’t had things go his way. Held up and unlucky I thought not to finish closer in the Horsham Cup before going to the Ararat Cup where he had no hope the way the race was run yet did a good job to close off. Finds a very winnable race and gets the claim.
Race 4. (14:05) Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic 1000m
10 Our Toninicconi (Bet Now: $4.20) comes through the same jump out mentioned above and I thought she was a real eye catcher. Tony McEvoy filly who got out the back in the trial before peeling wide and under riding she powered home, and was clearly in front past the line. Great sign for a two year old when they’re pushed, there is a response.
5 Anthemoessa (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Matt Cumani trained daughter of Smart Missile who has been one of the standouts in the recent clockwise jump outs here. The latest came here last Monday where she was going easily behind the speed before appearing to nearly fall. Picked up and was strong to the line and through it. Definitely can measure up.
7 Farthing Wood (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Darren Weir trained youngster who debuted down the Flemington straight on Cup Day where he got back and never really looked likely but he found the line okay late behind Setsuna. He does have the race experience on his side, he’s trained on the track and he draws an inside gate.
Race 5. (14:40) Hertz Ballarat VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade 1400m
2 Pique (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Darren Weir trained three year old who was a real eye catcher last time out under the lights at Moonee Valley when making up good ground from the back to run a close up third to Tezlah in a race which looked to have far more depth than what he faces here. Just has to hold his form to go close.
5 Cutlass (Bet Now: $34.00) is a progressive gelding for Mick Price who should be respected here. Ordinary debut behind Banter before the blinkers went on at Benalla and he was a different horse, leading all the way and bolting up, landing some good bets. Clearly harder here, but one start in the blinkers and he tore them a new one. Can’t ignore.
7 Fulton Street (Bet Now: $16.00) is probably the best horse in the race but he does plenty wrong. It was a strange move to take the blinkers off last week at Bendigo over the mile and it clearly backfired as he pulled hard, wandered about, did plenty wrong yet was still sound. If he brings his best and puts it all together, he’ll go close.
Race 6. (15:20) Suez McKellar Mile (70) 1600m
10 Bonus D’Oro (Bet Now: $6.00) on top. Darren Weir trained mare who ran at Bendigo last Tuesday over 1400m and you had to like the way she closed her race off late in the piece when third to Sword Of Justice in a race which had far more depth than what she faces here. Should only be helped by the rise to the mile, and on her home track.
7 Casta (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented gelding for the Tony McEvoy stable who was well backed when resuming over this track/distance on November 6 and after sitting on speed, he gave a really good kick but was no match for Siga La Vaca. The third horse bolted up last week at Morphettville so the form has held up and this horse has upside.
13 Mount Panorama (Bet Now: $9.00) is two weeks between runs for the Gary Moore team since racing over 1400m at Newcastle where he sat back in the small field and while he never looked likely due to the tempo, he closed off nicely late behind the talented Magicalease. Reckon the mile will suit and his overall form does read quite well.
Race 7. (16:00) Maxitrans Handicap (84) 1400m
Back Me: I think with his best form, 10 New Universe (Bet Now: $5.50) beats these. I am happy to overlook the run on Cup Day. I think McEvoy just got into a nasty spot in the run and when they sprinted in front, he was still held up between runners. The plus side is the form has been franked well and truly via Dollar for Dollar. Happy to give him another look.
15 Rewarding Effort (Bet Now: $16.00) is the watch horse. Quality animal for the Cindy Alderson team who resumed over 1000m on Sale Cup Day and just found that trip too sharp when finishing behind the above average Seven Year Reward, who ran well last Friday night at the Valley. Trial win since was sharp and up to 1400m is a big tick.
11 Orient Line (Bet Now: $21.00) is a talented galloper for the John Moloney team who could be a knockout chance at odds. Ran over 1500m at Moonee Valley on Manikato Night where he sat off the speed but they sprinted too sharply for him and he finished down the track behind Black Sheep. Runs well on the big tracks and his two runs prior saw him produce good late splits.
Race 8. (16:40) Sportsbet Ballarat Cup 2200m
7 Mr Garcia (Bet Now: $3.60 ODDS BOOST) looks a great bet here. Former Andreas Wohler galloper now with Darren Weir after making his Australian debut on Oaks Day over 1800m where he was given such a sweet steer by McEvoy, who cuddled the gelding behind the speed before angling clear and chasing hard off a slow tempo to score a sharp win. He’ll eat up the extra trip here and can only improve off that.
5 Grey Lion (Bet Now: $4.60 ODDS BOOST) is racing really well at the moment for the Matt Cumani team…problem is he doesn’t win. Thought he had the race won a fortnight back in the Queen Elizabeth, but Vengeur Masque just packed too many punches. I think that hard run should toughen him right up for this and stable is low flying at the moment.
1 Antonio Giuseppe (Bet Now: $8.00 ODDS BOOST) has to go in the numbers on class alone. He hasn’t raced since the Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day where they went warp speed and he was pretty much run off his legs behind Lucky Hussler. Quickly up to the 2200m is the slight query, but he is a Group l performer, so class will carry him a long way.
Race 9. (17:20) Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Classic 1100m
The Baster/Waterbott team to do it again for me, this time in the shape of 11 Debonairly (Bet Now: $3.70). I think just forgive/forget her resumption down the straight on Oaks Day. Not sure she was entirely happy in that scenario. That fresh run followed some outstanding trial efforts, so if you can forgive her for that, she’s the one.
5 Modern Wonder (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented mare for the Corstens team who last raced on November 3 under the lights at Moonee Valley where she was given such a sweet ride on speed by Ben Thompson, kicked hard on the bend and held a comfortable margin to win. I think back to 1100m is perfect, she maps super, hard fit and in form.
2 Senor Gaudi (Bet Now: $11.00) isn’t really well suited at the weights, but gee he looks an above average type for the Kennewell yard. Didn’t appear to beat much last time out at Gawler, but he showed an electric turn of foot when asked for the big effort and ran really good time relative to the day. Confident he can measure up and run well.
Race 10. (17:55) City Of Ballarat Tonks Plate 1200m
13 Falcool (Bet Now: $7.50) is an above average four year old for the Aaron Purcell team who resumed on Hamilton Cup Day over 1100m where he looked a good thing on paper and ran accordingly, aided by such a sweet ride from Meech, who was mindful that the horse was fresh against some handy hard fit sprinters. Cuddled and waited to pounce until when required. Has strong 3YO form in the Autumn that should see him acquit himself nicely.
12 Oberland (Bet Now: $5.00) was pretty good two back at Caulfield behind Rich Charm on Blue Sapphire Day before going to the straight on Cup Day and he was again an eye catcher when finishing midfield behind Ocean Embers. Hard fit and back around a bend in a fast run 1200m looks an ideal recipe for him to run well.
10 Got The Goss (Bet Now: $11.00) is a very talented galloper who has had a few runs now for the Weir camp and has been strong. The key to him is firm tracks, and that is what he got on Kyneton Cup Day in the feature sprint race where he rounded them up from the back and was impressive. No reason why he can’t repeat that effort.
