Anzac Day racing in Sydney heads to Randwick where eight races will be run and won. The weather is overcast, the track is good (3) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out seven metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:45) Light Horse Brigade Plate 1400m
Getting close to D-Day for 8 Stock Up (Bet Now: $3.00). Scott Singleton trains this filly, who has had four career outings and has shown good promise each time she has stepped out, behind some quality types, but is yet to win and I think she has to put this field away. Really good run last week on the Kensington track, hard fit and up to 1400m, she should go close.
3 Stone (Bet Now: $3.90) is a James Cummings trained gelding who has had two runs back from a break, finishing runner up both times. Notable drifter in betting last time out at Wyong and the punters got it right as he didn’t attack the line at all when second. Third up at 1400m, this is nearly D-Day for him too.
4 Stryke Rock (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who looks to be knocking on the door of a maiden win. Ran in a maiden at the Rosehill midweeks where he was given every chance by McEvoy but just found Red Rover too good. Think he’s looking for further and he gets it immediately. Definite chance.
Race 2. (13:20) Armistice Plate 1200m
Looks a lovely race for 7 Pembroke Castle (Bet Now: $3.80), a nice looking youngster that resumes for the Chris Waller team. Showed really good promise in two runs to kick off his career in the Summer, placing in the Inglis Nursery before being tipped out. Has trialled superbly leading up to his resumption and should be better off with the prep under the belt.
3 Danawi (Bet Now: $2.70) is an Exceed And Excel colt on debut for the Tim Martin camp. This chestnut has only had the one public trial, which saw him bolt up over the 1030m here by nearly five lengths in really good time. Would have hesitated had the trial been shorter, but it was a hard 1030m, which looks a good grounding.
10 The Autumn Sun (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Redoute’s Choice colt on debut for the Chris Waller yard. This bloke looks well above average who has had a couple of preps without racing. Two trials in the Summer were good, tipped out, and has come back this time in, with another couple of trials really catching the eye. Shocked if he didn’t measure up.
Race 3. (13:55) Unconquered Plate 1200m
11 Separated (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to have been given a good grounding to run well on debut. This girl by All Too Hard for the John O’Shea yard bolted up in a recent 1050m trial here. Was up on speed then when clicked up by Tim Clark, she put them away and won quite well. Looks ready to run well on debut.
4 Colimbina (Bet Now: $3.50) does look the obvious. This girl battled away quite well first up behind Pure Elation, who looks a potential star, so that form reads really well. She then stepped up to 1200m at Warwick Farm and tried hard but had to settle for second to Gem Song. The Randwick 1200m should suit her and she’ll be strong late.
9 Mandalong One Up (Bet Now: $26.00) could be one to include in wider exotics. Trialled up okay I thought prior to debuting at Wyong where she got a mile back in the run and never really looked likely but she wound up quite well I thought when fifth to Teodosio. Up to 1200m, senior jock on are ticks and stable are producing some nice younger types.
Race 4. (14:30) Battle Of Amiens Handicap (75) 1600m
8 Velocita (Bet Now: $2.30) on top for me. Chris Waller trains this filly, who is on the Oaks path. Resumed at the Rosehill midweeks on April 2 where she was heavily backed and aided by a Blake Shinn peach, the filly proved too good for Savacool, who franked the form at Caulfield. Taking on the older mares is never easy, but I think she can handle it.
7 Heartlings (Bet Now: $18.00) is the big improver. Kerry Parker tried to get this girl qualified for the Provincial Championships and went close on a couple of occasions but couldn’t quite get there. Is a proven city performer who has run well at Randwick before and this is a significant drop in depth so she can bounce back hard.
13 Akiko Gold (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Team Clarke trained mare from Braidwood who did a great job to win fresh over the 1425m at Moruya given she was first up without a trial. Punters knew though because she was heavily backed. Has failed before in town but off the resumption, she looks a different horse now.
Race 5. (15:10) Invictus Sprint (78) 1000m
1 Ozark (Bet Now: $8.00) on top but not much confidence to be honest because it’s a real dart board job. In saying that, this horse ran some ripping races in the Spring/Summer behind some quality types, including Fickle Folly and Test The World. Been given a couple of quiet trials and I reckon he’s been set to run well fresh at the five furlongs.
6 Hilary Step (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of California Dane that is resuming here. She ended her Spring/Summer prep on a high with an all the way win at Canterbury under Deanne Panya. Love seeing horses end a prep on a winning note and though the recent trial was just soft, she’s brilliant enough to run well.
10 Fabry (Bet Now: $13.00) is an absolute beauty for the Neil Godbolt team. He just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Ran over 1100m at the Rosehill midweeks where he was up near the speed throughout and tried hard but just no match for Marble, who was desperately unlucky in the Mick Dittman last Saturday so the form reads well.
Race 6. (15:45) Anzac Day Cup (89) 1800m
I think the bet here is definitely 4 Goathland (Bet Now: $6.00), a former Lloyd Williams runner making his debut for the in form Kim Waugh team. Had a couple of preps for Lloyd back in Victoria and ran well behind some quality types. First up at 1800m is an ask, but gee he has looked the part in a couple of sharp trial wins.
1 Etymology (Bet Now: $6.50) a last start winner at Moruya…doesn’t sound right but that is what happened for the multiple Group l place getter. He needed a confidence boost and what better place to get it than at the country, where he took on camels and spanked them. That could well be the confidence boost he needs to go on with it.
7 Perfect Rhyme (Bet Now: $12.00) is the interesting runner. This mare drops significantly in grade and depth after contesting the Coolmore Legacy last time out where she was pretty much no hope and ran accordingly behind star filly Alizee. Been a long time since she has faced a field as weak as this, and gets out to an ideal trip. She can improve big time.
Race 7. (16:20) Beersheba Handicap (79) 1200m
You’d think only bad luck beats 6 Cradle Mountain (Bet Now: $2.60) here. He is a very promising galloper for Clare Cunningham who is first up here after an outstanding three run prep in the Summer where he spanked them each start and ran sizzling time. Looks an ideal Brisbane Carnival horse and looks ready to go off a sharp trial win at the Farm.
8 Beacon (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the only serious threat to Cradle Mountain. Quality three year old that resumes for James Cummings. Showed good promise last prep, winning a couple of races impressively in town. Has had a couple of nice trials leading up to his resumption and he draws well. Definite threat.
13 The Passage (Bet Now: $20.00) is a big watch for mine. Former Darren Weir runner making his debut for the Snowden camp. His form when trained in Victoria does read quite well for this and his two trials leading up to his first run for the new stable have been very good. Wouldn’t be shocked if there was a market push.
Race 8. (16:55) Last Post Handicap (70) 1400m
I’ll take a chance on 1 Lead Choreographer (Bet Now: $17.00). He can be a bit hit and miss but he is a horse who does his best racing when produced fresh and overall, this is a thin race. Comes here with just one 900m trial under the belt but I thought it was pretty good behind Eckstein. Happy to have something small each way on him.
3 Pure Rebel (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Gary Portelli trained four year old who was just at double figures when resuming at the Warwick Farm midweeks where he got back to near last in the run but finished off quite strongly late in the piece when third to Good Weather. Hard horse to catch but the resumption was good enough.
10 General Artie (Bet Now: $20.00) deserves a crack in town. Kellie Harding rode the horse a treat last time out at Scone, getting the box seat sit off a genuine tempo before cutting back to the inside and finishing best to score. Run prior behind Bolord was a beauty and that horse has run well since. I think he should be included in multiples.
