Anzac Day racing in Queensland heads to Beaudesert where eight races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:18) TAB Handicap (55) 1650m
This is one of the easier races that 1 Charming Prince (Bet Now: $5.00) has contested in some time and I think the drop in grade/depth should see her prove hard to beat. Ran over 1800m at the Gold Coast last time where he was near the speed all the way and battled away well in defeat behind a progressive galloper in Spanish Hurricane. That form does read well for this.
3 Gwapo (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Scott Morrisey trained gelding who comes through the Spanish Hurricane race mentioned above where he was midfield throughout and looked to travel well but couldn’t find much in the straight when asked for a big effort. He is a winner at Beaudesert and can sit a touch closer in the run from the good draw if Murphy takes advantage of it.
Expecting improvement second up from the Paul Butterworth trained 5 Uber Mover (Bet Now: $9.50), a potential QLD Derby candidate but will need to take the step up immediately. Resumed over 1400m at the Gold Coast where the distance was to short for him and I’m not sure he was 100% happy on the rain affected surface. Back on firmer footing, an improved showing wouldn’t surprise.
Race 2. (12:52) Spill The Beans @ Aquis Handicap (55) 1650m
Happy to side with the Ben Robinson trained 9 Alfie Junior (Bet Now: $9.50). Looked in need of the run first up behind Our Rocky here before going to Lismore where he worked home well against the track pattern to run third to Annihilation. Both runs have been at 1400m this time in and last start, signs were clearly there that he wants further, which he gets here. Hard to beat.
5 Chicago Nights (Bet Now: $3.10) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but runs very honestly and is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize. Latest run came over the mile at the Sunny Coast when near the speed all the way and battled away well in defeat when third to the in form Brickhall. Does no work from the draw and the form lines read well for a 55 at Beaudesert.
4 Shinar (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Bernadini for the in form Ethan Ensby stable who ran over the mile at Gatton last time out when off the speed and chasing hard all the way in what was a real slog to the line when third to Rewa Lad in a race which had far more depth than what he faces here. First look at the mile here, so that should him in good stead for this assignment.
Race 3. (13:27) TAB Rewards Handicap (60) 2450m
Happy to be with 3 Fencourt (Bet Now: $2.70) for Ethan Ensby, who finished well to win last time out over 2000m at Gatton, under a heavy ride from Masuda, who remains on here. He really attacked the line late despite it being a short straight and was far too good. Think the extra trip will only help his cause and the overall depth here is similar to what he beat last time.
I think up to the 12 furlongs will really suit the Ben Currie trained 4 Excelebration Gold (Bet Now: $1.90). Has run over 2000m at his past couple and has just found it too short for mine, getting back in the run, flat footed when the sprint goes on, but picks up and is good to the line and through it, so the 2400m should be okay for him and forecast for rain won’t be a negative.
This is comfortably the easiest race that 1 Slaughter Bay (Bet Now: $15.00) has contested in some time and has to be respected. Ran over 1800m at the Sunny Coast last time, coming back in trip from 2200m, and just found them a bit sharp when down the track behind Galaxy Guru. This looks as if it will be a real slog, and down to this level, this six year old is a live chance.
Race 4. (14:02) Beaudesert RSL Maiden Plate 1400m
6 Arc Of Gold (Bet Now: $4.50) does look one of the hardest to beat here for the Gary Duncan yard. Solid enough when resuming over 1100m before stepping up to 1400m at the Sunny Coast when on speed and hit the front, looking home until the final stride when nabbed on the peg by impressive debut winner Fruedinks. Has the 1400m run under the belt so should be better for it.
5 The Demtel Man (Bet Now: $5.00) is a leading contender. Les Kelly trains this bloke, who is raced over the Gold Coast 1300m in both runs back from a break, the latest seeing him wide no cover throughout but battling away well in defeat. Tricky draw, but third up, he should just about be ready fitness wise and Dan Griffin is riding in super form at the moment.
This is the easiest race 17 Powerful Lass (Bet Now: $7.00) has contested to date so an improved showing wouldn’t shock at all. Not sure she was entirely happy on the wet surface first up in the same maiden that The Demtel Man contested. Does get a little weight pull on that horse here and a better barrier. Prefer to watch than back, but I think she’ll run much better than what she has to date.
Race 5. (14:37) Mishani Racing Maiden Handicap 1100m
Huge watch on 1 All Stars (Bet Now: $1.80), a former Mick Price runner that makes his Queensland debut for the Billy Healey stable. This bloke had two runs when trained by Price, resulting in a debut second to the Stakes winner Wild Planet before a close up fourth at Bairnsdale. Now with Healey, gelded, and his two trials have been very good to the eye. Happy to be with him.
I’m keen to see the Ben Robinson trained 12 Sportini (Bet Now: $16.00) going close to winning. Has had two runs for the stable, closing off well first up over 900m at the Gold Coast before going to Lismore when wide no cover for the trip and fighting on strongly to run second to Chiaki. On the home track now and with better luck in running this time around, she’ll take some beating.
8 Ten Large (Bet Now: $17.00) should welcome the overall drop in depth compared to what he’s faced recently, running in some pretty handy maiden races at the Gold Coast, the latest seeing him run fifth to Miracle Worker. Tricky draw to overcome, but the form around him does read better than most engaged here and with luck in running, he can take this out for sure.
Race 6. (15:17) Barrier Reef Pools Handicap (58) 1100m
Does look a good race for the Rob Heathcoate trained 5 Miss Defiance (Bet Now: $4.80), who is first up here. Put together a string of placings at the back end of last prep at both the Sunny Coast and Gold Coast, and the form out of each of those races has been franked, which is a good sign. Trialled well, soft draw, senior jock on, not much depth…hard to beat for mine.
12 Ale Vongale (Bet Now: $7.00) a threat for me me here. Rob Heathcoate trains this three year old filly, who is first up after a four run Summer prep where she didn’t win but placed on a couple of occasions, including a run here behind Plateau Pearl. Tongue Tie goes on for this first up assignment and I thought her recent trial win at Doomben was more than encouraging. Happy to have her on top.
8 Indy Bourbon (Bet Now: $8.00) is a daughter of Raheeb who looks to be going okay. Is a month between runs since racing at the Gold Coast against the fillies and mares where she seemed to have her chance when down the track behind Beat Za Drum in a race where the form is yet to be ticked off. Probably doesn’t have to be for a 58 at Beaudesert to be fair. Leading chance with her A Game.
Race 7. (15:52) Beaudesert Cup June 22 Handicap (58) 1100m
Looks a good race for the Desleigh Forster trained 7 For The Records (Bet Now: $3.30), a three year old who comes here off the back of a last start second at Ipswich where he tried hard but was no match for the above average Tony Gollan galloper, Don’t You Know Him. That does read quite well for a thin 58 at Beaudesert and off the first up win, he’s certainly good enough to beat these.
10 Commissioner (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Stratum who is second up for the Brad Witt stable. This three year old resumed over 1200m at Lismore where I thought it was a rather strange steer from Shannon Doyle. Didn’t give the horse much hope of winning I thought and in the end, the run was quite good. Back to 1100m a little query, but has a touch of quality about him.
14 Nakanai (Bet Now: $34.00) is a ten year old trained by Mel Eggleston who is having start 129 here. He’s been a beauty for a number of years and while his best days are well and truly behind him, he can bob up every now and then and this is the sort of race he could well do that. Ran over 1200m at Ipswich last time when back and never really in the hunt behind Reef Knot. Back to this level, an improved showing wouldn’t surprise.
Race 8. (16:27) Racing @ Beaudesert July 27 Handicap (60) 1400m
7 Wack’em (Bet Now: $5.50) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but gee he finds a winnable race. Ran over 1400m on his home track at the Gold Coast last start where he was back off a slow tempo but made up good ground in a solid effort when third to Flying Machine. Been a while since he has won, but you’d struggle to find a race as easy as this that he’s contested for a while. Hard to beat I reckon.
1 Our Rocky (Bet Now: $4.70) is an absolute beauty for the Don Pearson stable who always runs well at this level and does tend to save his best for Beaudesert. Won at this track/distance two back before going to Ipswich when doing work in the run and sticking on really well in defeat I thought behind Axella. Proven weight carrier and back to his favourite track, think he only runs well.
4 Coolmunda (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Patrick Sexton trained galloper who should appreciate the firmer track after racing on a bog at the Toowoomba midweeks last time where he really struggled in the conditions in a race won by Angel Dane, who was most unlucky at the Saturday meet at Toowoomba. That form reads okay, gate one and up to 1400m looks an ideal set up.
