Randwick will host their traditional Anzac Day meeting on Thursday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:45) Light Horse Brigade Handicap 1400m
Going with a first starter in the shape of the Mark Newnham trained 2 The Golden Bear (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS). This bloke has had seven trials in readiness for his first start, three of those being this time in. Latest trial came at Warwick Farm when back, and was under pressure, but responded and was quite good late behind the well performed McCreery. Looks to have the grounding for a decent showing on debut.
6 Romantic Whisper (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a filly trained by the WaterBott stable who got back in the run when resuming in a Newcastle maiden, against the pattern from last prep, but she worked to the line quite well I thought behind impressive winner and stablemate Got Your Six. Likely lands in front this time around and would be good to see Rachel King return to race riding a winner.
7 Zenardini (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a Bernadini filly for Les Bridge resuming. This girl has trialled previously like a city class horse but for the most part has struggled on race day, but I will say some of her race day form just reads so well, with the likes of Nakeeta Jane and Madam Rouge in there. Two trials leading up to her return have been good and 1400m first up tells me she’s just about ready.
Race 2. (13:20) Armistice Plate 1200m
Just needs luck from the draw and 7 Libertini (Bet Now: $1.85 TOP ODDS) will be too good. Had trialled up well prior to debuting in the Kindergarten where she was back and a bit new but loved the way she found the line behind impressive winner and an above average youngster in Bivouac. Had she drawn a better barrier, she’d be an absolute moral, but still clearly the one to beat from the barrier.
13 Tracy May (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a Chris Waller first starter that is well bred and is hard in the market. The dam is a half to Typhoon Tracy, so on breeding, she should be handy, and that looked the case in a recent trial win when winning under minimal pressure, beating Flit, who should have won the Percy Sykes, so that form reads well and J Mac booked for the first start.
9 Our Girl Sniti (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is a Ron Quin trained filly who was unwanted in betting when debuting on a bog at Warwick Farm and despite doing work in the run out wide, she stuck to her guns really well in defeat behind Wayupinthesky, a race which looked to have depth to it and time was good relative to the day. With improvement from that, she can run well here.
Race 3. (13:55) Battle Of Amiens Plate 1200m
Have to side with the handy looking 12 Twentyfour Carat (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS). John O’Shea trains this I Am Invincible colt, who is on debut after debuting on the Kenso track on Jan 5 when back and making up good ground in an excellent first run behind Hightail, who went on to place in the Magic Millions, so the form reads well and didn’t mind the way he trialled. Hard to beat for mine.
7 Lost Light (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) a threat for me. Team Hawkes trains this son of Deep Field, who debuted over 1000m at Kembla Grange where he was given every chance by Koby Jennings and looked the winner but was bloused on the peg. That form was ticked off last Saturday and on breeding, I dare say the 1200m will be ideal for this bloke and the stable can produce a decent youngster this time of year.
9 Ready To Humble (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Rubick for Matty Dunn who had trialled up well prior to debuting at Eagle Farm when on speed, like he was in the trials, and he battled away well though well held by Devil’s Temptation, a youngster with big wraps on him, so I think that form is okay and Matty Dunn doesn’t bring them to Sydney unless he thinks they’ll measure up.
Race 4. (14:30) Beersheba Handicap (72) 1600m
Really keen to see how 7 Wild Impact (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) resumes. She’s a daughter of Deep Impact for John Thompson who has only had the one career start, which came over the mile at Newcastle back in September when looking in a bit of bother getting clear air but once she got it, she sprinted and was most impressive. Two trials leading into her return. First trial was plain, but she looked much more forward in the second trial and do like her at the mile first up.
5 Lady Evelyn (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a Jason Deamer trained mare who is a beauty. Rarely runs a bad race and on the form guide, it might look as if the first up run on the Kenso track was below par, but she didn’t get much luck in the straight and should have finished closer behind Sure Knee, who ran well at Caulfield on Saturday to frank the form. Up to the mile, good second up record, she can bounce back.
Really interesting runner is 3 Una Fuerza (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS), a former American mare making her Australian debut for the Jean Dubois stable. Her form from there doesn’t read that great, but new home, new surroundings, could improve out of sight. No replay available for the Kembla trial, but all I can say is that the time was solid and 1600m fresh tells me plenty of work has been put in.
Race 5. (15:10) Anzac Day Cup (88) 1800m
Confidence levels aren’t high but landed with 7 Girl Tuesday (Bet Now: $3.80), a mare who I had sucked after her second up run, where she did bugger all, much like the first up run. Contested blacktype at her next two and was just fair. Been freshened up and looked sharp in a 1200m trial win at Warwick Farm. If she brought her effort from the first prep, she’d win this, clearly. Just not sure where she’s at but gambling Waller has her right.
1 Hogmanay (Bet Now: $7.50) has been quite good in three runs back from a decent spell for the Chris Waller stable. Good resumption behind Star Of The Seas before second up syndrome. Third up run came at Gosford (Metro) where he was one of a couple of unlucky runners, getting little to no room in the straight when having plenty to offer behind White Boots. Good record at Randwick and can go close.
6 The Bandit (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Richard Freedman trained stayer who did an outstanding job to win first up in the Muswellbrook Cup, charging home from off the pace to get the job done. Been kept on ice since then and the tick over trial behind Pelorus Jack was good and that horse won on Monday, so that reads well and up to 1800m looks only beneficial for this gelding.
Race 6. (15:45) Passchendaele Handicap (70) 1200m
Tricky race but going with the Kris Lees trained filly 3 Reginae (Bet Now: $2.20). Market said she might need the run when resuming at Gosford (Metro) when on speed and trying hard but her condition just gave out late when third to the above average Kylease. Think she’ll take really good improvement from that, bigger track suits and with the run under the belt, she’ll do me.
4 Bare Naked Lady (Bet Now: $6.00) is a daughter of Walking Or Dancing who was hard in the market when resuming at Wyong where she settled off the speed before peeling wider on the turn and finishing off strongly to run a close up third to the above average Trumbull. Off that run, I think the 1200m will be fine for her and stable is having a good run at the moment.
6 Unguarded (Bet Now: $18.00) can certainly win this if she finds her best form. Was good first up behind subsequent Stakes winner Multaja at Hawkesbury before going to Gosford (Metro) where she pulled up 1/5 lame in a total forgive behind Kylease. Has run well in town before, and at Stakes level, so the ability is definitely under the hood. Just depends if she shows it.
Race 7. (16:20) Battle Of Messines Handicap (70) 1400m
2 Wolfe (Bet Now: $1.70) on top but without a great deal of confidence re trials. Promising four year old for the WaterBott stable that resumes, having not raced since beginning his career in the Spring with a couple of dynamic wins after being on speed, clocking good time and the form out of those two races being quite good. The race day form says he wins. The two trials says no. Maybe he’s a race day horse. I’m with him, but not sure I could back him.
7 Something Fast (Bet Now: $11.00) is an interesting runner. Anthony Cummings trains this gelding, who had specking when resuming in a Wyong maiden and the bets at odds were landed. Sat wide no cover and looked gone on the turn but kept finding under Travis Wolfgram and found plenty over the last few strides to cling on. Did he beat much? No, but liked the way he toughed it out and is a first four chance.
Third up from a break, expect improvement from the Danny Williams trained 6 Volpe (Bet Now: $21.00). Ran over 1400m on the Kenso track last time out where he was back in the run, too far back, and just couldn’t get involved at all behind California Concord. Think he’ll be much better suited on firmer footing this time around and the bigger track is a big tick. Must include him in exotics.
Race 8. (16:55) Last Post Handicap (74) 1000m
Hoping for a third up bounce back from the Kristen Buchanan trained 12 Traumatised (Bet Now: $8.00). Sharp first up win at Hawkesbury (Metro) before going to the Kensington track where on face value he was disappointing behind Consider It Done, but I think it was second up syndrome off a dynamic fresh triumph. Third up back on the top of the ground on a big track, he can bounce back for sure.
Interesting runner is 4 Southern Lad (Bet Now: $4.60) a John O’Shea trained gelding who is first up. This bloke hasn’t raced since December 29 over 1200m here when midfield behind a potential Stakes class horse in Deprive. 2/3 first up and has had two trials in readiness for her return and for mine has trialled up really well. Has the weight, but does have a touch of class compared to some of these.
A fast run 1000m will really suit the David Pfieffer trained 6 Crafty Tycoon (Bet Now: $7.00), who has been freshened up since racing over 1150m on the Kenso track when closing off strongly but couldn’t quite finish it off, having to settle for second to Colombina. Does no work from the inside gate and will sit off a likely fast speed…just needs to get luck and clear air.
