25/4/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Ascot, Anzac Day races

A nine race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday where it is Sheila Gwynne Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:13) Anzac Day Maiden 1600m

Back Me

Tricky maiden but going the way of the Neville Parnham trained 3 Interstate (Bet Now: $8.00). He was unwanted in betting when racing over 1500m here last Wednesday, but I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off when third to Irritable Rodnee, beaten just under two lengths. This looks a thin maiden, he’s got gate one and 1600m looks ideal.

Danger

11 Rhythm Star (Bet Now: $6.00) is knocking on the door to get that elusive win. Ran in a 1400m maiden here on Good Friday when clearly no match for Ginger Flyer, but chased to the line and was solid enough in running second. Little query at a strong mile with her, but she’s got the runs on the board compared to most of these.

Long Shot

9 Data Lake (Bet Now: $71.00) hasn’t been too bad in two runs back from a spell. Was okay first up here behind subsequent Saturday winner Last Of The Line before going to Pinjarra last Thursday when not really getting a chance to build the revs in a bit of a forgive run behind Son Of The Sun, who has run well in town before, so the form reads okay and draws out, so gets clear air from the outset.

Race 2. (15:48) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Maiden 1200m

Back Me

7 Igarashi (Bet Now: $5.00) on top, but this isn’t the strongest of maidens going around. This girl is first up, having not raced since November 14 when placing over this track/distance behind Zenaze in a maiden which has turned out to be a decent form reference. Trial winner back on March 9, so market will be the guide but she looks the most progressive of the raced brigade.

Danger

Back up to 1200m should suit the Neville Parnham trained 8 Domineer (Bet Now: $26.00), who was 1200m back to 1100m on Easter Monday at Bunbury and she found the line pretty well when third to Whim Creek, who looks above average, so that form reads well, gets back up to 1200m and draws much better this time around.

Long Shot

4 Looks Like Magic (Bet Now: $18.00) is one I’d include in multiples. Ran in a maiden here two weeks ago where she sat in the box seat from gate one and couldn’t find a great deal in the straight behind Captain Kink. She’s a mare who does seem to race best when ridden cold, so gate one isn’t ideal, but if the breaks go her way, she can be dangerous at a price.

Race 3. (16:23) RSLWA Trophy 1200m

Back Me

Think the class of 1 Starfield Impact (Bet Now: $1.95) nearly gets her home here. Quality filly that won the Supremacy and Gimcrack, which ensured she was fancied in the Karrakatta and I thought she was very brave in defeat after sitting wide no cover for the trip. If the rub of the green goes her way this time around, think she can take it out.

Danger

2 Charleton Eddie (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Team Casey trained juvenile that looks as if he’ll eat up the six furlongs. Gave them a spanking over 1100m here two weeks ago, leading throughout, getting a cheap mid race breather, and really dashing clear on the turn to put them away. Heading in the right direction and is hard to beat here.

Long Shot

8 Purple Pearl (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Dick Turpin filly on debut for the Warwick Bradshaw stable. This girl has had two trials to prepare for her debut, the latest coming over 1000m at Bunbury on Monday when winning by a space and looking to go about her business quite nicely. Big thing going for her is that she has the inside gate/rail to guide her.

Race 4. (17:00) Louise Newman 50th Birthday Handicap 1000m

Back Me

Banking on a hot speed here and allowing 8 Rocky Path (Bet Now: $18.00) to finish over the top. Vaughn Sigley trains this filly, who comes back to 1000m after racing over 1200m here two weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run and finished off strongly when fourth to Son Of A God. Draws wide, back to 1000m…not the best set up on paper, but the speed should be hot and she’ll be charging late.

Danger

4 Lording (Bet Now: $6.00) has done little wrong in two runs back from a break. Landed some big bets when winning first up in a Bunbury maiden and proved that was no fluke when on speed at this track/distance on Good Friday and was pipped late by River Beau. Has the inside gate to use and show the early toe. Can he see them off at the end?

Long Shot

7 Leica Jaguar (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to have his fair share of talent for Neville Parnham. Was keen on him here last Saturday but instead was saved for the midweek meeting where he took on what I thought was a stronger field and despite wanting to throw it away by laying, he showed a bit of class/quality in winning. Back to 1000m, but has a gate to sit handy and be strong at the end.

Race 5. (17:29) Sheila Gwynne Classic 1400m

Have to be with 2 Flower Of War (Bet Now: $2.90). Was five weeks between runs when leading throughout, copping pressure, yet finding enough late to hang on and win the Marjorie Charleson on Good Friday here over 1200m. She’ll improve with that run no doubt and the way the speed maps read, should lead comfortably, so 1400m is no issue.

Danger

I think this race will be a guide as to how well and perhaps how good 3 Angelic Ruler (Bet Now: $1.65) is. Admittedly her previous two preps have been in Melbourne, but she’s still over a year between wins. Resumed in the Marjorie Charleson and got close to beating Flower Of War. 1400m and fitter, rates highly. But it all depends what happens in front and whether or not Flower Of War gets control.

Long Shot

6 Fancy Fox (Bet Now: $19.00) can fill a first four spot. Robin Elliott trains this mare, who is on the quick back up after bolting up last Thursday at Pinjarra over 1400m, sitting off the speed before angling wider and finishing best to score under Lucy Warwick, who remains on for this weekend, if that’s a lead at all. First four contender.

Race 6. (17:56) Gallipoli Handicap (66+) 1400m

Safe option is 3 Cryptic Love (Bet Now: $3.30), a ripping mare for David Harrison. Has run over 1200m here at her past couple, the latest being a fortnight back when near last, peeling wider and chasing strongly when second to the in form Celebrity Queen. She’s looking for 1400m now and hopefully can take advantage of the good gate.

Danger

7 Kakadu (Bet Now: $7.50) is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance back on March 28 when wide with cover before peeling wider and surging strongly, just not quite holding off another in form galloper, Utgard Loki. He is a horse who does run well with a break between outings, so I’d be watching the market.

Long Shot

2 Speeding Comet (Bet Now: $7.00) is a beauty for Simon Miller. Comes through the Celebrity Queen race from a fortnight back over 1200m here and gee he was enormous in defeat, doing a power of work on speed and was entitled to drop away but kept finding and was only picked off the final 100m. Yet to prove himself at 1400m but is racing as if he’ll handle it.

Race 7. (18:26) Lest We Forget Handicap (1MW) 2200m

Have to give 3 Picture Perfect (Bet Now: $8.00) another chance. Impressive winner over 1800m here two back before stepping up to 2400m and he just couldn’t get into the race from off the speed, never really looking likely behind Volkswagon Frank. Form out of that has been good and I think back to 2200m, with better luck, he can take this out.

Danger

9 Vintage Stock (Bet Now: $12.00) is an Alan Matthews trained mare that stepped up to 2100m from the mile at this track on Good Friday where she was given a peach steer just off the speed and loomed large to get the job done but couldn’t quite finish it off. She’s got that hard 2100m run under the belt and that should hold her in good stead.

Long Shot

4 Throwdown (Bet Now: $23.00) is knocking on the door to win. Ran over 2100m here two weeks ago and liked the way he finished his race off behind Black Shadow after getting a fair way back in the run, and was held up for a few strides. Tricky draw, but should get back, find cover and look to finish over the top of these.

Race 8. (18:53) Diggers Cup (78+) 1800m

Back Me

He’s a beauty 11 King Blitz (Bet Now: $5.00) and I think he can measure up here. Was quite keen on him when he raced here two weeks ago over the mile and despite carrying 62kg, he was far too good in an impressive display on the quick back up. Unknown at 1800m, but draws well and won’t know himself with 55kg on his back.

Danger

7 Mystery Miss (Bet Now: $3.10) has her confidence up and she can go right on with it. Pike got on her two weeks back at the mile here and he weaved some magic to get her home, sitting patiently out the back before getting the splits between runners and diving through strongly to win. She’ll eat up 1800m and is hard to beat.

Long Shot

9 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $27.00) had been teasing to run well and indeed he did a fortnight back here behind Mystery Miss, running third. Had the suck in behind the speed and had his chance to win, but was still good in running third. Gets back up to 1800m and from the inside gate, senior jock on, he can go close against these.

Race 9. (19:20) Last Post Handicap (72+) 1100m

Think the class of 1 Dig Deep (Bet Now: $2.90) gets him home. Quality three year old that resumes for the Pearce camp, having not raced since the Kingston Town Classic when down the track behind Kay Cee. To me, he’s a 1200-1400m horse and his recent trial win was very good I thought. He’s a yard/market watch but IMO, his best is better than these.

Danger

2 Laverrod (Bet Now: $2.70) is racing really well this time in for Team Casey, who ran over 1100m here three weeks ago. He was held up for a few strides at a vital stage in the straight and should have finished closer, perhaps should have won, when second to Red Can Man. Tricky draw, but hopefully gets three wide cover and launches late.

Long Shot

11 Potent Secret (Bet Now: $34.00) comes back to metro level after racing at the provincials in recent times. Comes to town in winning form after spanking them over 1200m at Albany last time out, sitting off the speed before peeling wider and showing a good turn of foot to put them away well. Draws an inside gate, not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
