Flemington will host its traditional Anzac Day meeting this Sunday, headlined by the St Leger (2800m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
VRC St Leger 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the VRC St Leger
Race 1. (13:00) William Newton Vc Hcp 2600m
I think this is a race in two. The upside does sit with 4 Amade (Bet Now: $3.20), who was very good in his Australian debut in the Easter Cup. He was bolting for a run and he didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight. Still ran a super race when fourth to Hang Man. Gets to a more suitable trip, more upside than most and has class/quality.
1 Persan (Bet Now: $1.95) is just a beauty and his last 12 months really has been remarkable. You could easily make a case that he is the best 2400m+ horse trained in Australia. That was the case in the Melbourne Cup and he has held that form in two runs back, the latest being the Easter Cup when a narrow second to Hang Man. Gets to his pet track, out to a more ideal trip…hard to beat.
I reckon this is an audit for 6 Mohican Heights (Bet Now: $4.20), whether he’s good enough to have a crack at the Andrew Ramsden with an eye towards the Melbourne Cup. Is he that good? The measuring stick is Persan, so I think this is a great challenge for him. Has been impressive his past two, firstly at Mornington in a sit/sprint, then was impressive again at Caulfield in a proper staying test, so he’s versatile and I think can measure up and run well.
Race 2. (13:35) Auckland Racing Club (bm84) 1600m
1 Re Edit (Bet Now: $2.70) should prove hard to beat here for Chris Waller. Had fresh legs when racing at Caulfield several weeks ago and liked the way she worked home from the back when second to impressive winner and stablemate Skyman. Think the key to her is dry ground and fresh legs, and three weeks between runs, that is the set up she gets here.
5 Good And Proper (Bet Now: $4.60) is flying for the Ellerton/Zahra camp and getting to the mile is a big tick. Huge effort in defeat two back in the Bendigo Bracelet before racing last Saturday in the Distaff at Caulfield, surging hard late off a moderate speed when third to Thousand Wishes. Hard to beat up in trip.
9 Carrie (Bet Now: $12.00) is a progressive mare for Danny O’Brien that resumed on testing ground at Ballarat. Was wide and doing work in the run, but battled on pretty well I thought when third to Indispensable, beaten just under a half length. Craig Williams is finding form and riding very well at the moment, so this mare commands respect.
Race 3. (14:10) Wgcdr Ian Bayles Hcp 1000m
4 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $11.00) is a talented animal for Lindsey Smith that resumes. This grey hasn’t raced since a 955m race at the Valley where nothing really went right for him behind Alfa Oro, who found the lead and was just too sharp. Liked his recent Terang jumpout and gets in quite well after the claim.
5 Sartorial Splendor (Bet Now: $2.80) will likely lead this field up and give a big sight. Ran in the Sword Of Mercy race from three weeks ago at Caulfield where he sizzled along in front and gave a sight, but just felt the pinch late when fourth. Jump and run from the outset and Mick Dee has a good record on him.
The best version of 1 Halvorsen (Bet Now: $4.40) is certainly capable and the only time this horse has performed at a high level is when Andrew Mallyon steers. He is on for this race, the first time since the horse last showed positive form, which was a win in the Standish on New Years Day 2020. His three runs back have been plain, but this is the weakest race he has contested in a long time and a recent Cranbourne jumpout was encouraging.
Race 4. (14:45) Anzac Day Stks 1400m
The safe option looks to be 4 Three Kings (Bet Now: $5.00) for the McEvoy camp. Hasn’t really done much wrong in three career outings, but I thought he was very impressive when beating them up over 1400m at Ballarat. Sat on speed before being clicked up and away he went. He was dominant and you’d like to think there is more to come.
12 Biscayne Bay (Bet Now: $9.00) has a horror draw to overcome but I reckon she has a decent engine under the hood. Sustained speed from Scorched Earth was impressive on this girls debut at Murray Bridge so be forgiving. Then went to Sandown when sitting back off a reasonable tempo before easing wider and she unleashed a powerful finale to get up and win. If she’s within range on the turn, she’s good enough.
15 Identical (Bet Now: $41.00) is racing like the 1400m will be ideal. Came from a long way back over 1200m at Sandown last time out and worked home strongly when third to Under The Dunes, who does look above average. Should be able to get three wide cover from the draw and launch late.
Race 5. (15:20) Raaf Centenary Hcp 1400m
7 Real Sensation (Bet Now: $6.00) is heading towards a Queensland Derby so I’m keen to see how he goes. Several weeks between runs since racing on that bottomless Valley track on All Star Mile where they really walked home, running close to 30 seconds the last 400m in what was a brutally run race. Another stride and he wins.
Good little test here for 2 South Parade (Bet Now: $5.00) but John Sadler has him flying at the moment, winning three on the bounce, with his last coming at Sandown after leading throughout. He’s got the right racing pattern to give himself every chance back up to Saturday level and his confidence is sky high.
Fresh legs, back to 1400m, look for him to find the line with an eye towards Brisbane. 8 Field Of Roses (Bet Now: $13.00) looks to be in for a good prep. Phillip Stokes trained gelding that resumed against the older horses over 1200m at Pakenham where he was back in a slowly run race, but loved the way he found the line late when third to Deep Dive. Fitter and up to 1400m, he’s very likeable.
Race 6. (15:55) Vrc St Leger 2800m
No Liquero so this race is seemingly open, but I’m clearly with 3 Through Irish Eyes (Bet Now: $2.90) for the Maher/Eustace camp. I didn’t think it was the best steer from Zahra at Caulfield last time, trying to probe for narrow splits instead of easing wider for clear air and building momentum. He took a fair amount of ground off Liquero and now at 2800m on the bigger track, I can’t see anything other than a win.
1 Favreau (Bet Now: $2.70) does bring here the #SF, which usually stands up in this race as we have seen in recent years. He was far from disgraced I thought in the Derby behind Explosive Jack. The query is that was a solidly run 2400m and he didn’t see it out, so the 2800m here is a question. But, it’s a significant drop in grade/depth.
8 Tictoc Tictoc (Bet Now: $13.00) will put herself on speed and give her all. That was the case when she broke her maiden status at Bendigo over 2400m last time, leading throughout and she was strong to the line. Leading throughout in a St Leger will be an ask, but she’s in form and will give herself every chance.
Race 7. (16:30) The Les Carlyon 1700m
I hope he’s missed in the market and you can get a decent price about 4 Warning (Bet Now: $12.00). Freshened up, with eyes towards Queensland perhaps? Resumed in the Australian Cup, which was an unusual kick off point and he didn’t really fire a shot. Last time he was at this distance range at Flemington, he was three lengths off Fierce Impact in a Makybe Diva. Any hint of that here and he’ll win, so I think he’s worth a ticket, provided he’s decent odds.
9 Kenya (Bet Now: $3.00) is a fascinating runner. Some suggest he could be a Group l horse this year. Not sure myself, but he does have a good engine under the hood. Resumes after a two run Spring prep. Smashed the clock when winning at Mornington before a game second to Junipal. If he’s anywhere near right, he can win.
Teenage love is confusing. What is more confusing is the prep Neville Parnham has produced with 7 Platoon (Bet Now: $8.50). The prep this horse has had does explain why the stable has such an awful strike rate in WA, so I’m not sure how this horse will go, but back onto a firmer deck and at a truly run 1700m is where he can bounce back.
Race 8. (17:05) Flt Lt Peter Armytage Hcp 1700m
I’m keen on 4 Black Penn (Bet Now: $9.00) in the get out. To me, he just looks a big track horse. That was clearly the case fresh when winning his maiden at Pakenham. Arguably should have won the Mornington Guineas and his two subsequent runs at Caulfield have been fair. Back to a big track, up in trip, more genuine tempo…I’m keen on his chances.
5 Horrifying (Bet Now: $4.40) has indeed a horror draw to overcome but he comes here with his confidence sky high. He was $1.24 last start at Sandown so was expected to give them a galloping lesson and pretty much did so in what was a barrier trial for prizemoney. This will be a good test to see where he is at.
13 Oh So Far (Bet Now: $101.00) is a Mick Kent trained filly that I think can measure up here. Several weeks between runs since breaking her maiden status at Pakenham, where she charged home from the back to get up and win in good style. Harder here, but in an astute camp and should be strong at the end.
