Caulfield is where Victorian metro racing heads to this Saturday with nine races set down. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:50) Take It To The Neds Level Hcp 1200m
2 Unusual Culture (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) on top. Former Kiwi filly that makes her Australian debut for the Maher/Eustace camp. She moved very well on speed in a Horsham jumpout, leading throughout under Johnny Allen and looked a nice horse. L Meech on, it looks clear. Jump on the bunny and prove hard to run down.
1 She’s All Class (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) is a huge watch. Formerly with Chris Waller but is now with the Maher/Eustace camp. She has let Brae and the team down after such a promising two year old, but we have seen that a change of scenery can work wonders with these enigmas. Watch the market and see what it does.
3 Jezoulenko (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver. Matty Ellerton trained three year old that is several weeks between runs since resuming here where he got back to near last in the run and failed to fire a shot behind Winning Verse. That was too bad to be true, so he gets another look.
Race 2. (12:25) Neds Punters Toolbox Hcp 1100m
I’m in the corner of 3 Ghaanati (Bet Now: $1.50 TOP ODDS) but I certainly won’t be declaring her. Made an absolute mess of them on debut down the straight at Flemington and visually, he was quite impressive, but what did she beat? I am saying, for the most part, nothing. But, she looks a good mover, better for the run…I think she wins, but not taking the silly shorts.
5 She Dances (Bet Now: $5.00) will be worthy competition. Peter Moody trains and she produced sustained speed to bolt up on debut at Sandown two weeks ago, leading throughout under a peach front running steer from Linda Meech, who remains on for this, and she’ll be out of trouble on speed, giving the fav a decent race.
11 Thron Bone (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver up in trip for Jerome Hunter. Resumed over 1000m at Sale where he got back to near last in the run and was a real eye catcher late in the piece behind She Dances. That run was very good, but was it a one off, or can he improve? Interesting to see how he goes.
Race 3. (13:00) Neds Fully Loaded (Bm84) 1100m
5 Duchess Of Dorset (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) can be a big improver with L Meech back aboard. Resumed over 975m at Swan Hill and on face value, she was very plain late in the piece behind Jagged Edge. Fitter and up in trip, L Meech back steering, expect this mare to pounce on the lead and take beating.
10 Dance To Dubai (Bet Now: $3.30) wanted to lay in badly last start when racing here, so drawing gate one is a big tick for her. Impressive first up win here the statr prior, and getting a great run in transit near the speed, I think she’ll take a power of beating against this lot.
11 Energy Within (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) saves her best for Mornington but she has a touch of quality about her. Last run was in the Proud Miss at Group level when down the track behind Seradess. She’d be near a good thing if this was at Mornington but with her form lines, she commands respect.
Race 4. (13:35) Neds Whatever You Bet On Qlty 2000m
2 No Effort (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) has a fab record at the Caulfield 2000m. Four weeks between runs since bolting up at this track/distance where she led throughout and was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure to win. She has such a good racing style and that holds her in good stead.
6 D’Aguilar (Bet Now: $3.90) is on the seven day back up for Patty Payne after racing last Saturday at Flemington over the mile where he was given a peach by Billy Egan and presented to win, but couldn’t quite finish the job. Hard fit now and up in trip, I think he’ll run a much improved race.
7 El Gladiator (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited up in trip for Craig Thornton. Australian debut came a few weeks back over 1800m at Flemington and he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Welsh Legend in a pleasing first up effort. Like him up in trip, got good upside and his best NZ form is good enough to measure up in a race like this.
Race 5. (14:10) Neds Same Race Multi (Bm78) 1600m
1 Chief Altony (Bet Now: $2.60) is an absolute swimmer who should get conditions to suit. Loved the way he kept finding the line two weeks ago at Sandown when second to Visinari, who ran a narrwo second to Tuvalu last Saturday, so the form reads well and he’s a proven weight carrier.
7 Beltoro (Bet Now: $9.50) can bounce back. He drops a fair bit in grade/depth after contesting the Swan Hill Cup where they rode him with intent and it backfired, tiring late behind Paul’s Regret. I think he’ll be much better with a sit, and that should eventuate from the gate. Expect improvement.
4 Falls (Bet Now: $14.00) is racing well. Just went a bit too keen on speed at Sandown last time but despite that, he actually stuck on pretty well in defeat behind an in form Visinari. If he can harness his energy a bit better, he’s certainly good enough to take this out, so I’m not penning him.
Race 6. (14:45) Lamaro's Hotel Hcp 1000m
Good test here for 7 Inundation (Bet Now: $2.40) but he looks a promising animal for the Price/Kent camp. 2/2 this time in, winning fresh in a Mornington maiden before going to the Pakenham Synthetic where he made an absolute mess from on speed. He has sustained speed and that is suited to the short course. Hard to beat.
4 Squid Game (Bet Now: $4.20) is a good horse that has upside. Was several weeks between runs when racing behind Passive Aggressive a few weeks back and while he was never picking up the filly, his finale was more than sound. Around a bend is a query, but he’s genuine. Leading contender.
I reckon a fast run 1000m will suit 2 Kooled (Bet Now: $12.00). Ran down the straight three weeks back at Flemington where he got a tad keen on speed and just felt the pinch late behind Passive Aggressive, and we know what she did last Saturday. Soft run from the gate, he’s a must for multiples.
Race 7. (15:20) Miss Liddy's Giddyap Lap-Bm84 1200m
I’ll take a chance on 5 Zoltan (Bet Now: $10.00), who resumes for Symon Wilde. Handy galloper that has had one jumpout to get ready for his return, which was over 1000m at Mortlake, and gee he looked to move well to my eye when second under a hold. Runs well fresh and this is a winnable race.
3 Blaze A Trail (Bet Now: $3.40) is a pure dry tracker so with that in mind, I am on guard with the forecast for rain on Friday. He went to Caulfield first up and on dry ground, he is very effective. He sat wide but kept finding the line and drove hard late to win. Just wants a dry deck, and if he gets that here, he’s the one to beat.
11 The General (Bet Now: $6.50) gets right down in the weights and can run a bold race from near the speed. Interesting he was scratched from a weak race at Cranbourne on Wednesday to be saved for this. Ran over 1100m at Ballarat last time where he lumped 62.5kg on speed and fought on pretty well behind a handy horse, Hickok. Tumbles in weight, jumps on the bunny and won’t mind getting his toe in.
Race 8. (16:00) Stephen Howell Mem. Trophy Hcp 1400m
9 Cardinal Gem… (Bet Now: $2.90) surely the rub of the green will go his way? Three weeks between runs since racing over this trip at Flemington and really, any hint of clear air and he wins, but unfortunately he got badly checked in the straight and that sealed his fate. He’s flying, deserves a win and gets his chance.
2 Oriental Legend (Bet Now: $14.00) is sneaky flying. Lovely ride from Nolen saw him win two back at Pakenham before going to Caulfeild where he didn’t quite get the rub of the green when it mattered and should have finished closer behind Hopon Harry. Dangerous if he gets clear air.
12 Masterful (Bet Now: $21.00) looks a horse with talent for Julius Sandhu. Wide no cover when resuming in a Mornington maiden but he kept trucking into the race and when asked for the big effort, he found and drew clear late to win impressively. Good test here, but wouldn’t shock if he can pinch a first four spot.
Race 9. (16:33) Catanach's Jewellers (Bm84)
Gee I am interested in 11 He’s Our Bonneval (Bet Now: $5.00). Former UK miler that makes his Australian debut for the Busuttin/Young camp. His UK form reads just so well, his latest run being a second to Dark Shift, who has gone on to win multiple races since, including the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. His two jumpouts at Cranbourne have been outstanding to the eye and really, I think he could Group class at least. Really keen on him in the get out.
4 Mr Exclusive (Bet Now: $7.00) is a two time second up winner and the first up run was very encouraging. That first up run came here four weeks ago when near the speed and loomed to win but being fresh, condition just gave out when a narrow third to D’Aguilar. Fitter, he’ll take beating.
7 Polanco (Bet Now: $10.00) has found positive form…can he hold it? He was specked at a big price two weeks back at Sandown and those who took the big odds knew what they were doing because he ran a much improved race when a narrow second to Umgawa. He’s hit and miss, but if he runs up to last time, he’ll be in the finish.
