The Brisbane Summer Carnival continues this Saturday at Eagle Farm with several feature races across the meeting. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Grand Prix Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Grand Prix Stakes
Race 1. (13:13) Best Bred Spirit Of Booms-bm78 2200m
8 Warp Speed (Bet Now: $2.25) has done a really good job this time in and I think has to be respected. Ran here last Wednesday where I thought Adin Thompson gave him a 12/10 steer, sitting off the speed before angling into clear air late and in a drive to the line, he was able to finish best. Harder here, but have to like the way he’s going about it.
2 Seentoomany (Bet Now: $5.50) should welcome the drop back to 78 grade. Forget she went around in a much harder race three weeks ago won by So You Win. Start prior at this level, she got badly checked at a vital stage and was eased down the last little bit. Brad Stewart jumps back on and the depth here, as a whole, is thin.
7 Populist (Bet Now: $6.00) can add value to multiples. Comes through the Warp Speed race from last Wednesday here. He got back to near last in the run and did make up ground, but was never really a winning threat behind the Heathcoate runner. Does have a good record at the distance range and did win fifth up last prep.
Race 2. (13:48) Sky Racing Hcp (c6) 1400m
Think it’s all about 4 Hard Labour (Bet Now: $2.40) here. Looks, ability wise, the best horse in the race, and the one with the most upside and progression. Has been kept on ice since winning impressively over 1350m at Doomben to make it 4/5 in her career. The form around her is very suspect, but all you can do is win and that’s what she has done.
1 Baroda (Bet Now: $3.40) has a touch of quality and class about her. Team Edmonds trained mare that was backed late to win when resuming on her home track at the Gold Coast and under a lovely ride from Michael Cahill, she was too good. 2/2 second up record and given her record, don’t think she’s too badly in at the weights.
5 Lashoni (Bet Now: $7.50) is hit and miss but her best would see her run well here. Unwanted late in betting when racing at Doomben just over two weeks ago but it mattered not to her, because she absolutely bolted up and was most impressive, running solid enough time relative to the meeting. Knockout chance for sure.
Race 3. (14:23) Tab City To Surf Plate 1600m
3 Black Bolt (Bet Now: $4.00) is flying this time in for the Maher/Eustace team and is going to take some beating here. Is 2/2 this prep, the latest coming at Newcastle over 1400m two weeks ago when sitting back off the speed before peeling wider and unleashing a powerful finale to get up and win. Should have no trouble with the mile. Hard to beat.
4 Dzsenifer (Bet Now: $2.70) has done a good job this time in for Jack Duncan and is a threat. Toughed it out strongly to win two back at the Sunny Coast. Then raced over 1400m here when ridden a touch more conservatively and found the line okay, but was clearly no match for Palladas. Think the mile suits and she does have upside to come I feel.
Back to the mile I do like for 6 Petunia (Bet Now: $26.00). Ran in the 1800m race here two weeks ago won by Good Soize. She just didn’t run the trip out strongly enough after getting an economical run out the run. Run prior at the Gold Coast suggested she wanted more ground, but perhaps not to the extent of 1800m, so think the mile suits.
Race 4. (15:02) Magic Millions B.j. Mclachlan 1200m
With the confirmation 1 Shaquero (Bet Now: $2.10) is running here, I’m comfortably with him. Hasn’t raced since the Breeders Plate where he was a real professional from near the speed and much too good for his rivals. Spelled with the Magic Millions as a prime focus, he’s trialled well leading in, gate one…and really, as a whole, this race is a bit on the thin side. Black figures is more than acceptable.
2 Ghostwriter (Bet Now: $8.50) looks a leading contender here. Annabel Neasham trained colt that is on the Magic Millions path. Freshened up after a solid enough effort in the Golden Gift, with the wet track somewhat hindering his chances. Liked the recent Canterbury trial and stable is just low flying at the moment. Hard to beat.
8 Lovin’ Feelin (Bet Now: $26.00) looks good value. Has the Maher/Eustace polish and interesting that the stable didn’t accept with Fake Love and instead go with this filly, who finished several lengths behind them in the Calaway Gal but thought she was an eye catcher in her first run in a few weeks. Gets Michael Rodd steering and is racing like 1200m will be ideal.
Race 5. (15:42) New Year's Eve At E. Farm (c3) 1200m
2 Shooting For Gold (Bet Now: $1.70) is three weeks between runs for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp since taking out the Winning Rupert at Doomben, getting narrow splits late and driving through to win. The time was ordinary compared to the Mode Plate on the same day, but he is a horse with upside and progression and in the right stable for that set up to keep improving.
Think back to 1200m will suit 6 Good Chat (Bet Now: $5.00) for the David Vandyke stable. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago and just thought the seven furlongs at this stage of his career found him out when fifth to Palladas. Better suited here and draws to get a lovely run just off the speed. Just depends what upside is left.
Both career wins for 3 Minted (Bet Now: $16.00) have come second up. Now with Kacy Fogden and had his first run for the stable at Doomben just over a fortnight back. Got back in the run and looked to be trucking up nicely but as soon as pressure was applied, he flattened out. He’ll come on from that and his from when he raced in NSW does read well.
Race 6. (16:22) Grand Prix Stakes 2200m
It’s hard to get away from 1 The Elanora (Bet Now: $2.25). Chris Waller trained three year old that comes to Brisbane off the back of a couple of sharp wins in NSW, the latest being three weeks ago at Rosehill where J Mac landed him in the 1/1 after a few hundred metres and from that point on, it was race over. He’ll eat up the trip, gets Bossy…hard to find a negative.
11 See Marie (Bet Now: $5.50) looks like she will love the rise in trip. Desleigh Forster trained filly that ran over 1800m here two weeks ago and while Jim Byrne is riding in great form, this steer wasn’t his best. Just got badly held up on this filly and I think with a clear path, she wins the race instead of a luckless third. Out to a staying trip, think she’s hard to beat.
3 Toscanini (Bet Now: $9.00) looks like he will eat up a staying trip for the Maher/Eustace camp. Put together a couple of sharp wins to start the prep before racing at Rosehill three weeks ago and I had no idea what went on with him. He lost the plot at the start and looked disinterested. Picked up late and was the eye catcher behind Ellsberg. Earlier more intent this time around and he can take this out.
Race 7. (17:02) M. Millions Bernborough Plate 1600m
8 Profit… (Bet Now: $6.00) is he a contender or pretender? I was red hot on him winning The Gateway two weeks ago but he just didn’t have the change up speed to win and had to settle for a third, and I’d say a disappointing third, to Master Jamie. Hard fit now, up to the mile…he is well and truly getting towards last chance territory.
4 The Harrovian… (Bet Now: $2.00) nobody would begrudge him continuing his winning ways. Several weeks between wins since winning again and continuing the picket fence when strong to the line and winning the Recognition. Good test here up to the mile against some quality types, but how can you ignore what he’s doing.
Think a rise to the mile is ideal for the David Vandyke trained mare 7 Baccarat Baby (Bet Now: $9.00). Ran over 1300m two weeks ago in the Just Now where she had a good run in transit just behind the speed and tried hard. Finished within a couple of lengths of surprise winner Alison Of Tuffy. Just looks like a mare that wants more ground and she gets it here.
Race 8. (17:42) Magic Millions Falvelon Qlty 1200m
This race just looks to set up perfect for 3 Tactical Advantage (Bet Now: $9.00) and I think double figures is a great price in early betting. He should have won the Razor Sharp two weeks ago. Just had no luck at a vital stage in the straight when J Mac wanted to get clear when third to Athiri. He’s back on track I feel and he’ll be strong late here off a good speed.
4 Isaurian (Bet Now: $4.40) is a beauty for James Cummings and he is easy to draw to given his first up record of 5/5. Hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Sprint when second to Madam Rouge and I dare say that is the path he will head towards. Has been given a good ground via trials to get ready and I just keep coming back to the first up record.
There’s nothing really at a big price I can entertain as a threat, so not a long shot as such in including 2 Special Reward (Bet Now: $5.00), who hasn’t raced since The Hunter when on speed and kicking on strongly to run second to Sweet Deal. That’s A1 form for this kind of race, the tick over trial was good and does save his best for 1200m.
Race 9. (18:25) Thank You Brc Members Hcp (c6) 1400m
Third up, hard fit now, bigger track…struggling to find a negative for 1 Baller (Bet Now: $4.50), who has been excellent in two runs for Chris Waller. Resumed over 1110m and was a real eye catcher late behind Boomtown Lass. Then stepped up to 1200m where he was left totally flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and surged hard late to just miss out on picking up Racecourse Road, who dominated from the front. If he’s within range 400m out, he’s too good.
2 Stampe (Bet Now: $8.50) looks back on track for Chris Munce and is hard to beat here. Comes through The Gateway where he had good specking at odds. Had the perfect sit behind the speed and loomed to win. Just had to settle for a narrow second to Master Jamie, but was very good in defeat. Off that run, has to be a leading chance.
10 Roman Aureus (Bet Now: $8.00) deserves another chance. Brian Wakefield trained gelding that resumed over 1200m here two weeks ago when back in the run and while he was held up for a brief period, did expect him to finish the race off better. He is a second up winner and is better suited up in trip, so giving him another chance.
