A strong nine race card has been set down for Ascot on Saturday for WA Oaks Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:22) AMELIA PARK PLATE 1000m
2 Pot Shot (Bet Now: $5.50) is a stablemate of Revitup that is second up here. Resumed three weeks ago in the Supremacy and bumped into the likely Karrakatta winner, Amelia’s Jewel, finishing fourth. That is the A1 2YO form in WA, so with the run under the belt, she commands respect.
4 Swear To God (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Playing God colt on debut for Russell Stewart and I think he’s a key threat. He’s had two trials this time in to get ready for start one, placing in a 400m trial at Lark Hill before a dominant trial win over 1000m at Belmont last week. Maps well, thin depth, hard to beat.
3 California Rising (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Playing God for Neville Parnham that is on debut. He’s had a couple of trials to get ready for start one, the latest being over 1000m at Belmont where he was pushed out but didn’t mind the way he found the line. Gate one keeps him in the mix.
Race 2. (13:02) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED HCP 1000m
In the corner of 4 Leica Jaguar (Bet Now: $4.80) for Neville Parnham. Ran over 1100m here two weeks ago and I thought with a clear path in the straight, he wins instead of a close up fourth to Silkinize. I think he’s back on track now and despite back to 1000m, he’ll take beating.
5 Snipillicious (Bet Now: $4.00) is a son of Snippetson for Adam Durrant that resumes. He hasn’t raced since September 18 when a narrow but strong winner at Belmont over 1000m. Two trials to get ready have been sharp and overall, I think he does find a very winnable race.
6 Premium Choice (Bet Now: $7.00) hasn’t done much wrong in a four start career. All three runs this time in have come at Esperance Bay, winning two back before a solid third after spotting them a decent start. 1100m back to 1000m I find interesting but I think he has the talent.
Race 3. (13:42) CITY OF BELMONT HCP 1200M
6 Critical Altitude (Bet Now: $6.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but will put herself on speed and give herself every chance. Just under two weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance where she tried her guts out from near the front but couldn’t quite finish it off. She’ll give a bold sight.
1 Alien From Mars (Bet Now: $4.40) has returned in pretty good order. Lovely ride from Parnham saw her win here two weeks ago, driving hard late between runners and was impressive on the line. Tricky draw to overcome, but she meets similar depth and should be around the mark.
5 Lord Augustus (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing pretty well this time in. Tick over two weeks between runs since winning over 1100m here, getting the suck run behind the speed and finishing best in a driving go. The 1200m is a little query with him but should get a suck run from the inside gate.
Race 4. (14:22) SCHWEPPES HCP 1600M
1 Playing Marika (Bet Now: $12.00) brings a clear class edge and I think that just about gets her home. Quality mare that resumes, having not raced since the La Trice over 1800m when a game second to Beret. Not really a noted first performer, but her trials have been great and even with the weight, I think her class alone gets her across the line.
5 Big Bada Boom (Bet Now: $5.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it. Dominant win here last Saturday, aided by a ripping steer from Rawiller, who remains on for this weekend. Jury was out on this horse, but now he has found positive form, I think he can hold it.
4 Tinsnip (Bet Now: $16.00) comes through the Big Bada Boom race mentioned above. I thought the ride was 12/10. The horse has got quite keen in recent runs, so Watson let him roll on speed and he looked the winner but the last 150m he just fell in a hole and tired late. If he can lead and get a cheap furlong, he’ll take catching.
Race 5. (15:00) HEINEKEN 3 HCP 1400M
I’m not sure if gate one is ideal for 4 Phoneme (Bet Now: $5.00) but he’s the most consistent animal in the race and does map super. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago and tried his guts out from off the pace. Just couldn’t quite get the job done when a narrow second to Bragwell. I’d prefer him sitting wide with cover and launching late, but should lob into the box seat here and prove hard to hold out.
1 Lipstick Flickers (Bet Now: $2.80) brings a little bit of a class edge here. Just depends on her at 1400m. Been a little while since she has raced at the trip, but she brings the best form lines, her latest run being a fortnight back when a narrow second to Mood Swings. That reads well for this.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 10 Point Taken (Bet Now: $26.00). Jim Taylor trained mare that resumed over 1200m here where she paraded like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out behind Alien From Mars. Much better suited at 1400m and can run well second up.
Race 6. (15:37) CROWN PERTH HCP 1200M
1200m is the unknown with 2 Panzdown (Bet Now: $2.90) but two big ticks are gate one and a claim for Holly Watson. I thought his run two weeks ago behind Acromantula had plenty of merit. That horse got a cheap lead, had a pull in the weights and darted on the turn to set up what ended up being a winning break. Panzdown stuck on well for second, but he maps to get the box seat and he has the turn of foot.
8 Buzzoom (Bet Now: $3.50) is a quality filly for Dan Morton that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since the WA Guineas during the Carnival when down the track but far from disgraced in defeat behind Treasured Star. Interesting she resumes without a trial, but she has class and brilliance.
3 Watch Me Dance (Bet Now: $21.00) is first up here for Steve Wolfe and I find her a fascinating runner. She was a highly rated horse once upon a time but the last 6-12 months, her form has tapered right off. Been given a good break and I thought she looked sharp in an Albany trial win, so watch the market.
Race 7. (16:12) MELVISTA STAKES 2200M
10 Alaskan God (Bet Now: $3.00) is unknown at 2200m, but he’s racing like he will eat it up. He doesn’t come through the traditional lead ups but he has been winning lesser races and the big tick is that each of the wins, he has beaten the older horses. That holds him in good stead for this.
2 Rokanori… (Bet Now: $5.00) beware the unbeaten horse. 3/3 to start his career, the latest win being two weeks ago in the JC Roberts when proving too good for Trix Of The Trade. He is racing like 2200m will be fine and the best form, traditionally, is the Stakes form, so he’s clearly in the mix.
12 Lautre (Bet Now: $61.00) is a Brett Pope trained three year old that also brings weaker form on paper leading into this but he has been winning and much like Alaskan God, has been beating up older horses, which I always like. Last couple have come at 1800m so the rise to 2200m should be okay.
Race 8. (16:50) WA OAKS 2400M
I’m happy to speck 10 Arcadia Gem (Bet Now: $8.50) each way. I dare say Chris Parnham could have jumped off her for something else, but the fact he sticks with her is good enough for me. That, and I thought she was a hidden run in the Natasha. It was essentially a sit/sprint, and she just wasn’t suited. But on the replay, through the line about 200m after, she’s in front of the entire field, so 2400m I think is ideal and you’re getting an each way price.
If this becomes another sit/sprint like the Natasha then 1 Constant Dreaming (Bet Now: $1.60) wins again. Dominated them in the 1000 Guineas before being ridden a treat on speed in the Natasha and her class got her home. Classy may well get her home again, but a query at 2400m and being odds on, she’s too short to be a betting proposition.
5 Private Scene (Bet Now: $21.00) should be fine at 2400m. She was quite one paced in the Natasha but she kept on and was a definite pass mark I thought behind Constant Dreaming. I don’t think she is good enough to turn the tables but I think she is a must for wider multiples.
Race 9. (17:30) BELMONT CITY OF OPPORTUNITY HCP 1600M
6 Catalpa (Bet Now: $2.05) on top. Grant Williams trained gelding that was a dominant winner over 1400m here just over two weeks ago when on speed under Paul Harvey and once he pushed the button, away he went and he was dominant. He’s returned in excellent order and up to the mile, he’ll take beating.
3 General Grant (Bet Now: $4.80) is knocking on the door to win one. Just looked in need of the run fresh behind Spirited Session before stepping up to 1500m and just missing out on the win when second to Native Chimes. Proven at 1600m+ and should have upside to come.
4 Indominus (Bet Now: $26.00) should welcome the drop back in grade/depth. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when down the track behind Crescent City, who would be near favourite in a race like this. Draws to get a suck run, I’d include in wider multiples.
