Nine races have been set down for Belmont this Saturday where it is Strickland Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:58) FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK 2YO 1200m
13 Vogue’s Choice (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to have trialled up very well so I’ll go her way at start one. This filly debuts for Hayden Ballantyne and has looked the part each time she has stepped out. Gets a soft draw for her first start, has gate speed and to my eye has had a decent enough grounding for 1200m.
2 Toppa The Mountain (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Sessions for Dan Morton that resumes. This youngster had a three run prep in the Summer to start his career and did win at start two, so he’s a proven city performer. Has trialled well leading in and gets Chris Parnham to steer.
10 Amelia’s Picante (Bet Now: $41.00) is a Darren Taylor trained filly that resumes and could be dangerous. Hasn’t exactly fired a shot in her short career to date but she has trialled well pretty much every trial. Just hasn’t translated it to race day, so I’d watch the market with her.
Race 2. (14:37) TABTOUCH WSPEED PLATINUM-RS0MW 1200m
8 Snippy Miss (Bet Now: $4.80) is flying for Adam Durrant without winning. Ran over 1000m here last twos weeks ago and worked to the line strongly when a close up second. Was coming back from 1200m that day so I think a rise back up in trip will suit and is very much deserving of a win.
4 Mr Mt Walker (Bet Now: $13.00) has returned in good order for the Steve Wolfe camp and is hard to beat. Admittedly got a soft time of it in front at Pinjarra last start but that aside, he was impressive the way he put them away. Harder here, but has the racing pattern to give himself every chance.
12 I’m Icey (Bet Now: $18.00) is on the seven day back up for Neville Parnham after racing here last Saturday where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a good kick despite the solid tempo. Just felt the pinch late behind the in form I’m Pretty. Lands on speed and will run a bold race.
Race 3. (15:17) JANE CARR 50TH BIRTHDAY-RS1MW 1600m
The weight is a knock with 1 Aberdeen Queen (Bet Now: $2.50), but she is a mare who has a touch of quality and I think the big key to her is drawing an inside gate. She was good in defeat two weeks ago here when back near last in a slowly run race and was strong late off the moderate tempo. Can sit closer in the run from the draw and be strong at the end.
Unusual that Team Williams throws one in the deep end like they are doing with 9 Crescent City (Bet Now: $4.20), so respecting the fact they are running this three year old here. He lobbed into a dream spot at Northam and once he got the split, away he went and he was strong. Think the rise to the mile suits and Pike sticks.
6 Cape Reign (Bet Now: $34.00) is a progressive animal for the Martin Allan camp that resumed with quite a strong win at Pinjarra. Sat wide with cover before easing to clear air and unleashing a powerful finishing burst to get the job done. Harder here, but confident he can measure up.
Race 4. (15:53) VALE PAUL STILLITANO (BM62+) 1000m
7 Secret Plan (Bet Now: $2.40) is a talented son of I Am Invincible for Team Williams that resumes. This three year old hasn’t raced since March 13 at Ascot when a strong closing second to Universal Pleasure. Trial win indicates he’s come back in good order and is ready to go fresh.
Back to her own age is a big tick for 1 Madam Torio (Bet Now: $16.00). Thrown in the deep end when taking on some seasoned campaigners two weeks ago, leading at a very strong speed and just tired late. Tongue tie goes on and though drawn wide, she has listening early speed.
10 Pink Carats (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Simon Miller trained three year old that comes to town off the back of a maiden win at Pinjarra down the straight when on speed and kicked strongly when asked to get the job done. This is a harder assignment but Blinkers first time signals intent.
Race 5. (16:43) AMELIA PARK (BM78+) 1000m
The market will be the guide but I suspect it will be a fan of 3 Ambiente (Bet Now: $14.00). She resumes and why I think the market will like her is because she is a talented sprinter, Pike steers and the big lead is the the Bar Plates and Pads are off, so reading between the lines, her feet are good and the trials indicate she’s flying.
4 Miss Conteki (Bet Now: $1.85) is an absolute beauty for Simon Miller that resumes off a mini freshen up where she put together an impressive sequence of wins with electric finales from off the speed. She will concede a start but she will be strong at the end, and she’s a winner.
1 Gemma’s Son (Bet Now: $4.40) is a David Harrison trained three year old that comes here off a break, his latest run coming on May 1 when third to Miss Conteki. Interesting he has had a mini break, but is near the speed and gets in pretty well after the claim. Hard to beat in a race like this.
Race 6. (17:20) PENINSULA DINING ROOM (RS1MW) 1300m
I’ll take a chance with 7 The Great One (Bet Now: $19.00), a former Peter Gelagotis runner that is making his WA debut for Steve Wolfe. Showed good promise when racing in Victoria so interesting he lands here, but did look sharp in a recent trial win, so I’d watch the market. If there is a push, follow with confidence.
16 Time Scale (Bet Now: $16.00) is unknown at 1300m but she is a filly who is racing like she will appreciate it. Her late splits have been quite strong in recent runs over shorter trips, suggesting a rise in trip will suit her. If she can get luck from the tricky gate, she will take some beating.
11 Island Missile (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Team Gangemi trained gelding that has done a solid job since joining the camp and back up to 1300m on firmer footing, he appeals. Was 1300m back to 1200m when racing here a fortnight back when back off the speed and took a while to get into his work but his last 100m was good. Hard to beat I suggest.
Race 7. (17:55) CROWN PERTH (BM72+) 2200m
Going the way of 10 Born To Try (Bet Now: $4.40) for the Lindsey Smith camp. This mare ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when back near last in the run and working home strongly late behind Black Shadow. Gets in really well after the claim and if she sits closer in the run, she will take a power of beating.
5 Black Shadow (Bet Now: $7.00) is a beauty for Jim Taylor that was rewarded with consistency with a win a fortnight back when near the speed and proving strong at the end in getting the job done. Can he go on with it? I don’t see why not, and this is a similar race to what he ran in last time.
7 All Man (Bet Now: $67.00) has upside/progression and can figure in the finish at odds. He ran behind Black Shadow two weeks back. Got off the speed and was one paced when asked, but stayed on and was sound in defeat. He is racing well and a win wouldn’t entirely shock at all.
Race 8. (18:25) BREAST CANCER WA STRICKLAND 2000m
9 Leading Girl (Bet Now: $2.80) looks to pick herself. Talented mare for Team Williams that ran in the Hyperion and I thought her effort was super given she was a mile off them in the run and held up at times but loved the way she closed off. She will eat up 2000m and has more upside than most.
8 Dance Music (Bet Now: $5.50) is yet to prove herself at 2000m but she is a mare in form who will be out of trouble on speed. Attempted to lead throughout in the Hyperion and was brave when outgunned late by Valour Road. If she gets a cheap lead, she will take catching from the front and giving a bold sight.
This run would surely go close to determining whether 7 Kay Cee (Bet Now: $12.00) presses on for next season. She has been ordinary since her 3YO season but to be fair to her, she wasn’t beaten far in the Hyperion, second up off a decent break. Getting towards peak fitness and is suited at 2000m.
Race 9. (18:55) FURPHY (BM66+) 1400m
She let me down badly three weeks ago but going to butter up with 10 Bright Diamond (Bet Now: $2.20). I thought she had every chance under Pike but didn’t finish the race off and was plain when third. Form out of the race has been franked…perhaps with a more conservative steer, she will be far more effective.
6 Lonsdale Lady (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented mare for Kieran McDonagh that resumes. This mare ran during the Summer Carnival in the feature Mares races and ran okay without winning. Been given a good break, has trialled well and 1400m fresh tells me she’s ready to go.
7 No Surrender (Bet Now: $12.00) can definitely bounce back. Talented three year old who finished down the track in the Raconteur when on speed and feeling the pinch late. Better suited at this level and if he lands near the front without doing too much work, he will be effective.
