A strong card of racing has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday, where we will see the Previews for the Blue Diamond as well as the John Dillon Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:00) Cape Grim Beef Plate 2000m
7 The Chairman, (Bet Now: $5.00) with normal luck, looks a near good thing to my eye. Thought his run last time out at Flemington behind Jacquinot Bay was outstanding given that horse absolutely crawled them in front and The Chairman was back and had to come wide. Looks beautifully set up to win here third up.
6 Pretty Punk (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare who is racing so well at the moment for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. She was confidently supported last time out over 2000m at Flemington and Williams got the best out of her to score a decisive victory. First look at Caulfield but the form around her back home in SA is stacking up nicely.
1 Master Of Arts (Bet Now: $14.00) comes through the Jacquinot Bay race at Flemington and I think he should be forgiven for his failure behind the greybeard. Just got too far back in a slowly run affair and for a horse who is looking for 2400m+, that just wasn’t his go. Will be interesting to see what he does here third up.
Race 2. (11:30) Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Preview (Boys) 1000m
2 Long Leaf (Bet Now: $3.50) on top for me in a really solid edition of the Preview. This fastnet Rock colt resumes for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Debuted with a superb win at Morphettville before going to the Merson Cooper at Sandown where he did everything right and that was the difference between winning and losing. I can’t find a recent jump out for him, but off what I’ve seen, he’s the pick of these.
1 Run Naan (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented son of Makfi that resumes for Tony McEvoy. This colt won two for two in the Spring, debuting with a win at Bendigo before going to the Maribyrnong Plate where he came with a well timed run to score. Jump outs at Flemington/Werribee have been quite pleasing and looks ready to go.
6 Bold Type (Bet Now: $11.00) is the big watch here. Gelding that resumes for John McArdle after a one run prep in the Spring where he finished down the track in the Maribyrnong Trial, a race which featured Sunlight. Flew in a Sandown jump out last week and the tongue tie goes on to relax. Reckon he’s being set to win here fresh.
Race 3. (12:00) Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) 1000m
Siding with 4 Oohood (Bet Now: $3.70). Daughter of I Am Invincible that resumes for Tony McEvoy after debuting in the Merson Cooper in the Spring where inexperience probably cost her the win when second to Long Leaf. Jump outs at Flemington/Werribee have been quite encouraging and she has the form on the board.
3 Lady Horseowner (Bet Now: $7.50) is a daughter of Equiano for the Greg Eurell team who landed some big bets when leading most of the way to win on debut at the Valley, beating Al Naifa, who bolted up at Sale on Sunday, so that form reads well, and she did look sharp in a recent Cranbourne jump out. Ready to go.
8 Inindeed (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Choisir filly on debut for the Aaron Purcell team. Good lead that she has been scratched from Friday night to instead tackle the harder option. Jump outs have been quite good and most importantly, she draws the inside gate, so she’ll have the rail to follow, a definite advantage in these juvenile contests.
Race 4. (12:30) Blue Diamond Gala Dinner Plate 1100m
3 Smart Coupe (Bet Now: $2.25) on top in what looks a really good race for the fillies. Ellerton/Zahra train this girl, who had a two run Spring prep, running third both times. Ran behind Sam’s Image over 1000m here fresh before a gutsy effort down the straight behind Jorda. Jump outs have been good and fresh at 1100m looks ideal.
2 Holy Seal (Bet Now: $3.20) is the race fit filly in the field and does have the best form line. Resumed with a gritty win at Sandown before racing there again and bumping into Nature Strip. Yet to race beyond 1000m, which is of some concern, but if there is to be an advantage to those near the speed, this girl comes right into play.
6 Kathy’s Spirit (Bet Now: $23.00) had no luck two back at Morphettville behind Flying Krupt before taking on the older horses under the lights at Cranbourne where Harry Coffey produced a sweet ride on the filly, saving ground nearer the inside in what was the winning move. Big step up here, but can never really ignore these Weir horses on the up.
Race 5. (13:00) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap 1400m
Confident that 7 Bellaria (Bet Now: $5.00) can measure up here and hold her own. Last two runs at Werribee have been excellent. Tragedy beaten two back when never clear of a pocket until it was too late. She then raced there again where she looked a good thing on paper and with some help from a lovely ride from Michael Poy, she chased hard to get the win. Tumbles in weight and should get a good speed in front of her.
5 Notio (Bet Now: $4.80) clearly on top. Team Hawkes trains this son of Duporth, who resumed over 1300m at Sandown and tried really hard when third to Sohool, who franked the form by winning at Flemington last Saturday. That does very well for a 70, he goes well second up and this is a very winnable race.
2 All Out Of Love (Bet Now: $15.00) is a handy four year old that resumes for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This horse will probably be better over further but his recent jump outs indicate he is forward enough to run well on the fresh side, he draws a soft gate and gets Cory Parish riding. Think he can run a bold race.
Race 6. (13:35) Michael McMahon Plate (84) 1400m
4 Sharing (Bet Now: $3.60) has come back in great order this time in for the Enver Jusufovic team and that was confirmed with a dominant win at Flemington a fortnight back. She was bolting with cover before Ben Allen gave her clear air and she exploded, winning with ease. Can only see upside with her and has to be rated highly.
7 Diapason (Bet Now: $6.00) comes through the Sharing race at Flemington a fortnight back and I thought her run was full of merit. She got a mile back in the run on a day where it was difficult to come from near last successfully. Did a great job to run fourth. That was only her third run back, so she should have room to improve.
3 Overstep (Bet Now: $7.00) is a bludger but gee she finds a very winnable race here with her best form. Race three weeks back at Randwick and just got too far back behind Siren’s Fury in a disappointing effort. Tends to save her best for Melbourne and a recent jump out was very encouraging. Looks to have settled in well.
Race 7. (14:10) Ladbrokes Info Hub Handicap (78) 1400m
2 Indian Thunder (Bet Now: $5.00) on top for me. Darren Weir trains this colt, who took on the four year olds over the 1400m at Flemington on New Years Day and I thought he did a really good job in defeat behind Wise Hero. Market support said he’d go close but the tempo and the fact he was in the gates for a long time didn’t help his cause. Confident he can bounce back.
1 Onehundred Percent (Bet Now: $4.40) will love getting back around a bend and up to 1400m. Just think he found the straight/1100m a bit sharp in the Inglis Dash but was far from disgraced behind Nature Strip. That’s the A1 form in Melbourne right now, and have to respect the fact he is on the quick turnaround.
8 Kedleston (Bet Now: $16.00) had been teasing to win a race for a long time but it finally came at start 12 when producing a lovely finale from off the pace to win at Yarra Valley. That was over 1200m, a distance short of his best IMHO, so I think up to 1400m is ideal and he did run well in town last prep. Knockout chance now his confidence is up.
Race 8. (14:45) John Dillon Stakes 1400m
Going to take a punt on 4 Royal Rapture (Bet Now: $12.00) being ready to go fresh. Veteran galloper for Darren Weir who is first up here off a Winter prep where he raced well for the most part without winning. Dodged the Spring and has been given a really good break. Jump outs have been good and 1400m first up tells me there is intent to run well.
2 Tshahitsi (Bet Now: $4.20) is an absolute beauty for the Cook/Miller team from Tassie. Lost no admirers first up in the Standish with a close up fourth to Lord Of The Sky down the straight, which probably didn’t suit, nor did the tempo. He is a dynamite second up horse, he maps super and is tough, who doesn’t mind digging in.
9 Pure Pride (Bet Now: $11.00) is a really good mare for the Murray Johnson yard who should be forgiven for her down the track effort in the Chseter Manifold behind Burning Front. They absolutely crawled in that race and given she was out the back, she had no hope of making ground. First look at Caulfield, but she is certainly good enough to threaten. Just needs things to fall into place.
Race 9. (15:20) Ladbrokes Handicap 1700m
2 Jacquinot Bay (Bet Now: $5.00) is just an absolute beauty for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Extra Zero has passed the baton on to this horse and he is absolutely flying and got a well deserved win on the board a fortnight back over the 1800m at Flemington, albeit it was handed to him on a platter as Cory Parish really stacked them up in front and dashed the final 400m. Won’t get it as easy here, but racing too well to ignore.
4 Morton’s Fork (Bet Now: $2.70) is a bludger, but to be fair, so are most of these. I think with a better ride, he beats Dreamforce last time out over the Randwick mile, and that horse is the form galloper in Sydney at the moment. Finds a winnable race, draws well, gets Williams…can see him winning. But couldn’t back him.
8 Plot The Course (Bet Now: $7.50) has come back really for Michael Trotter. Both runs this time in have been behind Widgee Turf, firstly at the Valley before racing here at the mile when a game third despite wanting to duck in. Third up now, he should be hard fit, ready to go and up to 1700m should be no issue.
