Group l racing continues at Ascot this Saturday where it is Winterbottom Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Winterbottom Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Winterbottom Stakes
Race 1. (15:05) Tourism WA Trophy 1000m
1 The Front Bar (Bet Now: $1.75) is a beauty for Adam Durrant. Yet to really put a foot wrong in her seven start career, winning first up against her own age, then producing the good under Pike to win two weeks ago, beating the older horses in impressive fashion. Back to her own age, she clearly appeals.
4 Bopping Blue (Bet Now: $13.00) comes here three weeks between runs for Adam Durrant since taking on the older horses at this track/distance and while held, he didn’t disgrace himself at all behind a handy one, Tajmali. Back to his own age, he commands respect.
3 Beads (Bet Now: $16.00) is a first four prospect. Resumed behind The Front Bar two weeks back and seemingly had his chance but battled away pretty well in defeat. Did show good promise when last in work so definitely has the talent. Needs to improve but no reason why he can’t.
Race 2. (15:45) Mrs Mac's Handicap (78+) 1600m
Pretty keen here on 2 Cockney Crew (Bet Now: $3.80). Kieran McDonagh trained gelding that resumed two weeks ago in the RJ Peters. Attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow third to Kissonallforcheeks. Better for the run, he’ll take beating.
7 Money Maher (Bet Now: $5.00) is a staying gelding for the Pearce camp that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since Boxing Day last year when down the track behind Neufbosc, who went on to win the Perth Cup. Trial was good and he can pull out a positive run fresh, so watch the market.
6 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $15.00), I dare say, has eyes on the Perth Cup. Has been freshened up since a down the track effort in the Kalgoorlie Cup in early October. Better over further but does like racing here, so he’s in with a shout as a first four contender.
Race 3. (16:25) Drummond Golf Handicap (78+) 1200m
It’s unfortunate that 6 Triple Missile (Bet Now: $2.90) is first emergency for the Winterbottom because I do think he’d measure up in that race. Instead, he likely runs here. He was very good behind Wilchino two weeks ago after being set a big task. He will look the winner if he’s within range.
9 Secret Plan (Bet Now: 41.00) has done little wrong in his ten start career for Team Williams. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago and was very good from off the speed when second to impressive winner Wilchino, who I like in the Winterbottom. That race rated through the roof, so I think Secret Plan has to be one of the hardest to beat here.
2 Plutocracy (Bet Now: $17.00) has been solid in two runs back from a break for Simon Miller. Far from disgraced fresh when fourth to Wilchino. Then went to the Colonel Reeves and was outclassed behind Elite Street. Much better suited here and can bounce back.
Race 4. (17:05) Westspeed Platinum Series Final 1400m
2 Nowhiteflag (Bet Now: $2.00) does seem a lead or bust type. First up, he led, bolted up and was brilliant. Then two weeks ago, he missed the start, got very keen in the run and tired late. First 100m is crucial. If he can jump clean and find the lead, he’ll take beating here.
3 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $16.00) has a good second up record and Chris Parnham does get on well with him. Resumed here two weeks ago where he had a suck run behind the speed and tried hard, but first up, condition just gave way. Better for the run, he can take this out.
11 Classic Rogue (Bet Now: $21.00) can be dangerous here for Steve Wolfe. Ran third in the Apple Schnapps race two weeks back and was good in defeat after dragging back fro, the wide gate. Draws much better, can sit closer in the run and be quite dangerous I feel.
Race 5. (17:45) Crown Towers Handicap (1MW) 1400m
3 God Has Chosen (Bet Now: $1.65) does look the standout. If you were on his back last Saturday, apologies for bringing up the nightmare. Should have won, but didn’t have a clear path in the straight and couldn’t get a chance to build up proper momentum. Better luck this time around and he should be winning.
2 The Fugazi (Bet Now: $9.50) should be suited up to 1400m for the Gangemi team. Ran over 1200m here three weeks ago when dragged back to near last from the wide gate and just couldn’t get involved, but very late was warming to the task, suggesting a rise in trip suits, and this is clearly an easier race, taking out God Has Chosen. The only real threat.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 6 Fairy Fast (Bet Now: $26.00). Resumed over 1200m here where it looked like she would need the run and that’s how it panned out. She is a second up winner, has more upside than most and gets in well after the claim.
Race 6. (18:25) Regional Championship Final 1200m
10 Significant Hero (Bet Now: $4.20) has done a really good job since relocating to Geraldton and I think can take this out. His racing pattern isn’t the best but he does have a very good finale on him and with good speed in front, he should get his chance to launch over the top of this lot.
5 Devine Beast (Bet Now: $10.00) is the proven performer at metro level and commands respect here. Peter Fernie trained mare that is several weeks between runs since racing on her home track at Kalgoorlie when well backed and did make up ground without threatening. Proven city performer, she is respected here.
12 Copping Points (Bet Now: $17.00) has to rise a fair bit in depth here, but he’s in the right camp to improve. Steve Wolfe trained gelding that earned his way into the race via a narrow all the way win at Albany where he was there to be beaten but found under pressure and was good. He will give cheek from near the front.
Race 7. (19:05) JRA Trophy 2100m
Hard to get away from 4 Midnight Blue (Bet Now: $1.85). Peach from Pike helped, but even allowing for that, he was dominant two weeks ago in the Ascot Gold Cup over 1800m here, stamping himself as one of the top seeds for the Perth Cup. Up in the weights, but up in trip offsets that and he’s taking on similar horses from what he spanked last time.
6 Media Baron (Bet Now: $26.00) is sneaky flying I think for David Harrison. Wasn’t a bad run from this guy behind Midnight Blue in the Ascot Gold Cup, enough for the stable to accept last Saturday in the Railway where he was the emergency and didn’t gain a start. Up to 2100m I do like and he’ll be strong late.
9 Poulton Le Sands (Bet Now: $26.00) is getting better and better with each run. Whether he’s good enough for a Perth Cup, I doubt it, but he’s in with a shout here off the back of a good finale in the Ascot Gold Cup. He gets to a more suitable trip now and will be dangerous if he can sit closer in the run.
Race 8. (19:45) Winterbottom Stakes 1200m
I just keep coming back to 16 Wilchino (Bet Now: $3.80). This is clearly a step up in grade/depth for her but she keeps winning and she keeps running really fast time, including two weeks ago at this track/distance. She needed a soft gate to be a realistic chance and voila, gate one. She’ll do me.
2 Elite Street (Bet Now: $2.30) is the one they have to beat. He’s been dominant in the traditional lead ups to this race. To the eye, he has been dominant, but the clock says he does need to improve a touch. To me, it’s Elite Street or different form.
1 Rock Magic (Bet Now: $34.00) is a greybeard who is an absolute beauty and should be around the mark. He had his chance behind Elite Street last time out and battled away okay. I highly doubt he’s good enough to win, but I think he’s racing well enough for a first four finish.
Race 9. (20:20) Heineken 3 Handicap (72+) 1400m
6 Beret (Bet Now: $3.90) is a hard mare to follow and trust with confidence but now she has that winning feeling, she can continue it. Lovely front running ride I thought from CJP two weeks ago at this track/distance, having total control in front and giving nothing else a look in. Interesting to see what they do here, whether they lead or opt for cover. Whatever the set up, she’ll take beating.
Fresh does seem best for 4 Bogart (Bet Now: $6.50) so being first up here, he does command respect. Adam Durrant trained gelding that hasn’t raced since April 10 when far from disgraced at this track/distance behind That’s Funny Az. Two trials to get ready, hard to beat with luck from the tricky gate.
1 Lorentinio (Bet Now: $5.50) will put himself on speed and look to give his all. That was the case three weeks ago and he gave a strong kick from the front. Just couldn’t quite finish it off and felt the pinch late behind Comfort Me, who ran second in the Railway behind a star, Western Empire, so that just reads so well for this, and back to 1400m a big tick.
