A bumper nine race card has been assembled for Caulfield on Saturday where it is Zipping Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Zipping Classic 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Zipping Classic
Race 1. (12:35) Merson Cooper Stks 1000m
She’ll need luck from a tricky gate, but I like the look of 6 Ebhaar (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) in the opener. Team Snowden filly that trialled over 1045m at Randwick and won the trial in good style, good time as well. Two winners have come from the trial, which is a positive sign, and stable finds Olly to steer. Tricky race, but she’ll do me.
1 Brereton (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is the safe option. He seems a pretty bomb proof juvenile and what has impressed me about him is the way he digs in when challenged. He has shown that in both runs. Narrowly beaten on debut before really ticker shown when winning at Flemington. Hard to beat.
2 Valenconi (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) is the other runner with race experience on his side, along with Brereton. He debuted at Cranbourne on that bottomless track and made up okay ground without really threatening. That was a very testing track so either he’s bounced off it and is ready to go, or will sook it up. Market will be the guide.
Race 2. (13:10) Sandown Cup 3200m
It’s probably a good thing that 2 True Marvel (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is French bred. If he was Australian/Kiwi bred, he would be going to the Jericho Cup and be a genuine $1.20 chance. He instead comes here off the back of an absolute spank job of his rivals over 3800m at the Valley in a Jericho Qualifier. Two miles will be fine, he’s hard fit, in form…certainly likeable.
4 Accountability (Bet Now: $2.60 TOP ODDS) is racing like he will eat up the two miles. Chris Waller trained stayer that ran in the 2800m race on Cup Day and stayed on strongly from off the speed when second to Team Captain. The two miles should be no issue for him and while he’s been up forever it seems, he’s maintaining his form.
5 Monmouth (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) wasn’t too bad in this race last year so I don’t think the two miles will be an excuse. He ran over 2500m at Cranbourne last time and battled on well enough in defeat behind Mankayan. Not sure I could back him to win, but one for multiples.
Race 3. (13:45) Twilight Glow Stks 1400m
1 Decent Raine (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) for me. On the quick back up from winning the Stockade at Ballarat on Saturday, which on paper looked an average race, but she was an impressive winner, showing good change up speed, and the race rated very well for the meeting. Back to her own age/sex, despite a tricky gate, she’s the one to beat.
2 Star Of Chaos (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) looks hard to beat for the McEvoy camp. Put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce before racing at Flemington on Oaks Day when on speed and she tried, but was clearly no match for a star in Espiona. That is A1 3YO Filly form, so she has to be respected here.
6 Lavish Girl (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited back to her own sex. She took on the boys at Flemington three weeks back and was far from disgraced I thought behind Bend The Knee in a pretty solid effort. She was six or so weeks between runs there, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
Race 4. (14:20) Doveton Stakes 1000m
3 Varda (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is bursting to win a race for James Cummings. Clear forgive run two back here before racing at Flemington on Oaks Day where she was a closing third from off the speed to surprise winner Halvorsen. Fast run short course races are her go in life so the set up here looks ideal.
13 Yulong Command (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) has done little wrong this time in for the Freedman camp. Narrow second fresh to Curran in a 955m at the Valley. Proved that was no one off with a dominant win in a 955m last start. He seems to be enjoying the short course racing so 1000m looks ideal.
6 Streetcar Stranger (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver here. David Jolly should always be respected when he brings them to Melbourne and he brings this sprinter across, who was plain first up, but did parade like he would need the run and that is how it panned out. Proven here and should be strong late.
Race 5. (15:00) Summoned Stakes 1600m
I think 4 Tricky Gal (Bet Now: $4.60) is the best on the program. This just looks such good placement by Matty Smith, a stable that is firing. Three runs back from a spell, resuming with a fast finishing second in the Nivison. Then had no luck in The Invitation before sitting on speed and sticking on okay behind Electric Girl. Drops a fair way in depth IMO, gets Olly, bit of juice in the track ideal and the big, big tick is getting to the mile. I think she just wins.
9 Steinem (Bet Now: $3.00) looks hard to beat. This mare is four weeks between runs since running in the Empire Rose where she spotted them way too much head start but loved the way she closed off behind Colette, which is A1 form for this. Just staying at the mile is the only issue.
3 Belle Plaisir (Bet Now: $20.00) is getting towards D-Day. Market wanted her at Cranbourne last time but not sure the race shape suited. That, and Currie was more interested in boxing in April Rain rather than winning the race. Think the mile is ideal, drop of rain throughout the week helps and she has upside to come.
Race 6. (15:40) Sandown Guineas 1600m
2 Port Louis (Bet Now: $4.40) needs gelding IMO to be a Group l horse. But you’d assume a win here and he’ll secure his manhood along with a life post racing at stud given how well bred he is. Was with him three weeks ago at Flemington and the way he was trucking in the straight, it looked a case of how far, but he hit the front and floated, nabbed late by Bend The Knee. If he has a bunny to chase this time around, I think he’ll be more effective.
6 Cardinal Gem (Bet Now: $5.50) has good upside to come and this does look a clear target race. He ran behind Bend The Knee at Flemington where he was only second up and warmed to the task nicely late for a horse that is clearly wanting more ground, which he gets here. Has to be respected.
3 Blushing Tycoon (Bet Now: $13.00) is going well for the Busuttin/Young camp and commands respect. Ran over 1800m on Cup Day at Flemington and found plenty under Nash, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Spirit Of Gaylard. Like a few engaged here, he seems a bit one paced, so a truly run mile should suit.
Race 7. (16:20) Zipping Classic 2400m
You’d think only bad luck beats 1 Spanish Mission (Bet Now: $1.55). The query is why are they running here after the Melbourne Cup. He must have pleased the stable since the race otherwise he’d be in the paddock. He was mighty in the Cup and all things equal, his class edge gets him home.
2 Warning (Bet Now: $5.00) has found a new lease on life…either that, or the horse just loves Nash. He has been on the horse the past two and the result has been two strong wins, the latest being the Queen Elizabeth three weeks ago at Flemington when leading throughout, with the ride clearly winning the race. Harder here, but he’s flying.
6 Dr Drill (Bet Now: $17.00) is racing really well at the moment for the Maher/Eustace camp. The query is obviously beyond 2000m because his last two, the Geelong Cup (2400m) and Queen Elizabeth (2600m), he has run well, but hasn’t attacked the line. He’ll run honestly again and is a must for exotics.
Race 8. (17:00) Eclipse Stakes 1800m
11 Excelman (Bet Now: $21.00) is rising a fair bit in grade/depth, but has enormous upside and comes here as a strong first up winner at Flemington on Cup Day in the Subzero. Lovely ride from McDougall helped him get the win and landed some good bets in the process. Like him up to 1800m and gets run of the race from the draw.
6 Our Playboy (Bet Now: $2.90) is flying for the Price/Kent team. Race shape meant he lost sight of the bunny in the Cranbourne Cup and did an excellent job from near last in the run when second to King Magnus. If that run hasn’t busted him, you’d think he’ll take beating here.
3 Hang Man (Bet Now: $35.00) can surprise here at odds. Down the track behind stablemate Buffalo River in the Moonga two back. Had a few weeks off and ran on Cup Day in a sit/sprint and wasn’t suited, but far from disgraced in defeat behind Milton Park. Fitter, he can bounce back.
Race 9. (17:40) Kevin Heffernan Stks 1400m
7 I Am Superman (Bet Now: $3.30) would love this track to dry right out. If it does, he is one of the hardest to beat. Little luck in the Classique Legend, seemingly bolting for clear air, but it just didn’t eventuate for him behind Eduardo. That looks A1 form for this, he looked sharp in a piece of work at Newcastle two weeks ago and has class.
1400m and getting away from the big boys should be ideal for 1 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $5.50). He ran in the Darley Sprint Classic and just found the class a bit rich behind Nature Strip in a race where they ran very sharp time. Gets to his pet trip, this looks his level, should land on speed and prove tough to get past.
Is 5 Crosshaven (Bet Now: $7.50) back? He hadn’t shown much for 12 months, but his run at Flemington three weeks back was good. Had a suck run behind the speed and was there to win, but couldn’t quite get past Age Of Chivalry. If he holds that form here, he should be around the mark.
