WA racing this Saturday heads to Ascot where their Autumn Carnival continues, headlined by the WA Oaks (2400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:14) CITY OF BELMONT HANDICAP 2200m
It’s hard to get away from 1 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $4.20). This guy is absolutely flying at the moment. Good late two back in the Bunbury Cup from the back, then proved it was no fluke with a strong win in the Autumn Cup in track record time. Even with the weight, he just has too much class on this lot to my eye.
6 Unreliable (Bet Now: $3.10) is in a purple patch and deserves a crack at Saturday level. Last couple of runs have resulted in strong wins at Pinjarra and Ascot respectively, the latter win coming at this trip at the midweeks and gee he was dominant late. He’s the one on the up and the only real threat to my eye.
2 Freez’emoff (Bet Now: $19.00) gets to a more suitable trip, but getting here so soon is the query. Two runs back from a break have come at Geraldton over 1200m and 1400m respectively, both runs looking he needed the hitout. Go back to the Summer, he was far from disgraced in those staying races en route to the Perth Cup, so we know his best is good enough.
Race 2. (15:54) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED HANDICAP 1200m
1 Lord Lonsdale (Bet Now: $2.50) is better suited over further, but I think he has a bit on these and class gets him home. Resumes for Kieran McDonagh after a pretty good Spring prep, where he won two of three, both over a longer trip than this, but has trialled well leading and stable usually have them ready to go fresh.
5 Uncanny Timing (Bet Now: $13.00) can be an improver here if the tempo is more genuine. Just needed the run fresh at Bunbury before going to Pinjarra where he found himself in a sit/sprint and given where he was in the run, he had no chance. Third up now, hard fit, he gets his chance to fire, but wants a more genuine tempo than last time.
6 Power And Passion (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of War Chant for Paul Jordan that resumes. This four year old hasn’t raced since December 5 over the mile here when down the track in running last. He does tend to do his best racing on the fresh side, so while I couldn’t back him to win, I could see him sneaking a first four spot.
Race 3. (16:34) BELMONT'S BUNURU PLATE 1000m
I’ll take a chance with first starter 7 Kaymay (Bet Now: $8.50), on debut for Susan Olive. Daughter of Awesome Rock that trialled at Belmont last Monday where she was tucked in behind the speed before getting a narrow inside split and showing good change up speed to win. Off that, think she can measure up here.
4 Queen’s Gift (Bet Now: $3.70) has the race day experience under the belt and that should hold her in good stead for this. Debuted at this track/distance where she had three wide cover in the run. Wobbled on the turn, balanced up and worked to the line pretty well when second to dominant winner Pat’s Got Sass. Has gate one and should prove hard to beat.
1 Passion For War (Bet Now: $71.00) can be an improver here at odds. He debuted down the straight at Pinjarra and was tailed off last behind Story Brook, clearly pulling up with excuses. Trialled well since behind Kaymay and did trial well prior to the debut, so he can run a much improved race.
Race 4. (17:13) MELVISTA STAKES 2200m
Should be a pretty painless watch for 1 Western Empire (Bet Now: $1.18), who is fast becoming a near good thing for the upcoming WA Derby and this should be another successful stepping stone. He spanked them in the JC Roberts under Parnham and really put a gap on them in the straight. Should prove too good yet again.
2 Off Wego (Bet Now: $13.00) is an improver for Adam Durrant. He ran in the JC Roberts and had the back of Western Empire on the turn. Looked a threat, but just didn’t have the change up speed to go with Western Empire. His only chance of turning the tables, potentially, is if this becomes a proper contest. If it’s a sit/sprint, Western Empire will win like a $1.10 pop.
I’m not totally giving up on 4 Flash Ducati (Bet Now: $13.00) from a Derby perspective. I’ve been on his back his past couple. Good second in the Lex Piper behind Western Empire, albeit five lengths away, and was a similar margin away from that smart three year old in the JC Roberts, and was a touch disappointing. Perhaps getting Chris Parnham back aboard will assist.
Race 5. (17:55) KIRIN MEGUMI HANDICAP 1800m
11 Watch Me Ney Ney (Bet Now: $20.00) is my throw at the stumps for the meeting. 007 this prep doesn’t read too flash to the eye, but you break down the three runs, he hasn’t been beaten far and he was a real eye catcher two weeks ago over the mile here when closing off nicely nearer the inside. He’ll love the rise in trip and is returning to positive form. Happy to speck each way.
3 Beret (Bet Now: $4.80) is a little query at the trip, but does get the services of Pike. Comes through the race mentioned above from two weeks back, which was won by Miss Marietta. She got back off the speed and was held up until the 200m, but still thought she was out in time to finish her race off a bit better. Think Pike going back on is a big tick.
1 Kia Ora Star (Bet Now: $4.60) got a much needed confidence boost under the belt last start and that could well fire him up to measure up in town. It wasn’t a strong race at Bunbury last start but he still gave them a spanking and was impressive. Off that win though, should eat up 1800m and gets in well after the claim.
Race 6. (18:30) SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1400m
I think the jockey upgrade of Pike jumping back aboard 5 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $13.00) is enough for me to lean her way. Her recent efforts haven’t been too bad, her latest run being three weeks ago at Bunbury behind Cockyjoy. But, the facts are that in four career wins, Pike has ridden three times, so he rides the mare best and I think he can get her home.
3 Notorious One (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Animal Kingdom for the Gangemi camp that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since November 7 over 1800m where he looked a tired horse at the end of a long first prep, so be forgiving of his effort behind Midnight Blue. Trialled well enough I thought despite being under riding. Market watch for sure.
4 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $8.50) is a very honest animal for Liam O’Loughlin that should run well yet again, especially with Chris Parnham taking back the ride given he rides the gelding very well. Rawiller didn’t ride a bad race on him two weeks ago. Just got caught in a tricky spot and gave away too much head start to Bruce Almighty, who went close to winning again last Saturday, so the form reads well.
Race 7. (19:10) AMELIA PARK HANDICAP 1200m
I think 10 Amasensus (Bet Now: $2.90) can measure up. On the seven day back up for Simon Miller after racing here last Saturday. Parnham lobbed him into a beaut spot just off the speed and once he asked for the mare for the big effort, she responded and put them away impressively. Harder here, but she’s in a purple patch and has race fitness.
1 Some Sort (Bet Now: $7.00) is a quality galloper for Adam Durrant that resumes. Didn’t really fire a shot this time last year, so the stable sent him for a good break and just had one run in the Spring, which resulted in a dominant win during the Kalgoorlie Carnival. Trialled very well recently and is a reliable horse fresh.
8 Creator (Bet Now: $8.50) can be an improver here at odds. The Gangemi team trains this four year old, who had his first run in WA two weeks ago here. Had a suck run nearer the inside and was there to threaten at the top of the straight. Just couldn’t quite finish it off. He’ll come on from that and his best is clearly good enough.
Race 8. (19:45) WA OAKS 2400m
It’s hard seeing anything other than a win for 3 Pure Devotion (Bet Now: $2.00). I thought she was outstanding in defeat in the Natasha. Just got too far back in a sit/sprint, but she closed off with real purpose late, just missing out on the win. Pike on, Winkers on, 2400m…just all points to her getting the job done.
This race is Pure Devotion or different form. I’m with Pure Devotion, but the different form is clearly 4 Temptacion (Bet Now: $3.50). It might be coming around too soon for her, jumping to 2400m from 1700m, but she’s very progressive and has been savaging the line in winning like she wants more ground. Jumping straight to this trip is the query, but she’s heading in the right direction.
1 Brave Angel (Bet Now: $8.50), I highly doubt, turns the tables on Pure Devotion from the Natasha, but she should be around the mark and finish top four. Won the 1000 Guineas before going to the Natasha where she was hard in the market and to my eye, she had her chance and was plain late. The soft draw should give her every chance to run the trip out.
Race 9. (20:20) AUTO CLASSIC BMW HANDICAP 1000m
11 Miss Conteki (Bet Now: $1.65) looks well above average and confident she can continue her winning ways. Debuted at this track/distance at the midweeks where she was a notable drifter in betting despite ending up starting odds, but she produced a brilliant finale from off the pace to win and win well. Destined to be a Saturday class horse, potentially blacktype, so think she can take this out.
7 State Attorney (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Haradasun for Adam Durrant that is first up. Hasn’t raced since January 2 over 1200m here when back near last in the run and launching late to just miss out on the win when a narrow second to the then in form Platinum Bullet. Sprints well fresh and Pike is booked.
Interesting runner here is 4 Highland Beat (Bet Now: $7.50). Resumes for the Gangemi team and is having his second prep for the camp after formerly racing with the Hayes/Dabernig camp in Victoria. He was good first up last prep, but looks wound up to run well fresh here to my eye off the back of a very sharp trial win. Keen to see how he goes.
