Caulfield will play host to a nine race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is oiut eleven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:50) Martin Collins Polytrack-Bm100 1000m
3 Starry Legend (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) will jump on the punny and give his all. Dominant win two back at Sandown before backing up a week later at Caulfield and I just think he went way too hard in front, going far too quick early and mid race, which cost him the win IMO when third to Ranting. If he can harness his speed better, he’ll take a power of beating.
4 Zorro’s Dream (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is racing quite well and is certainly in the mix. Like most, he was run off his legs by Starry Legend at Caulfield a few weeks back but liked the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Ranting. If he’s within range, he’ll take beating against these.
1 Dexelation (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a beauty for Team Jolly. He produced some fab efforts in Melbourne during the Spring and returns after a failed bid to get towards the Goodwood, his last run being a down the track effort in the McKay, but was found to be lame post race. If he brings what he produced in the Spring, he’ll be around the mark.
Race 2. (12:25) Stow Storage Solutions Hcp 1200m
5 Proud Conquest (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) is a smart juvenile for Team Freedman. Not sure he beat a great deal on debut at Donald but that didn’t matter. The clock said it was a big win, clocking the best last 400/200 of the meeting in a dominant display. He’ll slide forward and take beating.
3 Magnaspin (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) looks like he has talent. Team Corstens trained colt that debuted down the straight two weeks ago at Flemington and I thought he worked to the line pretty well in defeat behind a very promising juvenile in Doull. I think that form stands up very much so for a race like this.
7 Atlantic Ocean (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is one I could entertain for wider multiples. Pass mark on debut at Warwick Farm before going to the Doull race mentioned above and worked to the line okay without really threatening. Dangerous at odds if the inside gate can be used to advantage.
Race 3. (13:00) Lamaro's Hotel Hcp 1600m
3 Oriental Legend (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a quality colt for John Sadler that is racing like he will eat up the mile. Ridden cold under the lights at Pakenham last time out before slicing his way through the field and drove hard late to win and win well. He was a few weeks between runs so you’d like to think there is improvement to come and up to the mile is ideal IMO.
4 General Firepower (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is knocking on the door to win for the in form Michael Moroney camp. Eye catcher from the back two starts ago behind Carlsile at Sandown. Then he went to Flemington where the Blinkers went on, he led and gave a solid kick, only to be run down late by Flash Feeling, who was good in defeat last Saturday, so the form reads well, and this is a winanble race.
1 Chartres (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. I’d be forgiving of his down the track effort in The Coast. He was back and wide in a race dominated by those on speed, won by leader Rustic Steel, who won the Scone Cup six days later, so the form reads super and back to his own age, Chartrest appeals.
Race 4. (13:35) Rod Griffiths Mem. Trophy-Bm78 1100m
13 Gentility (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) gets the nod. Beautifully bred filly for Peter Moody and Arrowfield that resumes, having not raced since a very dominant maiden win at Mornington back on New Years Day, where she spanked them from the front. Clock suggested it was solid and the form has been franked with five winners coming from it. Two jumpouts to get ready, she’ll roll forward from the wide gate and prove to be one of the leading contenders.
14 Speed Lover (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) has returned in good order for Team McEvoy. Just missed out on the win fresh at Mildura before going to Parks track at Morphettville where she was run off her legs but sliced her way through the field and was good late when second to Queman. Like her up to 1100m and if she can settle closer in the run, she’ll be dangerous.
3 Morning Melody (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) looks better suited as a short course filly. They tried her at 1300m/1400m but she just doesn’t see it out at this level at this stage of her career. They sent her back to 1100m at Flemington where she led and gave a solid kick when third to No Way Ever. She’ll give cheek.
Race 5. (14:10) Catanach's Jewellers (Bm78) 1100m
6 Dance To Dubai (Bet Now: $6.50) will jump on the bunny and run a bold race. She seems to race best early on in the prep and that trend contunued when resuming with a win at Caulfield a few weeks back, leading throughout and just getting the win over a gallant Aquagirl in a tight finish. Unbeaten second up, she appeals.
5 Little Stevie (Bet Now: $16.00) deserves another chance. She ran behind Dance To Dubai here three weeks ago and didn’t really get a proper chance to build momentum, getting tight between runners, so overall, she seemed to have her chance, I thought there were excuses. If she can get the rub of the green and get clear air, off her prior form, she’s hard to beat.
3 Selburose (Bet Now: $7.50) has a touch of quality about her when right and should be respected. Chris Waller trained mare that resumed at Gosford three weeks ago where she had the suck run near the speed and was there to threaten, but couldn’t quite finish the job when fourth. Fitter, she’s in the mix as a first four threat.
Race 6. (14:45) Take It To The Neds Level-Bm78 1200m
15 Latino Blend (Bet Now: $11.00) is a filly with talent for Team Snowden. She was good against the pattern two back at Randwick behind Much Much Better before going to Gosford where she got back and was good late without threatening behind Coal Crusher. Hard to beat if she’s within range.
4 Sig Positano (Bet Now: $7.00) is flying for Patrick Payne and is knocking on the door. Ran over 1200m here three weeks ago and he should have won. Just hit a flat spot at the wrong but picked up and surged hard late, getting bloused on the peg by Blaze A Trail. Hard fit now, it’s D-Day.
7 Whipcracker Way (Bet Now: $10.00) is a knockout hope. Good in defeat two back at Sandown behind Starry Legend before going down the straight at Flemington and was far from disgraced in defeat behind Easy Single. I doubt he wins, but back around a bend and up in trip are two ticks.
Race 7. (15:25) Neds Punters Toolbox (Bm100) 2000m
9 Don’t Doubt Dory (Bet Now: $5.50) is the each way bet for me here. Julien Welsh trained gelding that is on the seven day back up after racing over the mile last Saturday. He had a suck run behind the speed and battled away pretty well when a close up third to surprise winner Le Don De Vie. Yet to tick the 2000m box, but 51kg and getting the suck run behind Grandslam, he’ll only run well IMO.
2 Grandslam (Bet Now: $2.30) is a few weeks between runs for the Maher/Eustace camp since racing in the Warrnambool Cup where he just struggled on the bog track in a clear forgive. Like him back to 2000m and with Linda Meech aboard, he’ll lead comfortably and look the winner for a fair chunk of the race.
10 Attention Run (Bet Now: $19.00) is sneaky flying for Ben Brisbourne. Two runs for the stable have been excellent, with a solid effort at Wagga followed by a good effort from off the speed at Caulfield behind an in form Milford. Staying at 2000m is the knock but has upside to come you would assume.
Race 8. (16:05) Colin Little (Bm84) 1600m
14 Visinari (Bet Now: $3.40) is heading in the right direction for the Price/Kent Jr camp. 2/2 for the new camp, bolting up fresh at Pakenham before going to Sandown where he took a little while to wind into his work but the last 200m, he really got into his work and was impressive late in winning. He seems to be firing on firmer footing, so hard to beat if that can eventuate here.
8 Sir Davy (Bet Now: $7.00) is a line chaser and that is such a good trait for a horse to have so early in his career. The race was there to be won fourweeks ago at Sandown and he really surged hard late under Meech to score in a driving go. Good test here, but no reason why he can’t win again.
7 Parure (Bet Now: $26.00) is in for a good prep I think for Team Hayes. Quality filly that was around 13 months between runs when resuming over 1400m at Flemington in the Winter Championship Heat and I thought she was a huge pass mark in defeat, closing off well behind Triple Missile. Might be second up syndrome on the cards, but she has class/quality, so watch the market.
Race 9. (16:40) Schweppes (Bm84) 1400m
15 Cambourne (Bet Now: $7.00) deserves another chance. Market didn’t want him late when resuming at Warrnambool and it proved spot on as he failed to fire a shot in the conditions behind Tuvalu. I reckon he’s a much better horse on firmer footing, which he gets here, and with the claim, prepared to give him another look.
2 First Accused (Bet Now: $6.00) is a very interesting runner. Winning machine for Scott Brunton that comes to Melbourne off the back of a first up win at Hobart where he made a mess of them, them being an ordinary bunch relative to what he faces here, but always have to respect the Tassie runners when they venture to the main land.
5 Paul’s Regret (Bet Now: $15.00) is very capable with her best. Peter Chow trained mare that hasn’t set the world on fire in two runs back from a spell, the latest being over 1400m at Flemington when down the track behind Triple Missile. Back to 78 grade and a soft gate, her best is clearly good enough.
