A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Rosehill this Saturday for Expressway Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Expressway Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Expressway Stakes
Race 1. (12:25) Tab Highway Plate (c3) 1500m
6 Racketeering (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) on top in the opener. Progressive animal for Lisa Sheppard that resumed on testing ground at Coffs Harbour where he was last in the run before slicing his way through the field and charged clear late for a dominant win. Fitter and up to 1500m, from the soft draw, he looks to be a horse on the up.
4 King’s Trust (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a little query at 1500m but he’s an honest animal for Terry Robinson and the stable should always be respected in these races. He tried his heart out here a fortnight back but was simply no match for Banju. I think with an economical steer, 1500m should be okay.
10 Lord Desanimaux (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) will be around the mark. He was over a month between runs when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago in a Highway, working home strongly nearer the inside when second, albeit five lengths away from Banju. Fitter, he’ll take beating here.
Race 2. (13:00) Canonbury Stakes 1100m
I’m quite keen here on 4 Great Barrier Reef (Bet Now: $1.40 TOP ODDS), a beautifully bred colt on debut for Chris Waller. This guy has had two trials to get ready for start one, the first trial seeing him win back in November before a let up. Trialled last week and gee he looked to be trucking under J Mac in a good piece of work despite finishing sixth. I think he is quite smart and can make a winning debut.
3 Flashing Steel (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) has race experience on his side and that should hold him in good stead. Annabel Neasham trained that was a real eye catcher here on debut against the pattern when a closing third to Sweet Ride in a good effort. Small field helps his cause and outside the favourite, the race is thin.
2 Best Of Bordeaux (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Kacy Fogden trains this colt, who is on debut here off the back of a very sharp trial win at the Sunny Coast where he gapped them and ran good overall time. A win here and he’s in the Slipper so you can understand why he’s here. First four threat.
Race 3. (13:35) Widden Stakes 1100m
1 Ebhaar (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) is a quality filly for Team Snowden that resumes, with eyes I dare say towards the Blue Diamond to start with given she did win the Merson Cooper on debut at Caulfield, where she was impressive and ran fast time. Sharp trial win at Warwick Farm to get ready and looks the one to beat.
2 Ojai (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks hard to beat for James Cummings. She did a really good job in the Spring, winning the Kirkham Plate on debut before a close up third in the Golden Gift. Prizemoney wise, she’s assured a Slipper berth, so whether this is the look for blacktype next to her name, not sure, but she closed off quite well in a recent Rosehill trial.
6 Pantonario (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) comes here for the WaterBott camp off a mini freshen up. Resumed on the Kenso track back on New Years Day when leading and giving a solid kick but just felt the pinch late when third to Fureburn. Tick over trial was solid without jumping up and down, but she has the right racing pattern to give this a shake.
Race 4. (14:10) Chandon (bm72) 1500m
4 And We Danced (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller after racing over the mile here last Saturday at Randwick. I thought McEvoy gave her a peach and she looked the winner at the top of the straight but was just no match for Room Number. Back to 1500m I like and gets a suck run.
2 Centimental (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) looks hard to beat here for Chris Waller. Third up after a couple of strong efforts, the latest coming over 1300m here two weeks ago when a closing second to the very much in form Titanium Power. Has a good third up record and up to 1500m, she appeals.
3 Metro Legend (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a yard watch. Resumed here three weeks back and he ran his race in the mounting yard. He sweated up badly and in the run, sat on speed and tired late behind an in form Oakfield Arrow. This isn’t a strong race IMO so he doesn’t need to improve much to be in the finish.
Race 5. (14:45) Midway (bm72) 1300m
Giving respect to 4 Military Expert (Bet Now: $2.80), who resumes for Annabel Neasham. This guy hasn’t raced since the Spring where he ran a close up third in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude behind the Group l performed Lightsaber. Loved the way he trucked on speed in a recent Warwick Farm and has the runs on the board to take this out.
8 Akihiro (Bet Now: $8.50) is a quality colt for Gary Portelli that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since the Victoria Derby when a tired horse, at the end of his prep, and looking for the paddock when tailed off behind Hitotsu. Closed off nicely in a Warwick Farm and though 1300m is on the short side, he brings an element of class.
This is a prep run for 16 Clyde (Bet Now: $34.00) given he looks to be a Derby candidate. He ran in the Victoria Derby at the end of last prep and I thought he was far from disgraced behind a potential star, Hitotsu. Just one soft 735m trial…I doubt he wins, but a first four contender if fence in run is the A1 spot.
Race 6. (15:20) Schweppes (bm78) 2000m
7 Casino Kid (Bet Now: $3.60) is racing like he will eat up 2000m. He’s flying this time in for Jan Bowen and his consistency was rewarded with a spank job of his rivals over 1800m here three weeks ago, where it was his first look beyond the mile, and he passed with flying colours. Off that, 2000m here is fine and he’s just so genuine.
2 Crystal Pegasus (Bet Now: $3.20) looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed over 1500m here two weeks ago where he was behind the speed throughout and just lacked the change up speed, but was good late I thought behind Monegal, finishing second. Fitter and up in trip, he appeals.
5 Travest (Bet Now: $6.00) is hit and miss but the thing that I’ve been crying out for him since day one pretty much has been Blinkers. They were applied last time out at Warwick Farm and the end result was an impressive win from off the speed. I think 2000m will be okay and he does have the talent.
Race 7. (16:00) Expressway Stakes 1200m
Great to see 6 Anamoe (Bet Now: $1.75) back at the races and his class will carry him a long way. He hasn’t raced since the Cox Plate where he ran a mighty second to State Of Rest in what was the race of the Spring. 1200m is on the short side, but he has class, brilliance, and gets the weight pull.
1 Standout (Bet Now: $7.00) is nearly getting the tag of being a nonny so I think this is an important race as to whether or not he’s Group l quality or not. Hasn’t raced since The Hunter where he was at the end of his prep and looking for the paddock when down the track behind Lost And Running. Looked well enough in a recent trial behind Nature Strip and he does tend to race quite well on the fresh side.
I’m saying 4 Forbidden Love (Bet Now: $7.50) comes here to run well. Disappointing Spring prep, which ended with a down the track effort in the Golden Eagle. Been given a good break and I thought she was outstanding in her trial behind Nature Strip, to my eye seemingly going as well as the gun sprinter. Great 1200m record, flies fresh, she’s hard to beat.
Race 8. (16:40) Ned Whisky (bm88) 1500m
4 Yiyi (Bet Now: $2.70) looks to be in for a really good prep. Resumed in the Kingsheir race from three weeks back and I loved the way he closed off against the race shape when a closing second. He is better suited at around 2000m but off that resumption, he has to be hard to beat here.
6 Wairere Falls (Bet Now: $10.00) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller after racing last Saturday at Randwick. I thought he was there to win but just lacked the change up speed to put them away when a close up fourth to Lackeen. Good track/distance record and always respect Waller horses on the back up.
9 Monegal (Bet Now: $18.00) commands some form of respect given how dominant she was here two weeks ago. She was big odds but was absolutely trucking in the run under Clipperton and as soon as he pushed the button, away the mare went and she was dominant. Harder here, but she’s in form and can hold it.
Race 9. (17:20) Rosehill Bowling Club (bm88) 1200m
6 Rule Of Law (Bet Now: $1.90) is a different horse since being gelded. 3/3 this time in, and translated midweek form to Saturday form when a strong winner a few weeks ago at Rosehill, defying a notable betting drift. What upside is left? Not entirely sure, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
4 The Bopper (Bet Now: $6.00) gets another chance with me. Impressive fresh win at Randwick before racing here two weeks ago and I thought Josh Parr missed the boat and by the time he got going, it was race over behind Mr Mosaic. I think 1200m will be fine for him and third up, he should be hard fit.
5 Dream Circle (Bet Now: $15.00) looks hard to beat. He ran behind Mr Mosaic a fortnight back here and his run was one of the best of the meeting, charging home from near last when a close up third to the Ryan/Alexiou speed demon. He does race best over the shorter trips I feel and 1200m here looks ideal.
Race 10. (18:00) Precise Fire (bm78) 1400m
9 Tamerlane (Bet Now: $6.00) is bursting to win one. Total forgive two back at Randwick before racing here two weeks ago when back in the run and working home strongly late when second to the very much in form mare, Fashchanel. He’s had little luck this prep, but is seemingly flying. Deserves a win and gets his chance.
10 Crosscheck (Bet Now: $12.00) was big odds when resuming with a Midway win here two weeks ago, but watching the replay, despite a $41 SP, in from $71, the 0.3L margin flattered her rivals. She was trucking but held up before getting clear late and savaging the line to score. Has to be respected here.
3 Impasse (Bet Now: $21.00) should be suited up in trip and can be an improver. I think his best days are behind him but he had specking first up at Randwick and wasn’t too bad I thought despite beating one runner home behind Animate. Like him up in trip and could sneak a first four spot.
