A bumper nine race program has been assembled for Kalgoorlie this Saturday where it is Kalgoorlie Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Kalgoorlie Cup 🏆: View the Field for the Kalgoorlie Cup
Race 1. (14:13) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1760m
2 Cuban Twist (Bet Now: $3.30) is looking to make it four on the bounce and I think she can do that. This mare hasn’t raced since August 9 when an impressive winner at this track/distance, perhaps at the end of a long prep and looking like she needed a break but still won. Liked the tick over trial and this is a very winnable metro race for her.
4 Staaden (Bet Now: $3.10) is the one with the city form that is one of the hardest to beat. Just found the staying trip a bit much too back, so came back to this track/distance just under two weeks ago and he bolted up under a lovely ride from Mitch Pateman, who is the leading rider at this track and remains on for this race. Hard to beat.
The best version of 7 Street Fair (Bet Now: $7.00) is certainly capable. Just not sure what upside he has got left. Was keen on him on a couple of occasions earlier on in the prep but he let me down and he was pretty plain last time out over the mile. Prepared to give him another chance here given the lack of overall depth.
Race 2. (14:52) No-Metro-Wins Last Year 2100m
1 Bollinger Boy (Bet Now: $2.35) looks hard to beat here for Adam Durrant. Just over two weeks between runs since racing over 2100m at Belmont where he was stepping up from the mile and really, I thought he had every chance, but perhaps just needed the run under the belt at the trip? Very thin race this, so think he just has to hold his form.
2 So Schmick (Bet Now: $7.50) is a fascinating runner. Former Victorian that makes his WA debut, having not raced since August 17 on the Ballarat Synthetic when a close up second to the progressive stayer Piccatric. His best is clearly good enough to win this, despite the break between runs. He’s a definite market watch.
7 Losing Ticket (Bet Now: $51.00) is potentially making up the numbers here, but I think a rise in trip does suit. Was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1760m here when back in the run and never really a winning factor. Can sit much closer in the run from the good draw and is right down in the weights. One for exotics.
Race 3. (15:32) Maiden 1100m
1300m back to 1100m is interesting with 7 Brave Dream (Bet Now: $2.80) but she does clearly look the best horse in the race so I’m going her way. Resumed over 1300m at Belmont two weeks ago in a Maiden but she just got too far back in the run and was never a winning factor, but did close off nicely. That’s why back to 1100m is interesting, but think she’s got enough quality to get home.
8 Iseered Iseered (Bet Now: $3.20) is a son of Safeguard for the Luke Fernie camp that is on debut. This colt has had one public trial, which came back in May at Lark Hill when winning and winning nicely. Hasn’t been sighted since, so a bit of guessing involved, but a first starter for the Fernie camp on Kalgoorlie Cup Day, suspect he’ll be popular.
1 Tallinn (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of My Admiration for Brett Pope that is first up, having not raced since mid April when down the track at Pinjarra behind the progressive galloper Aberdeen Queen. Thought the Lark Hill trial last week was impressive to the eye, he draws gate one and gets Pateman to steer. Knockout chance.
Race 4. (16:12) RTG 72+ Handicap 1100m
1100m is just about the maximum pain barrier for 1 Mervyn (Bet Now: $3.40) but his class just about gets him home here. He is two months between runs since contesting a 1000m race at Belmont when scooting along in front as he usually does and gave a good kick but just felt the pinch late when fourth to Floyd. No horse of that quality here, finds the front and I think can hold on.
Big watch here on 8 Some Sort (Bet Now: $2.90), who resumes for Adam Durrant. Had a two run Autumn prep after what was a promising Winter/Spring last year and gee he was disappointing in both runs, really failing to fire a shot each time. Been given a good break and the Lark Hill trial win was sharp to the eye, so keen to see how he goes.
4 Bos Taurus (Bet Now: $15.00) lacks the class of some of these but will give a sight and could snag a first four spot. He comes through the Goldrush, a lead up to the Hannans, and he was outclassed behind Wocknwoll. He’s a track/distance specialist and looks well in at the weights. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 5. (16:52) RTG 66+ Handicap 1300m
Got a fair bit of time for 9 Indigo Blue (Bet Now: $2.90) and I think she can win again. Waywardness beat her on debut but she made amends next time out with a strong win in a Saturday 3YO race, with a patient ride from Johnston-Porter being decisive. Takes on the older horses here, but think she’s well and truly up to this level.
Big watch here is 1 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $4.80). Blessed with so much talent but injury has plagued his career. Not sure what happened last prep but as a whole, he didn’t really fire a shot. Last run came in July when down the track at Belmont behind Inspirational Girl. No trials to get ready, so a market and yard watch for sure.
4 Carabinier (Bet Now: $9.00) is a knockout chance. Wasn’t the strongest 0MW that he won two weeks back at Belmont, but the way in which he won and the turn of foot he produced was quite impressive, and defied a notable betting drift. Second up record is pretty plain, but any hint of the resumption here, he’s in the mix.
Race 6. (17:30) RTG 66+ Handicap 1600m
Looks a lovely race for the Adam Durrant trained 3 Bogart (Bet Now: $1.65). This four year old resumed over 1400m at Belmont two weeks ago when well supported to win, but just got a bit too far back in the run. In saying that, he did finish off quite nicely at the end when fourth to Tycoon Storm. Suited up to the mile and depth is nowhere near as strong.
9 Sluice Box (Bet Now: $7.00) has done a pretty good job since coming to Kalgoorlie. His racing pattern isn’t ideal, but if they overdo it in front, he’ll be strong late. Ran over 1400m here last time out when back near last in the run and made up ground late in a solid effort. Racing like 1600m will suit him and smaller field helps his cause.
8 Sigil (Bet Now: $10.00) is three weeks between runs for the Peter Fernie camp since racing at Belmont where he was back near last in the run and did make up ground without really threatening behind Playing Marika. Yet to really fire a shot on his new home track, but the lack of overall depth helps his cause against this lot.
Race 7. (18:10) Westspeed Platinum (rs0mw) 1400m
3 Fiery Water (Bet Now: $3.10) gets the nod for me. Adam Durrant trained gelding that comes here off the back of a strong win at Belmont last Wednesday when on speed, getting a soft time of it in front, and was never really going to get beat from the 400m onwards. Bit harder here, but stable does have a great record at this Carnival.
6 Power And Passion (Bet Now: $21.00) is a key threat. He comes through the race mentioned above that Fiery Water saluted in. Power And Passion was back off the speed and in a sit/sprint, not sure he was entirely suited, so want to be forgiving of that run, albeit he wasn’t disgraced. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, hard to beat.
Think back up to 1400m will suit the local hope 8 Arabian’s Girl (Bet Now: $126.00). She was 1400m back to 1300m last time out where she was back near last in the run and never really a winning factor, but did make up ground late in a solid effort. Now back up to 1400m, with the claim for Ramoly, think she’s a knockout chance.
Race 8. (18:45) Kalgoorlie Cup 2200m
I don’t think weight will stop the train that is 1 Come Play With Me (Bet Now: $6.50). He has a fair bit on these in terms of class given this time last year, he won a Group l Metropolitan at Randwick. Resumed in the Coolgardie Cup over 1760m and was very good late when warming to the task behind Western Temple. Four time winner at 2200m, has upside to come, class…think he just wins.
4 Friar Fox (Bet Now: $3.80) is a key threat. This mare can be hit and miss but she’s in form now and could well go on with it. She won the Boulder Cup just under two weeks ago, and the ride was a beauty, riding her cold and waiting for the gaps to appear. Once they did, she dashed and was impressive late. Harder here, but she’s capable.
Would be a wonderful story if 2 Ihtsahymn (Bet Now: $8.00) won. Ran third in this race last year and looks to be ticking along nicely for the 2020 edition. Comes through the Boulder Cup where he was a bit one paced given it was his first run since his Darwin Cup triumph, and I thought he was okay late. He’ll be strong at the end of this.
Race 9. (19:25) Graduation Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Fitter and up to 1200m, looks a lovely race for the Adam Durrant trained mare 3 Special Choice (Bet Now: $2.50). Resumed over 1000m at Belmont two weeks ago when back in the run but closed off really nicely late when third to the in form Eeyore Wayz. Depth here is nowhere near as strong and think she’s just about a good thing.
2 Tajmali (Bet Now: $4.40) has a fab record at Kalgoorlie and will give an almighty sight from near the front. Resumed over 1200m at Belmont when attempting to lead throughout and she tried hard. Just think condition just gave way late when running fourth. She’ll take good improvement from that outing and prove a worthy contender.
Back up to 1200m I do like for 9 Blooms (Bet Now: $13.00). Trevor Tasker trained mare that was 1200m back to 1100m when when racing just under two weeks back when back off the speed and was solid in defeat without jumping up and down behind Beethoven. Now back up to 1200m, she has a great record here, so for mine is a knockout chance.
