Outside ‘The Masters’ the biggest race meeting at Ascot is Karrakatta Plate Day and the 2021 edition rolls around this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Karrakatta Plate 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Karrakatta Plate
Race 1. (15:23) TABTOUCH AUTUMN SERIES HEAT 1 1000m
2 Dew West (Bet Now: $5.00) finds a very winnable race to resume in. Jason Pateman trained mare that resumes, having not raced since January 9 over 1200m here when finding a strong ratings race and just not quite measuring up behind a very talented animal in Excellent Dream. No public trials, but stable gets Pike for the return.
1 Scooter’s Machine (Bet Now: $7.00) has been up a little while but continues to hold his form pretty well. I thought he had excuses when racing over 1400m here two weeks ago. Just copped far too much heat in front which set up it up for those from the back, namely the eventual winner Pletto. Back to 1000m is interesting but I suspect it’ll be jump and run.
6 City Circle (Bet Now: $7.00) doesn’t have the best winning strike rate but is an honest mare for Neville Parnham that is generally around the mark. Ran at this track/distance last Wednesday and was close up in defeat in a solid effort, albeit a much easier race, when fourth to Pablo’s Poem. Couldn’t back to win but one for exotics.
Race 2. (15:59) SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1100m
Good little race for the three year olds here. Landed with 2 Iseered Iseered (Bet Now: $3.50) for Luke Fernie. Ran over this track/distance just over two weeks ago and it was sustained speed from the front that came to the fore, leading throughout and he was dominant in the run to the line. Harder here, but race fitness is on his side and will be out of trouble near the front.
6 Giancana (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented filly for Simon Miller that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Placid Ark during the Summer Carnival when far from disgraced in defeat behind Chantorque. Looked sharp a couple of weeks back in a Belmont trial and stable gets Pike to ride for the resumption.
3 Island Charm (Bet Now: $9.50) has been up a little while but I do like her back to 1100m. Found the 1400m a bridge too far in the Breeders last start behind Kissonallforcheeks. That level, especially at the trip, is a bridge too far. Back to 1100m and back to this level does look a much better recipe.
Race 3. (16:39) BYRON BAY PREMIUM LAGER HANDICAP 1400m
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 9 Chili Is Hot (Bet Now: $35.00). She resumed over 1200m here just over two weeks ago where she was back near last in the run and spotted those in front a decent start. Never really a threat, but liked the way she finished her race off for a horse that is better suited over further, which is what she gets here, and does have quality.
5 Special View (Bet Now: $9.50) has done nothing wrong since joining Hayden Ballantyne. Just back to 1400m I’m not sure with him but all you can do is win and that is what he has done in two runs for the new stable. Latest run came over 1700m at Bunbury when leading throughout and was dominant. He can measure up and perhaps will look to make this a truly run 1400m.
11 Stellar Vista (Bet Now: $11.00) looks a likely type for Simon Miller. This filly had trialled up pretty well prior to debuting over 1300m at Pinjarra. Took a little while to get into her work, but once she did, gee she produced the goods and was strong late in getting the job done. Needs to improve, but in the right camp to do so.
Race 4. (17:18) AMELIA PARK LAMB HANDICAP 1200m
3 Amelia’s Contraire (Bet Now: $2.80) on top. Simon Miller trained mare that is four weeks between runs since racing at Bunbury. She lobbed into a lovely spot just off the speed and tried hard to wear them down. Just couldn’t quite finish it off but battled away really well when third to Cockyjoy. Pike takes over and a strong 1200m should be an ideal set up.
1 Cuballing (Bet Now: $3.30) has the quality to win, but gee he’s short enough at $3. He ran three weeks ago over 1000m here where he was near the rail off a decent speed. Had his chance to wind into his work but just held his spot. The query is 1200m, but perhaps he is a better horse when outside horses, so the gate does give him that chance.
2 Annihlator (Bet Now: $23.00) can sneak a first four spot at big odds. He hasn’t done a great deal in two runs back from a break but that is the norm with him. He gets better as the prep goes on, so while he’s third up, he might need one more, especially given he’s coming back in trip, but is capable of a very much improved showing.
Race 5. (17:54) AMELIA PARK LODGE HANDICAP 1100m
I think if ever Clairvoyance is going to get rolled, it’ll be here, so I’m going with 5 Platinum Bullet (Bet Now: $7.00). She ran over 1200m here two weeks ago where like she usually does, just didn’t take advantage of the good draw. Ended up well back in the run and charged home late to run fourth to impressive winner Excellent Dream. If Pike can sit her closer in the run, I think she’ll only run well.
6 Clairvoyance (Bet Now: $1.45) is a potential star so it’s great to see her back at the races. I just worry she’s had her injury woes, she’s here off just one 400m trial…how forward will she be? Market will be fascinating with her. She could easily blow this field away and head to Adelaide for a race like the Sangster and measure up there. Market will tell you if she’s ready.
2 Ziebell (Bet Now: $20.00) will make sure this is a proper 1100m contest. He ran over 1200m in the Excellent Dream race mentioned above. Led at a solid tempo and gave a reasonable kick but couldn’t quite finish it off and tired late. Short course is his go in life so back to 1100m I do like for him.
Race 6. (18:30) AMELIA PARK BEEF HANDICAP 1500m
Now that 9 Pletto (Bet Now: $2.30) has a win on the board for the prep, I think she can go right on with it now. She had been bursting to win a race this time in and it finally came two weeks ago over 1400m here, sitting off a good speed before easing into clear air and she finished right over the top in wearing down Bruce Almighty. Only horse I want from that race, got upside and Pike steers.
4 Tinsnip (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the seven day back up for Adam Durrant after racing last Saturday over 1400m. If you were on, apologies for bringing up the nightmare. Pilot error cost him the win IMO. If CJP stuck to the inside, the run presented, he gets through and likely wins. But, he probed away from the inside for clear air and it just didn’t eventuate. Going well this horse and is a leading threat.
2 Gunnago (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Jason Pateman trained stayer that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since September 19 at Belmont when a close up fourth over 2100m. He saves his best for Belmont, so he’ll be getting ready for when that track is open for the Winter. He can finish top four with luck in running.
Race 7. (19:05) AMELIA PARK WINES HANDICAP 1800m
I’ll back in the judgement of Roy Rogers to have 2 Big Bada Boom (Bet Now: $2.40) ready to go. This talented animal hasn’t raced since Feb 13 when on speed throughout and kicking on strongly to win over this track/distance, making it five wins on the bounce. Comes here with no trials, just residual fitness, so market will be a guide, but generally the camp has them ready to go in town.
4 Mosseratti (Bet Now: $11.00) has been around the block a few times but is an absolute beauty and tries hard every time he steps out. That was the case two weeks ago when resuming over the mile here. He was back off the speed and didn’t stop chasing in a game effort when third to That’s Funny Az. Fitter, up to 1800m, likeable.
1 Bonneville Black (Bet Now: $8.00) is getting ready for the Belmont season, but can run a cheeky race here at odds. Resumed over 1400m here three weeks ago and didn’t mind the way he finished his race off from the back behind talented mare Tycoon Storm. 2000m+ is when you’ll see the best of him but a win wouldn’t entirely shock.
Race 8. (19:40) KARRAKATTA PLATE 1200m
I’d love to see McGruddy use gate one with 1 Ex Sport Man (Bet Now: $9.50). The Magic Millions winner ran in the Perth Stakes where he was back near last in the run and never really a factor, but did make up ground late in a race dominated by those near the speed. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll take beating.
The soft gate means 15 Pat’s Got Sass (Bet Now: $5.50) comes right into play. Was happy to risk her given the 1200m does seem a query, but the inside gate means she’ll do no work, which is the opposite of what she did in the Supremacy when wide no cover on speed. She can win this for sure.
10 Liwa (Bet Now: $10.00) will love a fast run 1200m. She ran fourth in the Supremacy and was an eye catcher late, working home with real purpose late in the piece. She will want a hot tempo in front and that is usually the case in the Karrakatta so she will get her chance to finish over the top.
Race 9. (20:15) CROWN PERTH HANDICAP 1400m
I’m with 3 Watch Me Dance (Bet Now: $4.40) in the get out. Steve Wolfe trained filly that has class and fitter, up to 1400m, she’ll take a power of beating. Resumed over 1200m here two weeks ago in what was pretty much a prep and she closed off with real purpose late behind Excellent Dream. Can sit closer in the run from the good draw and up in trip. She’ll do me.
6 Tycoon Storm (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare that needed to get her confidence up early and she got it as early as possible when winning first up three weeks back at this track/distance, sitting on speed and wearing them down late to win and win well. Does no work from the draw and is unbeaten second up.
7 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now: $7.50) has been a frustrating horse to follow this prep but his best is definitely good enough to be in the finish. He ran in the Tycoon Storm race mentioned above. Just got too far back in the run but did make up ground despite never really being a winning threat. He can take this out if he’s within range.
