A nine race card has been assembled for Randwick this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:45) 2019 Owners Rewards Handicap 1200m
Going the way of 2 Art Collection (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) in what looks a very tricky maiden. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since the Autumn Carnival, where she had two runs. First up she finished three lengths off Loving Gaby at Caulfield before going to the Talindert at Flemington and ran her race in the mounting yard so a total forgive there. Been given a good break and liked the way she let down when asked to win her trial.
Think we’ll get a good guide here as to whether or not 4 Mandela (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is a contender or pretender. Threw the race away on debut at Canterbury. Ordered to trial, trialled great and then ran here a fortnight ago where he was a tad unlucky but at the same time, he was entitled to do more. Tail was swishing when whipped so still new to the caper. Couldn’t back him to win.
This race really has a tail to it I think. 9 Honey Go Lightly (Bet Now: $31.00 TOP ODDS) is the interesting one. Anthony Cummings trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since debuting in a Gimcrack where she started $7 but finished down the track behind Catch Me. Been given a good long spell and has trialled well leading. $7 in a Gimcrack vs decent odds here seems odd, so certainly one to watch.
Race 2. (12:20) NSW Trainers Association Handicap (70) 1200m
7 True Detective (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS) looks hard to beat here. Thought Bowman was a bit cute on him when resuming at Rosehill three weeks ago, but can understand why he was given the horse was first up. Just allowed Spend to dash past him and a combination of that horse tiring and True Detective finding made it a close finish, with Spend getting the win. Fitter and up to 1200m, he’s one of the hardest to beat.
5 Lifetime Quest (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a Kris Lees trained four year who was given no hope via the ride first up at Newcastle when just missing. Then went to the midweeks at Warwick Farm where he was given a 12/10 by Blake Shinn and tried hard but was no match for the sustained speed produced by Rare Episode. Third up, should be ready fitness wise and stable is flying.
8 Battle Guardian (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a WaterBott trained galloper that was backed with real confidence on debut at Gosford and under a lovely steer from Blake Shinn, he finished best over the 1000m and was too good. Harder here, but stable is having a good run at movement, he’s got upside and coming straight to Saturday grade means the stable might have an opinion of him.
Race 3. (12:55) NSW Racehorse Owners Association Trophy (88) 1600m
1 Gresham (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) has been a model of consistency this time in for Chris Waller and is knocking on the door to win a race. He’s racing for the third week on the bounce. He ran third at Rosehill last Saturday and was good in defeat behind Foxy Housewife, coming back 50m in trip from the week prior, so back up to the mile with Bowman back on, he’s hard to beat.
4 Pelethronius (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) has found some really good form for David Pfieffer at his past two outings. Lapped up the bog to win at Warwick Farm two back before racing at this track/distance two weeks ago in a 78 when given a peach by Bowman and was too good. Gets conditions to suit once again and one thing I’ve noticed recently is that horses that have previously handled a Randwick track that’s rain affected, they generally run better than others who have other wet track form but not at Randwick.
I reckon he’s flying 3 Salsonic (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) and yes, I know it’s been ages since he has won and yes he is one of those horses that will keep producing the teasing run. But he’s crying out for a mile on a big track on firmer footing and that’s the set up he gets here. Thought he was very good in the Winter Challenge last Saturday, and a tad unlucky too after not getting the clearest of paths. Normal luck and convinced he’ll go close.
Race 4. (13:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
I think 16 Festival Of Light (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is certainly worth something each way. Rodney Robb rarely comes to town with a horse, so have to be on guard when he brings one, and he has this gelding flying this prep, winning 2/2, both over 1100m at Dubbo. Dynamic first up win, clocking good late splits, with second/third winning since. He then raced two weeks ago at the same track/distance where he was forced very wide on the turn but knuckled down strongly to win. He sits off a hot speed, give in the track no issue, down in the weights…why not?
Metro form is usually a good way to go with these Highway races so have to respect 1 I Am Capitan (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS). Just missed out on a Highway win at this track/distance first up before going to Warwick Farm where he had to chase from a fair way out and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Rare Episode. Third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
19 Caccini (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) has come back in really good order for the Norm Garner stable, both runs this time in coming in Highways here. First up beat all bar San Marco before stepping up to 1100m where she closed off nicely late to run fourth to Irish Songs. Looks ready for the 1200m now and with good speed engaged here, she’ll sit off it and try to ambush them late.
Race 5. (14:05) Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (88) 1200m
The trial says he might need the run, but have to go with the class/quality, which lies with 7 Roheryn (Bet Now: $1.45) . He created such an impression in his opening prep during the Spring, winning his first two before going to Rosehill where he just got a mile back off the speed and had no chance behind Chess Star, but his late splits were that of a quality animal. One soft trial off a long break is the query, but he has these on toast re class.
Don’t underestimate 2 Split Lip (Bet Now: $16.00), a former Will Clarken runner that is having her first run for Clare Cunningham and we’ve seen what a great job that the stable does with these tried horses. This mare hasn’t raced since the Glasshouse at the Sunny Coast when doing too much work in the run. She certainly has enough class/quality to figure in the finish.
1 Improvement (Bet Now: $7.00) is a really interesting runner. Talented mare for Gary Portelli that resumes in a pretty solid sprint race but at her best she’s certainly capable of measuring up. Hasn’t raced since Cup Day 2017 when midfield in the mares race behind Pedrena, but she did look sharp in a trial here back in early June. Market will be the best guide as to how she’s going, but she’s up to these I think.
Race 6. (14:45) Dixie Blossoms Special Achievement Handicap (78) 1800m
Can 1 Attention Run (Bet Now: $3.60) make it 2/2 in Australia? I say why not. Made her Australian debut over the mile at Randdwick weeks ago in what was survival of the fittest and despite being first up, she was strongest. So, either what she beat was no good, or is she handy? I tend to think it’s a mixture of both, more so the former, but with a stack of upside and up to 1800m, I’m keen to see how she goes.
I reckon 6 Missybeel (Bet Now: $9.00) should just about be ready fitness wise. Bjorn Baker trains this mare, who ran over 1550m at Canterbury last time when back in the run and making up decent ground late behind Light Exceed, her splits up to the 200m being strong. She should be ready fitness wise,
With the run under the belt, 7 Curata Princess (Bet Now: $101.00) is a mare I could include in wider multiples. She resumed over 1400m here four weeks ago on what was a very testing track and was never really a factor behind Notation, who has since been most unlucky at her next run, so the form reads alright, up to 1800m is a big tick, and stable ls flying. One for wider multiples.
Race 7. (15:25) Jockeys Reunion Handicap 1300m
Matty Smith has had a good run recently with imports and he’ll take the wrappings off another here in the shape of 5 Milk Man (Bet Now: $7.00), who makes his Australian debut. Former French galloper who placed in a Listed race two back, so the talent and touch of class is there despite the form on paper looking average re subsequent winners. The blinkers went on in the Warwick Farm trial last Friday and though his head carriage was awkward, he looked to move well. Keen to see how he goes and bear in mind at this meeting last year, a French import made a huge impression at his Australian debut – Avilius.
This does look a lovely race for the James Cummings trained 2 Haunted (Bet Now: $2.50). He comes through the Ramornie at Grafton where he was tardy away and that sealed his chances immediately. Thought he did a great job to get as close as he did, beaten 1.4L. He’s racing as if 1300m will suit and though that Ramornie form is looking suspect at the moment, he appears one of the hardest to beat here.
3 Boss Lane (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Ron Quinton trained veteran who looks suited back to this level. He ran in the Winter Stakes three weeks ago at Rosehill, a track he stinks at compared to Randwick, but I thought his run in defeat behind Eckstein wasn’t too bad. Back to his favourite track and back a little bit in depth, I reckon he’s a great knockout chance against these.
Race 8. (16:05) Industry Recognition Raceday Handicap (78) 1800m
7 Cyber Intervention (Bet Now: $2.40) looks the horse to beat for Joe Pride. He ran over 1500m at Rosehill three weeks ago where he got well off the speed but finished off strongly late to run second to Curragh, looking like a horse that wants further, which he gets here, and a tick over trial last week indicates he’s going well. 1800m at Randwick, third up…looks his race.
12 Matowi (Bet Now: $7.00) isn’t far off a win for Chris Waller. Had no luck early on in the prep but his last couple have been quite good. Bumped into Attorney two back at Canterbury before racing at this track/distance two weeks ago where he got back and found the line well when third to Dr Drill. The firmer tracks are really to his liking and despite the track having some give here, he’s a live chance.
For multiples I’d be including 8 The Bandit (Bet Now: $51.00). This bloke ran over the mile two weeks ago where he got a fair way back in the run but liked the way he found the line late behind impressive winner Pelethronius. He is much better on top of the ground, which is a little concern here, but his form from the Autumn certainly reads well enough for a race of this quality.
Race 9. (16:45) ATC Thank You Owners Handicap (78) 1400m
5 Jack’s Bar (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Kris Lees trained gelding who looked to struggle on the Randwick heavy two back before racing at Rosehill a few weeks ago where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a reasonable enough kick but just couldn’t quite finish it off when running third to Handle The Truth. That form reads well enough for this and with cover, he’ll be more effective. Just hope the track can dry up somewhat.
2 Thy Kingdom Come (Bet Now: $5.00) is a John Thompson trained galloper who should improve big time off his resumption at Rosehill three weeks back where he had a good sit off the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t quite get there and his condition gave out late, settling for fifth to Handle The Truth. Randwick 1400m second up looks a good set up and a win certainly wouldn’t shock.
Want to be very forgiving of 3 Slow Burn (Bet Now: $15.00) and her failure last time out. She was wide no cover on a decent clip and given that was her first run in a few weeks, she was entitled to knock up and did when down the track behind Bangkok. Had been trialling well prior to that so an improved showing certainly wouldn’t shock here. Just doesn’t want the track too wet.
