Chelmsford Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Chelmsford Stakes
Race 1. (11:40) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1200m
Favourites in a Highway are fraught with danger, but that said, 8 Opal Ridge (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS) looks beautifully placed. She was very good in defeat behind Troach two back at Rosehill before going to the Silver Shadow when wide throughout and was far from disgraced at Stakes level. Back to Highway grade, J Mac, good gate…all points to her.
4 Participator (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) would want to win impressively to warrant being considered a legitimate Kosciuszko contender. He resumed a fortnight back here where 1100m isn’t an ideal trip but really liked the way he worked home to finish second. Fitter, up to 1200m, he appeals.
2 Pure Fuego (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver back to Highway grade. He has been kept on ice, having not raced since July 17 at Rosehill when far from disgraced behind The Big Easy in what has been a red hot form race. Tick over trial win at Tamworth was strong and he maps ideally.
Race 2. (12:15) Midway (Bm72) 1800m
8 Bella Violet (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have returned in really good order. John Thompson trained mare that has been strong in two runs back from a break. Resumed at Kembla and was very good from near last. She then raced in a Midway here two weeks ago and worked to the line with purpose when fourth to Scorched Land. Like her up to 1800m and has more upside than most.
17 Remus (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a hard horse to catch but I think he is back on track. All three runs this time in have been quite good, the latest in the Midway a fortnight back where he was strong late, finishing third to Scorched Land. The 1800m is a query but the way he’s finding the line, it should be okay.
4 Our Bambino (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is suited back to this level. Ran a few weeks ago over 2400m in town and was comfortably held by Cadre Du Noir, but he was far from disgraced in defeat behind the Maher/Eustace horse. Back to 1800m and back to Midway grade, I think you should expect improvement.
Race 3. (12:50) World Gym Castlereagh (Bm78) 1100m
4 Jal Lei (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is flying for John O’Shea and if she can settle closer in the run, or be within range on the turn, good luck beating her. She was massive in defeat here a few weeks back after settling near last in an on pace domination, she worked home with real purpose late in the piece when third to Meg. Bursting to win one and she gets her chance.
13 Hoover Lucy (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is certainly capable with her best for Chris Waller. She has been given a good break, having not raced since Melbourne Cup Day at Randwick when third to The Crimson Idol, close up in defeat but she did let punters down. Given a good break, the trial was solid…watch the market.
3 Party For One (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Joe Pride trained mare that resumes after an Autumn prep where she teased to be a Stakes class horse but couldn’t quite get the win. Two trials leading in have been strong and these 4YO Mares, albeit short sample size, have come back very nicely.
Race 4. (13:25) City Tattersalls Club Cup 2400m
5 Through Irish Eyes (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) doesn’t want the rain to hit too hard because I do feel he is much better on a firmer deck, but he has the Maher/Eustace polish and will be strong late. That’s what he was at Flemington last time but had to settle for a very narrow second to Horrifying. Hard to beat I’d suggest.
10 Chalk Stream (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) can run a much improved race. He bombed the start fresh in the Premiers Cup and that sealed his fate. He actually did a really good job to get as close as he did. Trials indicated he had come back in good order, and he does have class when he’s right.
3 Realm Of Flowers (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is an improver at odds. She resumed in the Premiers Cup where she was back near last in the run and never really a threat, but didn’t mind the way she finished her race off. Fitter and up to 2400m, drawn well, I think she’ll run a cheeky race at aprice.
Race 5. (14:00) Concorde Stakes 1000m
1 Eduardo (Bet Now: $1.90) is the best 1000m horse in Australia and that should be confirmed with a win here. It’s simple with him. Back him at 1000m, potentially 1100m, but beyond 1200m, look elsewhere. He’s nine years of age, but he maintains a healthy zest for racing and his trials have been super, as they usually are. He should win.
4 Malkovich (Bet Now: $10.00) is a ripper for Bjorn Baker that resumes. He looks prepped right up for a big fresh performance with a couple of sharp trial wins under the belt. He normally does trial well, but this time around, he has looked a touch sharper. Not a noted fresh horse, but the signs are there that this is a target race.
3 Shelby Sixtysix… (Bet Now: $26.00) what a prep it was last time in. He went from being a busted at country grade to end up being a Group l winner. It’s not ridiculous to suggest he deserves a spot in The Everest because really, there is nothing out there busting the door down to get in, and he’s a Group l winner, plus his trials leading in indicate he’s ready to go. Knockout chance.
Race 6. (14:35) Furious Stakes 1200m
6 In Secret (Bet Now: $3.50) is a high quality filly for James Cummings that I am confident can bounce back into the winners list. I thought J Mac gave her a sore back fresh in the Silver Shadow. Had the back of the eventual winner, Zougotcha, but he probed to get wider and was held up while the winner darted up inside the pack and finished best. Should have won and confident she can atone.
5 Willinga Beast (Bet Now: $8.00) might be warming up for the Tea Rose and Flight Stakes but she is a filly with good talent. She resumed in the Silver Shadow and just lacked the change up speed to go with them but was good late. I reckon she wants 1400m/mile, but she has that class/quality factor.
4 Seven Veils (Bet Now: $17.00) looks to be on track. Ran two weeks back in the Silver Shadow where she was first up. Dragged back to near last from the gate and was never a winning factor but liked the way she finished her race off. Might want one more, but if they ride with more intent, I think she’ll be quite dangerous at odds.
Race 7. (15:15) Tramway Stakes 1400m
Good luck beating 1 Zaaki (Bet Now: $1.90). High class animal that resumes, with eyes towards the Cox Plate. He had a pretty good Autumn prep, highlighted by a win in the All Star Mile and a narrow second in the Queen Elizabeth. His trials leading in have been very good and in terms of class, he has a bit on these.
11 Icebath (Bet Now: $7.50) only runs well IMO. Not sure the race was run to suit fresh in the Winx Stakes but liked the way she finished her race off behind a star in Anamoe. Right down to 53kg and with genuine juice in the track, fitter, good record at Randwick…I think you have to have something on her at the odds.
6 Yonkers (Bet Now: $41.00) is another of these Waller horses that have had the Queensland prep and spell, and we have seen in recent weeks that those horses have measured up big time. He is better suited over further, but can sprint well fresh and his trials have been encouraging. Must for exotics.
Race 8. (15:55) Chelmsford Stakes 1600m
I’m a fan of 9 Surefire (Bet Now: $3.40) and confident he can stamp his Metropolitan/Cups credentials with a WFA win here. Resumed three weeks ago over 1400m in what was a truly run race before J Mac eased him off the fence and he let down with purpose to win and win impressively. Big win given he is a 2000m+ horse so he’s got the brilliance to measure up.
14 Benaud (Bet Now: $8.50) is ticking along beautifully for the Metropolitan and potentially even the Cups. He resumed in the Winx Stakes and was very good late nearer the inside. He was never a threat but worked home with purpose. He might want one more, but he does have quality about him.
10 No Compromise (Bet Now: $31.00) is on track for staying races I feel. Chris Waller trained stayer that was very good fresh three weeks ago at Rosehill, closing off nicely at the end without threatening behind Surefire. Likely wants another run, but the first up effort was quite encouraging.
Race 9. (16:35) Connection 2 Sports (Bm78) 1200m
The jockey is going like a busted but I have been quite taken by the trials of 3 Tiger Legend (Bet Now: $13.00), who is having his first proper prep for Les Bridge after formerly being with Tony Gollan. He brings with him some strong Queensland form and the two strong trial efforts indicate he’s ready to go, plus will love a drop of rain.
13 Arbitration (Bet Now: $6.50) has come back in really good order for James Cummings. Resumed with a strong win at the midweeks at Warwick Farm before going here two weeks ago where she was hailed as the winne when she loomed but some Bowman magic aboard Pizarro stopped that thought and that horse was too good. Hard fit now, she’ll take beating.
14 Hell I Am (Bet Now: $6.50) commands respect. Dominant win at the midweeks at Canterbury, suited by a strong mid race tempo, but even allowing for that, the win was impressive, and that was 1250m, so 1200m here should be fine, and he does have hard race fitness under the belt.
Race 10. (17:10) Ikon Services (Bm94) 1600m
13 Wicklow (Bet Now: $3.90) has been too good for them at 78 grade. If he’s going to be a Spring Carnival horse, he has to beat this lot, and I think he will. Lumped 60kg to win impressively at Rosehill last time, albeit in a weak race compared to this. But, he has the scope, the Waller polish and with good weight relief, I am in his corner to measure up.
8 Alcyone (Bet Now: $8.50) is an improver at odds. Impressive first up winner before going to the Premiers Cup Prelude where he was well fancied but didn’t finish it off and was on the plain side behind Lord Ardmore. Freshened up and with a tick over trial, I think he can easily bounce back.
9 Giannis (Bet Now: $16.00) is back on track. Paraded like he would need the run fresh and that’s how it panned out, but was very good late. He then went to the Murwillumbah Cup and ran a close up third after getting back. Hard fit now, ideal map…just wants this track to not get too wet.
