Ascot will play host to a nine race card this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Sheila Gwynne Classic 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Sheila Gwynne Classic
Race 1. (14:19) Belhus Racing Stables (rs1mw) 1000m
3 Gunmetal Grey (Bet Now: $6.00) has panels on these if she’s ready to go. Ross Price trained mare that resumes, having not raced since the Summer Carnival when far from disgraced in the Jungle races for the Mares. Two trials to prepare for her return and class wise, she has a bit on these. Should be resuming a winner.
4 Warm N Fuzzy (Bet Now: $2.70) is a key threat. Ashley Maley trained gelding that resumed here on April 6 when sitting outside the speed and in a two horse battle, he proved too strong late for Cross Statement. Back to 1000m I find interesting, but gets a suck run and the depth is near non existent for a Saturday metro race.
5 Critical Altitude (Bet Now: $3.60) is a mare for Neville Parnham that will jump on the bunny and give a sight. Tough on speed win at this track/distance on Good Friday, fending them off late despite getting the staggers. The small field and lack of quality helps her cause, she’s hard fit and in form.
Race 2. (14:56) Glenroy Chaff Plate 1200m
3 Sweep The Leg (Bet Now: $5.00) to bounce back. I’d be very forgiving of his run last start in the Sires given it was more or less a barrier trial, and given he was back in the run, he failed to fire a shot. Debut run was super and back to 1200m, back in grade/depth, I think he can bounce back.
1 Demolish (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Neville Parnham trained juvenile that is on the quick back up after racing here on Monday when just off the speed and didn’t stop chasing in a good effort behind a smart juvenile in Tiffany Street. I think that form reads well for what appears a winnable race.
11 Hot Chatter (Bet Now: $26.00) is a daughter of Snippetson on debut for Darren Taylor. This girl has been well educated for start one, with three preps under the belt, the latest prep here producing just one trial and looked to go about her business well. Well grounded to measure up on debut.
Race 3. (15:36) Morley Growers Market (bm62+) 1200m
4 Success Play (Bet Now: $7.00) looks the map horse. On the seven day back up after racing over 1400m here last Saturday when wide no cover on speed and fought on bravely when fourth. He’ll get run of the race from gate one and back to 1200m should be no issue. Tricky race, but happy to be in his corner.
7 Hardly Ever (Bet Now: $2.00) should love the rise to 1200m. Resumed over 1000m here two weeks ago and she just found the five furlongs too sharp, but was warming to the task late in a good effort when third. I love her up to 1200m and she’ll be dangerous if she’s within range on the turn.
1 Featherweight (Bet Now: $8.50) is in with a shout for Dan Morton. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where he didn’t quite get the rub of the green in the straight when having something to offer. I reckon with clear air, he’ll be dangerous. Just the inside gate could be tricky.
Race 4. (16:14) Tabtouch-westspeed Plat-rs0ly 1600m
Fitter with a significant jockey upgrade, I am in the corner of 2 Pambella (Bet Now: $3.90). Ran over this track/distance last Saturday and she was a real eye catcher from off the speed when fourth to Mojo Rhythm, beaten a half length in a blanket finish. Gate one with Chris Parnham taking over, she’ll do me.
1 Cuban Twist (Bet Now: $5.00) has a good second up record and I think can be dangerous. Resumed two weeks ago over 1500m here when outside the speed and looked to be trucking, but couldn’t quite finish it off and ran out of condition when fourth. Good second up record, she commands respect.
3 Arnie’s Boy (Bet Now: $17.00) can be an improver at odds. Resumed in the same race that Cuban Twist contested. He was wide no cover on speed and tried hard, but condition just gave way late in a total forgive. I reckon he’s a Provincial class horse, but he could sneak a first four spot with a more economical run.
Race 5. (16:50) Mt Hallowell - Waroa Day-bm72+ 1800m
3 Downforce (Bet Now: $2.60) has been up forever it seems like, but gee he’s racing well. Neville Parnham trained gelding that was a query at the mile once upon a time but he ran over the trip here two weeks ago and he gave them a spanking in such an impressive display, racing like 1800m will be no issue. Hard to beat.
2 Majinika (Bet Now: $6.00) commands respect. He ran in the Downforce race mentioned above, and I loved the way he closed his race off, finishing a solid third, which followed an impressive Narrogin Cup triumph. Must be stable confidence to go with a senior rider and not a claiming apprentice.
Back to 1800m I do like for 6 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $9.50). Ran over 2100m last start in the Albany Cup and looked the winner when presented, but couldn’t quite finish the race off anf tired late when third to Tena Koutou. Back in trip is a big tick and is a knockout chance.
Race 6. (17:30) Crown Perth (bm66+) 1200m
9 Sneaky Chance (Bet Now: $2.50) on top. As the season gets closer to the end, three year olds taking on older horses are dynamite, and this filly comes here in red hot form, winning 3/3 this time in, the latest being over 1000m here two weeks ago. Ridden cold, she can rattle off a late split and with that sort of ride, she’ll be effective at 1200m.
5 Cross Statement (Bet Now: $4.80) is knocking on the door to win. Jim Taylor trained four year old that has been runner up in both runs this time in, the latest being a fortnight back here when on speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off when beaten narrowly by Our Boy Dylan. Unbeaten third up, and given he was nominated in a couple of races for this meeting, there is intent in running here.
2 Material Witness (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing really well for Adam Durrant. The knock with him is that he saves his best for the straight track at Pinjarra. His recent runs have come here and he has been pretty good without winning, closing off with some level of purpose. Not sure he wins, but a first four threat.
Race 7. (18:08) Sheila Gwynne Classic 1400m
8 Buzzoom (Bet Now: $2.00) for me. Ran in the Marjorie Charleson on Good Friday and I just think she was ridden a pair too close in the run for a filly that loves to sit back and launch late. She settled closer, hit the front and was run down late by Amasenus. I reckon with a cold ride, she can finish over the top.
4 Amasenus (Bet Now: $3.50) is a ripping mare for Simon Miller that caused a boilover in the Marjorie Charleson, sititng back in the small field before coming wider and launching late to nab Buzzoom, getting the race run to suit. Just starting to creep up in the weights, but she’s very genuine.
3 Cryptic Love (Bet Now: $7.50) should love the rise to 1400m. Ran over 1000m here two weeks ago and was really warming to the task late in the piece when a narrow fourth to a bonny mare in Express Time. Saves her best for this track/distance and if the tempo is gentle, I think she’ll be effective.
Race 8. (18:38) Tabtouch-better Your Bet-bm66+ 1600m
6 Otheroneson (Bet Now: $1.65) should win, provided he does everything right. He should have won here two weeks ago when launching late, but he wanted to shift in under pressure and threw the race away. Gate one, he’ll get run of the race, and hopefully can use the rail to guide him to straighten him up.
7 Albukhturi (Bet Now: $13.00) has an awful winning strike rate, but he’s an honest animal that is around the mark more often than not. Ran over 1500m here on Good Friday and I thought had his chance. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Pennys Afield. Blinkers back on, potentially to sharpen him up, and also potentially as a last resort.
Best version of 4 Gunnago (Bet Now: $67.00) is certainly capable. He resumed behind Kia Ora Star over 1400m here two weeks back and failed to fire a shot in a disappointing return, but that’s normally how he runs fresh. Gets better as the prep goes, so may need one more, but drawn soft with the claim, he’s a sneaky first four chance at his best.
Race 9. (19:10) Amelia Park (ra1mw) 1400m
4 My Mate (Bet Now: $4.60) is a little query at 1400m but the soft gate should ensure he’ll be okay at it. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago where he had the suck run in transit and was there to threaten but he had no answers for Mood Swings, who would be odds on in a race like this. The form stacks up well, he maps well, Lucy Warwick is flying…he’s the pony to beat.
1 Elafella (Bet Now: $11.00) has good upside to come for Lindsey Smith and comes into this as a last start winner, getting the job done from the front at this track/distance on Good Friday. There is more depth to this, but he’ll slide forward and with improvement to come, is hard to run down.
7 Dash Doll (Bet Now: $7.50) is a knockout hope. She was ridden really poorly I thought behind Elafella in the race mentioned above. That horse got complete control in front with Kate Witten on this mare applying no pressure and gifting the race to Elafella. I reckon with a conservative steer, she can launch late.
