A really strong nine race card has been assembled for Caulfield on Saturday with some good depth right across the board. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:45) Keno Let's Play Handicap 1200m
If he can overcome the draw, I think 7 Tony Nicconi (Bet Now: $4.80) goes very close to winning. The Hayes/Dabernig team train this colt, who is on debut and has really looked the part in a couple of Flemington jump outs leading up to this prep. Hopefully gets three wide cover and launches at them late. Looks above average.
1 Beerz With Clint (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Clinton McDonald trained son of Written Tycoon who debuted at Mornington and I thought his effort was a ripper when second to Cavalini in a race dominated by those on speed in an excellent debut. On his home track now but is another that has to contend with an awkward draw.
3 Crisis Time (Bet Now: $17.00) is a son of Smart Missile on debut for the Corstens team. I think he’ll need more time, but there looks to be a decent engine under the hood. Latest jump out saw him lead all the way and did it rather comfortably under Baster, who remains on here, which is a good sign. Good gate helps.
Race 2. (12:20) Keno Classic Handicap (78) 1600m
8 Mantastic (Bet Now: $3.30) is a former French galloper for the Darren Weir team and OTI who debuted in Australia three weeks back at Flemington and I thought he was one of the runs of the day, working home strongly to run second to Barthelona, who franked the form last Saturday. Has to go in as one of the hardest to beat.
This looks the race of the day at Caulfield with a couple of future blacktype performers stepping out, most notably 3 Al Galayel (Bet Now: $2.30) for Ciaron Maher. Former UK galloper who made his Australian debut over the Sandown mile where he was hard in the market and produced a brilliant finishing burst to win. Can only improve off that…little concern he might want further, but he looks to have class.
10 All Out Love (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained gelding who could improve. Asked to do too much two back at Bendigo behind Gimme Strength before racing last Saturday at Flemington where he again got too far back behind Silentz. This race looks quite strong, but I like he is on the back up and hopefully he can get cover and a drag up.
Race 3. (12:55) Keno Heads Or Tails Handicap 2200m
6 Nothin’ Leica High (Bet Now: $9.00) on top in a nothing race. This bloke has been up a fair while for Robbie Griffiths but is still racing in okay form. Good from the back two starts ago at Sandown before getting no luck last time in the Masculino race at Flemington. Wide gate, he should get clear running and I think away from the inside will be the A1 spot.
5 Borella (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a handy son of Pierro for Mick Price who bounced back to winning ways last time out at the midweeks at Sale where Nolen gave him a sweet steer from the wide gate and he put them away quite quickly and was dominant in winning. 2000m looks no issue and I thin he can run well on his home track.
Very interested to see how 9 High Dude (Bet Now: $17.00) goes. Tough win two back over 2100m at Gosford before racing over 2000m at Randwick where he really struggled on the bog surface behind stablemate Jolly Honour. Back on top of the ground now, and was scratched from Canterbury on Wednesday in preference for this.
Race 4. (13:30) Keno Kiwkpik Handicap 1100m
This race does appear to evolve around 1 Summer Sham (Bet Now: $3.80) and where she is at fitness wise, because if she’s right, she should be beating this field. Quality filly for Danny O’Brien who is resuming after a fab start to the career in the Summer/Autumn with a four run prep, with three wins from four outings, including the Angus Armanasco, before failing in the Kewney. Recent Flemington jump out was very good…looks ready but market will tell you.
15 Suger Baby (Bet Now: $14.00) is a daughter of Turffontein for the Greg Eurell team who had trialled well prior to resuming at Sale where she looked to have a relatively good run near the speed and once McNeil got her clear air, she loomed, hit the front and looked home, but was nabbed late by One Hot Dane. Should come on from that and her form last prep reads pretty well.
6 Lady Magnus (Bet Now: $23.00) is definitely one to watch. Chris Calthorpe trains this filly who is first up here after a fab opening prep to kick off the career. Won the two races but did contest some pretty strong races behind high class types such as Summer Sham and Tulip. No trials or jump outs, but she was electric on debut last time.
Race 5. (14:05) Keno Heads Or Tails Margins Handicap (90) 1200m
Concede Rillito is very likeable, but I don’t mind the odds of 12 Bellaria (Bet Now: $12.00) here for the Weir team. She lumped 60kg when resuming first up at Geelong and didn’t turn it up at all when taking ground off Run Gypsy Run in a close go to the line. She has run well in town before, maps well, tumbles 6kg in weight…I think she only runs well.
6 Mamzelle Tess (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beauty for the Corstens team. Doesn’t win out of turn but gee she’ll run an honest race for you and that was the case last start in the Proud Miss at Morphettville where she ran a close up third to She’s So High. Back to this level, I think she can more than hold her own here. Definite winning chance.
9 Written Era (Bet Now: $11.00) is the unknown. She’s burned many holes in my pocket but I think the Purcell team have gone to the drawing board and start again. They’ve tried to get her to be a 1300m, perhaps a 1400m horse, but she just doesn’t run it. Fast run 1200m looks an ideal set up and I think she can be a big improver.
Race 6. (14:45) Keno Bonus Handicap 1800m
Keen to butter up on 11 Sixties Groove (Bet Now: $4.80). Hearing Darren Weir talk about this horse, he’s got a very good opinion of him, but has said that he has been ridden poorly in both runs for the stable, both coming at the Valley. The key to this horse is riding him stone cold and if that eventuates, he’ll take some beating.
6 My Nordic Hero (Bet Now: $3.70) had been bursting to win a race in Australia and it finally came a fortnight back over the 2040m at the Valley when given a peach by Michael Walker and proving too good for them, probably out of tickets late also, so back to 1800m looks ideal and he should get the lovely drag up via Onpicalo.
1 Pacodali (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Darren Weir trained galloper who had late backing when resuming in the Swan Hill Cup and despite having gate one and 59.5kg, he ran a beauty in defeat behind Victory Downs. Has a really good second up record, a touch of class and up to 1800m, he should be a definite threat.
Race 7. (15:25) Keno Replay Handicap 1400m
Very interesting to see what 12 Greyworm (Bet Now: $8.50) does here. He was heavily backed for Mick Kent when debuting a few Mondays back at Mornington and the bets were landed as he led all the way and was really impressive in doing so, despite the aid of on pace bias. Had change up speed when asked and I think he can measure up.
3 Usain Bowler (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of So You Think for the John Sadler team who is a fortnight between runs since racing at the Valley where he came with a well timed run under Mick Dee to nail the in form Grey Shadow near the peg. On breeding, he should eat up 1400m and has upside. Very likeable.
8 Elite Drake (Bet Now: $9.00) is a beauty for Alisa Hinch and I think he can measure up for sure. Heavily backed when breaking the maiden status two back at Wangaratta, beating home subsequent winner Legale, before going to Echuca last Wednesday and was impressive on speed again. The way he is going, you just have to include him.
Race 8. (16:05) Keno Superplay Handicap (84) 1400m
9 Rib Eye (Bet Now: $9.50) is a third up specialist and he continued that good trend last time out at the Valley behind Jacquinot Bay, sitting back off the pace and working home strongly to run second to the evergreen Hayes/Dabernig runner. He’s looking ready to win and ticks alot of boxes. Got the right form and should take some beating.
3 Malaise (Bet Now: $3.80) is a ripper for James Cummings who should seriously be respected. Resumed over 1200m at the Valley a fortnight back and worked home pretty well I thought when third to Widgee Turf. He has a pretty solid second up record and loves racing at 1400m so he ticks a few boxes here.
1 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $34.00) is a quality stayer who resumes for Darren Weir. He hasn’t raced since the Spring Carnival where he tried to qualify for the Melbourne Cup via the Lexus but was outclassed behind Cismontane. He can sprint well fresh and looked solid enough to my eye despite being well down the track in a recent Tatura trial.
Race 9. (16:40) Keno Jackpots Handicap (84) 1200m
Pretty keen that 6 Call Me Handsome (Bet Now: $7.50) can resume with a win or close to it. Peter Gelagotis trains this gelding, who who had a really good opening prep in Australia, winning three races and showing good promise. Really like what I saw in a recent Cranbourne jump out and to my eye he’s ready to go.
5 Wise Hero (Bet Now: $8.00) looks a clear threat. John Price trains this gelding, who was in need of the run first up here before going to the Valley three weeks ago where I thought Lane rode a negative race and gave the horse little to no chance behind Tildy Lad. Third up at the Caulfield 1200m, no excuses for mine.
If they go hard in front here, look for 2 Got The Goss (Bet Now: $23.00) to be storming home. This bloke has done a ripping job since being sent to the Weir team. Ran in the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill last time out and worked home strongly to run third to the low flying Inn Keeper. He’s lethal on top of the ground, so if we get a good track, he’s a clear threat.
