Feature racing returns to Canterbury this Saturday with the nine race program highlighted by the $150,000 Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m). The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:40) : TAB Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 10 From Within (Bet Now: $1.55) is a sharp looking for filly for the Waller stable that is on debut here. She has been seen in public twice in readiness for her debut, and in both trials she has won impressively. First trial was run in slow but the second and latest was much sharper and she did it comfortably. She can measure up here for sure.
Big Danger: 1 Chauffeur (Bet Now: $4.20) is a well bred colt that is into the Magic Millions already but will use this as a tune up. He debuted in that race mentioned above where he looked to do a bit wrong in the straight but once he got clear running near the fence and got his mind on the job, he finished off quite strongly. Not sure how comfortable he will be around Canterbury, but he has winning form on the board.
Long Shot: 3 All Too Huying (Bet Now: $7.00) has the hard race fitness on his side and shouldn’t be underestimated here. He ran over 1200m at Rosehill last Saturday where he sat off the speed in the run and chased hard all the way but was no match late for impressive winner Falconic. Back to 1100m looks ideal, and he has the race experience.
Race Two (13:20) : Schweppes Handicap (72) 1100m:
Back Me: 3 Fanning (Bet Now: $21.00) put together a couple of impressive wins at the provincials before coming here where he attempted to lead all the way but just felt the pinch late on the bog track behind Deploy. Firmer surface should aid his cause, as should the rise up 1200m and he does appear to map quite well.
Big Danger: 2 Super Too (Bet Now: $2.30) is one of the class runners engaged here and has to rate very highly. She hasn’t raced since Oaks Day down the straight where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick but was nabbed late by star filly Spright. Trial since was very good and though she did have the hiccup prior to the Inglis Sprint, I’m still keen on her chances.
Long Shot: 7 Spending To Win, (Bet Now: $10.00) I doubt will win this, but he just about a lock for the Magic Millions Maiden. He resumes here for Team Snowden after a really encouraging opening prep in the Winter, which yielded three placings behind Guard Of Honour, Hair Trigger and Pipeline respectively. Trial win was solid enough and he should be working home strongly.
Race Three (13:55) : New Years Eve Handicap (72) 1250m:
Back Me: 5 My True Love (Bet Now: $3.50) for me here, and with some confidence. She absolutely spanked them in her maiden win two back at Hawkesbury before backing that up at Warwick Farm where she led all the way under Josh Parr. Time was nothing fancy, but she was strong and held them comfortably. She will more than likely cop pressure here, but I am more than happy to be in her corner.
Big Danger: 4 Improvement (Bet Now: $4.80) is an above average filly for Gary Portelli that returns to Canterbury after doing the job impressively at her past two starts, both of which have come here, starting off over 1200m before coming back to 1100m and beating up the older mares. That’s a big tick, especially when she is now dropping back to her own age/sex. Hard to beat.
Long Shot: 9 Bold Carlota (Bet Now: $11.00) came with a well timed run to win on debut at Beaumont-Newcastle before going to Warwick Farm where she got back in a slowly run race yet finished off nicely late behind My True Love. Needs a few things to go in her favour in order to turn the tables, but she looks a likely type.
Race Four (14:30) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1250m:
Back Me: 1 Beau Tirage (Bet Now: $5.50) is a nippy customer from Canberra who ran over 1000m at Goulburn a tick over three weeks back where he was far from disgraced when second to Aussie James. 1250m would normally be a worry, but I think at Canterbury, that should be alright for him. Happy to be in his corner.
Big Danger: 9 Dramatico (Bet Now: $19.00) failed in a Rosehill Highway behind Delightful Feeling before a midfield effort at Nowra behind Pennington. Jury was out on whether or not she had enough but she put that theory to bed with a spank job of her rivals at Moruya. The smaller/tighter track should suit her, as should the drop to 1250m.
Long Shot: 13 Dalmatia Prince (Bet Now: $13.00) is a handy three year old colt that is first up for the Todd Howlett stable. His opening prep came during the Winter and he ran quite well I thought in several races, a couple of which had some depth to them, including a second to Shanakee at Scone, who has performed well in Brisbane. Newcastle trial was encouraging and first up at 1250m looks suitable.
Race Five (15:05) : #theraces Handicap (78) 1900m:
Back Me: 9 Tradtri (Bet Now: $15.00) is a nine year old, so you could be forgiven for thinking he is here to make up the numbers, but I think he is one of the hardest to beat here. He ran over this track/distance last time out where he was ridden a treat on speed by McEvoy and the horse toughed it out strongly to lead all the way and land some nice bets at odds. Should roll to the front here, set a genuine tempo and give them something to chase.
Big Danger: 8 Obsidian (Bet Now: $4.80) also comes through the Kingsguard race and I thought his effort was equal of that by Burning Energy given he was back in the run and did make really good ground late. Got solid form at this track/distance from the Winter, and being third up here, he should have upside and is nearing peak fitness.
Long Shot: 4 Burning Energy (Bet Now: $8.00) led all the way to win the Mudgee Cup two back before racing over the Warwick Farm mile last Wednesday where he had a nice sit in a midfield spot before being wound up and finishing his race off nicely when third to the in form Hawkes galloper Kingsguard. Beyond the mile for the first time here, but gives the impression he will handle it.
Race Six (15:40) : TAB Rewards Handicap (93) 1550m:
Back Me: 8 Redoutable Heart (Bet Now: $2.70) is a horse in really good form at the moment for the Chris Waller yard. He was given a peach from Shinn to win two back at Rosehill before racing at Randwick a fortnight back where he lumped the big weight and was under pressure before the turn but picked up strongly late to run a close up third to Moher. Got a solid record at Canterbury and should be hard fit.
Big Danger: 6 Duca Valentinois (Bet Now: $6.50) drops a fair bit in depth after racing in the Villiers last time out where he was kept quite safe in the market but just couldn’t let down on the soft track when a tick over three lengths away from Sense Of Occasion. Bolted up in his lone start at Canterbury and I think a firmer track/back to 1550m are two big ticks.
Long Shot: 10 Hetty Heights (Bet Now: $6.50) is a mare who is knocking on the door to win a race and she just about gets her chance here. She ran over 1200m at Randwick last time out where she got a long way back in the run but finished off her race with real purpose when running fourth to Kinsachi. Stepping up to 1550m looks ideal, right down in the weights and has upside/fresh legs.
Race Seven (16:20) : Canterbury Classic 1200m:
Back Me: 2 Big Money (Bet Now: $15.00) resumed in the George Moore and for a few strides there he looked as if he was going to ping and be right in the mix, but his fitness and condition gave out over the final furlong and he dropped away to run seventh. He is a class animal who has a very good second up record, he will love the hot speed and he will be strong late.
Big Danger: 1 Ball Of Muscle (Bet Now: $5.50) is the clear class runner engaged here and has to be respected enormously. Went within a lip of beating subsequent Group l winner Takedown fresh before substandard efforts in two Melbourne runs. Freshened up and looked to trial in outstanding fashion recently at Warwick Farm. Just needs to overcome the draw to be a contender.
Long Shot: 10 I Am Zelady (Bet Now: $11.00) is a talented mare that resumes for the Joe Pride stable. She raced twice during the early part of the Winter and failed to fire, so Pride spelled with an eye towards the Magic Millions again, where she bolted up earlier in the year. Trials leading in have been fantastic and she does have a strong fresh record.
Race Eight (17:00) :Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 10 Deploy (Bet Now: $6.50) is a beautifully bred gelding that looks to be set for a really good prep. Resumed over 1100m here on December 16 on a heavy track where he was backed as if unbeatable and the punters got it absolutely spot on as he had the nice sit off the speed before being clicked into gear and he just bolted in. Can only see upside given he only had one soft trial leading in. Clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: 7 Choice We Had (Bet Now: $8.50) has been given a six week freshen up since coming with a well timed run to win over 1400m at Rosehill. He had a soft trip near the fence but looked to be really struggling before the turn but once he balanced up and got a sniff of clear air, gee he let down powerfully and was strong. Back to 1200m is some query, but I won’t argue with the methods of Team Snowden.
Long Shot: 11 Noble Joey (Bet Now: $12.00) is a little beauty for Team Price who is never far away from the thick end of the prize. He ran in that messy Rosehill race won by Isorich where he sat on speed and fought on really strongly to be beaten just under a length in fourth spot. Gets really good map favours here I think and he’ll take some beating.
Race Nine (17:40) : ATC Handicap (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 13 Raiment (Bet Now: $2.25) resumed over 1250m here on a bog track under the lights and she was just so impressive to the eye, gliding over the heavy surface and when clicked up by Doyle, she just exploded and won with a touch of class and authority. Go back to last prep and she had form around Redouble and Foxplay. That reads well for this.
Big Danger: 12 Roeinda (Bet Now: $9.00) will love the drop back to 1200m after racing over 1400m at Rosehill last start where she attempted to lead all the way and she did give a kick but just felt the pinch late when third to Girl Sunday in a race where the form held up okay last Saturday. Got some really good form at Canterbury, she’s hard fit, in form and as I said, back 200m in trip is ideal.
Long Shot: If they go silly in front, then a horse like 5 Fiftyshadesofgrey (Bet Now: $21.00) comes right into play. Her two runs this time in have been just fair without setting the world on fire, but from all reports, she has been working brilliantly over the past week or so, largely due to the blinkers, and they are on raceday for the first time here.
BEST BET: Race Nine Number 13 Raiment
NEXT BEST: Race Eight Number 10 Deploy
VALUE: Race Seven Number 2 Big Money
