‘The Masters’ at Ascot wraps up this Saturday with the third and final Group l of the Carnival, along with the final Group l of the 2021 calendar year, the Kingston Town Classic (1800m), the feature race on the card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:05) TOURISM WA TROPHY 1000m
6 Costume Party (Bet Now: $4.50) on top but not with a great deal of confidence. Luke Fernie trained filly that debuted over 1000m where she took on three rivals and took care of them comfortably. Visually, good, but the time was horrendous relative to the meeting, so that’s the knock, but she has race experience and it was winning experience.
8 Ciao Luna (Bet Now: $8.50) looks the pick of the first starters. This filly looked sharp in a couple of trials over 400m at Belmont for Dion Luciani. She’s now with Roy Rogers, so not sure what happened there but good lead that the stable finds Pike to ride for start one.
9 Hotorio (Bet Now: $34.00) will need luck from the gate but she looks to have talent for David Harrison. On debut off the back of two trials, both coming at Lark Hill. Nothing to get too excited about but enough to suggest she can be competitive here. Just needs luck from the draw.
Race 2. (15:45) TABTOUCH HANDICAP 1200m
6 Vadette De Star (Bet Now: $4.20) is flying for Simon Miller. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago and just got a mile out of her ground from the wide gate but loved the way she found the line late behind La Farola, clocking some fast late splits. If she can sit a pair or two closer in the run, she’ll take beating.
The Gangemi camp had Written Matter nominated, who looked a near good thing on paper, so interesting that they run 4 Mercanto (Bet Now: $3.70) instead. He also ran in the La Farola race mentioned above and was quite good from the back as well. Tricky draw to overcome, but prior to that, he put together a couple of sharp wins.
3 Grand Design (Bet Now: $26.00) is a proven city performer who is a little query at 1200m but the soft gate with Rawiller steering looks a good set up to offset that. Ran over 1100m at Albany last start when on speed and just felt the pinch late. With an economical run in transit, 1200m should be okay.
Race 3. (16:25) AMELIA PARK HANDICAP 1100m
4 Written Matter (Bet Now: $2.35) looks a smart four year old for the Gangemi camp. Market wanted him when he resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago and under a lovely steer from CJP, he was much too good for his rivals. Good test here, but confident he measures up.
He hasn’t won in a long time but 9 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $6.00) is flying and with the key booking of Pike, he’ll go close. Three weeks between runs since a very good effort behind The Front Bar, who looks Stakes class. Inside gate, key jockey booking, in form…he’ll take beating.
2 Kenyluck (Bet Now: $13.00) is flying this time in and deserves a crack in town. 3/3 this time in, all three coming at Geraldton where sustained speed from the front has come to the fore. This’ll be a good test for him to see if he’s indeed a metro horse or country class. He’ll give himself every chance.
Race 4. (17:05) TOUR EDGE HANDICAP 2200m
5 Conquered Zone (Bet Now: $9.00) is racing like he will eat up 2200m for Team Williams. Ran over 1800m here two weeks ago and was very good from off the speed when a narrow second to Expressionist. Has won up to 2000m but off last run, he should appreciate the rise in trip and is hard to beat.
4 Reliable Star (Bet Now: $1.70) is knocking on the door to win. Has been close up her past couple and for a few strides has looked the winner each time, but has found Pure Devotion too good on each occasion. She’s hard fit now and back slightly in grade/depth, she looks well placed.
2 Black Shadow (Bet Now: $4.60) is probably on trial for a crack at the Perth Cup. A win here and he probably earns a crack at a lead up, or do they just stick to benchmark races. Good behind Pure Devotion last time and that form clearly reads well for a race like this.
Race 5. (17:45) A.J. SCAHILL STAKES 1400m
6 Comfort Me (Bet Now: $2.90) looks to pick himself. He’s flying for Rhys Radford, which was confirmed two weeks ago when a very good second in the Railway behind Western Empire, which is the best WA form going around. If that hasn’t busted him, he wins this.
4 Stageman (Bet Now: $3.80) is on the seven day back up for Adam Durrant after racing last Saturday in the Winterbottom where he was excellent from near last in the run behind Graceful Girl. The way he races, 1400m should be ideal so keen to see how he goes at the trip.
2 Vital Silver (Bet Now: $19.00) is third up and should just about be at peak fitness. He had a suck run behind the speed in the Carbine Club and was there to win but couldn’t quite the job done when a close up third. Not sure he can beat this lot but a first four contender.
Race 6. (18:25) LEE STEERE CLASSIC 1400m
8 Real Danger (Bet Now: $5.00) should be suited back up to 1400m. Thought the 1400m saw her out in the Burgess Queen but I think it’s that she was ridden too warm, no fault of McGruddy given she had gate one. Pike was on in the Placid Ark, she drew wide so they rode cold and she savaged the line in a good effort. Off that, 1400m here should be fine.
1 Liwa (Bet Now: $4.80) is in a similar boat to Real Danger. I thought 1400m in the Burgess Queen was too far, but she was ridden too warm. Rode her cold in the Placid Ark and the end result was a fast finishing and close up second to Flying Missile. If she can reproduce that here, 1400m is okay.
The Casey camp also had Ain’t No Other Man nominated for this race, but go with the sole rep in 6 Fatale Femme (Bet Now: $23.00). She was also ridden with patience in the Placid Ark and found the line strongly when third to Flying Missile. I thought she was just a 1000m speedy squib but this prep, she’s racing as if 1400m will suit.
Race 7. (19:05) JUNGLE DAWN CLASSIC 1400m
9 Bright Diamond (Bet Now: $3.10) should eat up the 1400m here for Team Williams. She has an awful racing pattern but no denying the talent under the hood she has. Ran in the Jungle Mist where it was bad Pike on display, riding her very negative, relying on luck, and it just didn’t pan out for her. Love her up in trip and if she gets clear air, I think she wins.
Bless the negative ride on Bright Diamond in the Jungle Mist because no doubt it handed the race to 4 Angelic Miss (Bet Now: $6.00), who had clear air out wide, full momentum and an electric finale to win. The query with her has to be 1400m, but given how well she’s racing, she deserves a look at it.
1 Bam’s On Fire (Bet Now: $13.00) hasn’t set the world on fire in some time but I must say, her Jungle Mist run was very encouraging. Got a fair way back after getting dragged from the wide gate but loved the way she closed off. If she can do that while sitting closer in the run, she’ll be dangerous.
Race 8. (19:45) KINGSTON TOWN CLASSIC 1800m
7 Western Empire (Bet Now: $1.30) just picks himself here. No prizes for finding him. Stunning winner of the Railway two weeks ago and yes, he beat up on the locals with no raiders from the East, but times don’t lie and he smashed the clock, winning like an elite Group l horse. Barring bad luck, he’ll win this and hopefully the East can see him in 2022 in the big races.
1 Regal Power (Bet Now: $9.00) is the only threat, if there is one. He has been kept on ice with this race as the main target. Jury has been out on him after his All Star Mile win last year, but his two runs this prep have been excellent, the latest in the Lee Steere when clocking great late splits. At his best, he could challenge Western Empire. He is racing well…but I don’t think it’s enough to beat him.
6 Notorious One (Bet Now: $27.00) gets CJP back aboard and I think that is a big tick. He is one of the stronger riders and I think having a rider that is more about balance in Shaun O’Donnell was against him in the Railway. To me, the horse looks a bludger who needs someone to stand over him and Johnston-Porter is the rider for that.
Race 9. (20:20) CROWN PERTH HANDICAP 1600m
Back to the mile I find interesting with 2 Expressionist (Bet Now: $3.50) but he is a last start Saturday metro winner. That came over 1800m here two weeks ago when given an absolute peach by Pike and that was the difference between winning and losing. I think the mile is a positive and should prove hard to beat here.
9 Memorable Miss (Bet Now: $6.00) should love the rise to 1600m. She spotted them a decent start over 1300m at Belmont last time but she really surged hard late under Pike to get the win. Off that, the extra 300m looks ideal. Just doesn’t want to start too much head start.
1 Downforce (Bet Now: $12.00), for the first time in ages, is placed to advantage. He finds a 1MW after racing in strong rating races where he hasn’t been winning but has been far from disgraced. Could I back him to win? No, but he is certainly good enough to take this out.
