The best race for juveniles in WA is the Karrakatta Plate and the time honoured 1200m contest highlights a nine race card at Ascot on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Karrakatta Plate 🏆: View the Field for the Karrakatta Plate
Race 1. (15:19) SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1100M
1 Cliffs Of Comfort (Bet Now: $2.25) is on top. Son of Canford Cliffs for the Pearce camp that is 2/2 to start his career. Has led throughout each time, starting with a Bunbury maiden before stepping up to 1200m here two weeks where he was far too good for the very much above average Laverrod. That form clearly reads well for this and back to 1100m is no issue.
2 Tommy Blue (Bet Now: $2.80) is the interesting runner. Four weeks between runs since running last in a field of four over 1400m here where she was on speed as a notable drifter in betting and ran accordingly, but admittedly, the winner Talladega is smart. Back to 1100m with fresh legs I do like and good lead that Pike is booked.
9 Express Time (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Neville Parnham trained filly that is second up from a spell. Resumed over 1000m here at the midweeks on March 18 and despite being a beaten odds on pop, the run had good merit to it after doing work from a wide gate to get on speed. Just couldn’t quite see it through. Fitter and up to 1100m I like. Just depends where she gets to from the gate, potentially gets the drag over via Cliffs Of Comfort.
Race 2. (15:59) CROWN PERTH HANDICAP 1400M
Looks a lovely race for 3 Eurasia (Bet Now: $4.00), who has been up a little while for Steve Wolfe but continues to race very well. Heavily backed when racing over 1400m at Bunbury last time and under a confident steer from Harvey, the son of Eurozone drew clear late and won well. Proven city performer and good lead that Harvey remains on. Happy to be in his corner.
Back to 1400m is interesting with 5 Divide The Sea (Bet Now: $11.00), who was on the Derby path, but after the JC Roberts, that plan has been aborted. That run, he seemingly got every chance but just didn’t run the trip out. This looks more his level and more his distance range. Can see him getting three wide cover from the gate and being strong at the end.
He’s on the seven day back up, is jumping from a maiden straight to 3YO company and the time was nothing flash, but I thought there was a bit of quality about the way 9 Last Of The Line (Bet Now: $3.30) put them away to win last week. Did he beat much? I’m saying no, but the way he put them away and drew clear was impressive and think he can measure up.
Race 3. (16:39) WESTSPEED PLATINUM HCP 1400M
Peter Fernie rarely gets it wrong when he brings them to town so I’ll take a chance with 6 Indian Chant (Bet Now: $4.80), who has done a great job in his first prep for the new stable after formerly being with David Harrison. Loved the way he charged to the line in winning at Kalgoorlie, defying a notable betting drift and clocking some of the better late splits of the meeting. Confident he measures up.
7 Black Missile (Bet Now: $21.00) is flying for Samantha Faithfull. Lightly raced gelding that hasn’t done much wrong in his eight career outings, winning his past two at Albany in impressive fashion. He takes on a couple of likely types here and draws wide, but he’ll likely get back and look to ambush them late. Certainly can measure up.
10 Champagne Gal (Bet Now: $71.00) is the sleeper here. Chris Stelmach trains this mare, who ran at Pinjarra last time and I think she should have finished much closer. Was building good momentum nearer the inside but ended up getting squeezed up somewhat in restricted room. Draws wide, so should get cleair air from the outset.
Race 4. (17:19) AMELIA PARK BEEF HCP 1000M
Going to take a punt on the Holly Locke trained 8 Solarize (Bet Now: $9.00). Just forget he went around last start over 1200m at Bunbury. Given this horse is a jump/run type, 1200m is just too far for him and rightfully weakened out of the finish. 1000m, at this level, does look idea and if he gets to the front and is allowed to roll without too much pressure, he’ll give a great sight.
I think back to a fast run 1000m will suit 5 Bedouin Belle (Bet Now: $3.40). Ran over 1100m here two weeks ago where she got good cover from the gate but in the end got held up for a few strides. Didn’t cost her the win because Celebrity Queen was too good, but to her credit, Bedouin Belle didn’t stop chasing and was quite good. She’ll be charging late.
What to do with 2 Double Jeopardy? (Bet Now: $6.00) Gee he’s been disappointing since coming to WA. He’s teased, threatened, loomed…whatever word you want. He’s well and truly overdue to win one. Resumes off the back of trial win at Bunbury and he is a horse who does tend to race best on the fresh side. Include him in multiples.
Race 5. (17:54) AMELIA PARK LAMB HCP 2400M
2 Crystal Valley (Bet Now: $9.00) for me. Colin Webster has this mare going really well at the moment. Can’t quite crack it for a win but gets a great chance here. Ran over 2200m here a fortnight ago and did a very good job from the back when second to Black Shadow. Gets a good weight pull on that horse here and can sit much closer in the run from the draw.
Jim Taylor has 3 Black Shadow (Bet Now: $4.80) flying and despite the wide draw, has to be respected. Carbery took full advantage of the inside gate when winning here a fortnight ago, sitting in the box seat before angling into clear air and putting them away to win well. Where he gets to from the barrier I do not know, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
6 Stafford’s Lad (Bet Now: $19.00) is the knockout hope. Dominant win at Pinjarra two back before tackling the South West Autumn Cup at Bunbury, a race which had good depth to it, and despite being outclassed, he was far from disgraced behind Spiritual Warrior. Back to this level, any luck from the gate and he’ll go very close.
Race 6. (18:30) AMELIA PARK LODGE HCP 1400M
7 Sherpa Lass (Bet Now: $2.90) is a very smart mare for Dan Morton and confident she can make it 5/5 to start her career. Ran over 1200m here three weeks back when a short priced elect and as she has done pretty much every start, when the race is needed to be won, she digs in superbly and just knows where the post is. Good test here, but confident she can measures up.
1 Lorentinio (Bet Now: $4.80), back to 1400m, I do like. Ran over the mile three weeks ago where he was on speed and booted clear on the turn, looking home, but was bloused near the peg by one of the more in form gallopers in WA at the moment, Media Baron. 1600m sees him right out so back to 1400m, he’ll take some beating.
2 Utgard Loki (Bet Now: $6.00) is on the seven day back up after racing at this track/distance last Saturday where Lucy got him into a sweet spot, three wide with cover, before angling wider on the turn, pouncing on the lead and holding a margin to the line. Has another awful draw, but hopefully gets a similar run to last weekend.
Race 7. (19:05) OLD COMRADE STAKES 1600M
Think 5 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $9.00) only runs well here. Ross Price has him going so well and should get run of the race from the draw. He got that two weeks ago in the Grandstand Cup and tried very hard but couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to Wrinkly. Like him back up to 1600m and should sit on the back of that horse again.
Good test here for 6 Media Baron (Bet Now: $4.20) but David Harrison has him in career best form at the moment. Ran over 1800m here two weeks ago here where he sat back in a truly run affair and was asked to chase from a fair way out but loved the way he knuckled down over the concluding stages to get the job done. This will be a fast run mile and he’ll be strong at the end.
The first up run of 1 Tom Melbourne (Bet Now: $27.00) sums up the recent form of the Lindsey Smith stable, both in WA and Victoria. It was horrendous. He had the dream sit behind the speed and on the turn he looked the one but as soon as you had that thought, he went backwards. His best sees him win. I’ll include him in multiples.
Race 8. (19:45) KARRAKATTA PLATE 1200M
Only bad luck sees 1 Gemma’s Son (Bet Now: $1.60) get beat. He’s the best juvenile in WA and should confirm that well and truly here. Not everything went his way two weeks ago in the Perth Stakes, copping a decent bump at the start, but got into a good spot and from the home turn onwards, it was a painless watch. Should be too good for these.
2 Dom To Shoot (Bet Now: $13.00) is the hard fit/in form galloper that looks a threat if the fav is off his game. Three weeks between runs for Sean Casey after racing over 1200m here where he had to dig and fight hard to get the win but he eventually got there. Fast run 1290m will suit him and does have the fitness edge. Think he’ll run well.
3 Brooklyn Pier (Bet Now: $34.00) is one I’d be certainly including in multiples. Neville Parnham colt that resumed in the Perth Stakes behind Gemma’s Son and for mine, his condition just gave out after getting the box seat sit. He’ll come right on from that and should do no work in the run from the barrier. Think he’ll run top four.
Race 9. (20:20) AMELIA PARK WINES HCP 1100m
9 Laverrod (Bet Now: $2.25) looks the pony to bet on. I want to be forgiving of his failure as a short priced elect here two weeks ago over 1200m against his own age given he did a bit of work in the run, and with 61kg on his back, he couldn’t dash when required and had to settle for second. Gets really good weight relief here and gets run of the race from the draw.
What are they doing with 1 Floyd? (Bet Now: $12.00) Bless the inside run he got last Saturday when winning impressively here over 1400m. The knock is that seven days later he comes back to 1100m and is being asked to carry 61kg. The positive is that he has gate one and has enough tactical early speed to take advantage of it.
7 Oliver’s Travels (Bet Now: $91.00) is the big query here. Was formerly with Simon Miller before having three runs with Rod Brown during the Kalgoorlie Carnival. Now is with Luke Fernie and the stable does have a good strike rate. The best version of this horse would see him measure up comfortably here. I think watch the market with this guy given there’s no public trials leading in.
