Nine races will be run and won at Flemington this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:50) Banjo Paterson Series (Bm100) 2520m
5 One More Try (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another look. She ran two weeks back in the Centaurea and on paper, she did nothing behind Foxy Frida, but she was back in a stop/start race and just couldn’t get a decent drag into it, so be forgiving. Has placed at this track/distance and is only fourth up.
1 Warning (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) has class and that will carry him a long way. He tried his guts out in the Andrew Ramsden but couldn’t quite get there when fourth to impressive winner Point Nepean. if this becomes survival of the fittest, then he has the right run under the belt to be strongest late.
7 Attention Run (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is one I could entertain at a price. Ran over 2000m last Saturday at Caulfield when wide no cover for the trip and tired late behind No Effort. If the track remains to have genuine give in it, especially down in the weights, I think she can run an improved race at odds.
Race 2. (12:25) Next Generation Sprinters Hcp 1100m
2 Dusse (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) looks a filly with some promise for Lloyd Kennewell. Bumped into a smart one in Bubble Palace on debut at Warrnambool before going to Geelong where she led throughout and was much too good. Has the hard fitness and bit of juice in the track will be no issue.
5 Ghaanati (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is a well bred daughter of Deep Impact for Team Snowden that is on debut. This filly looked the part when she prepped in the Summer before being spelled. Has come back and her jumpout work has been strong, so I think she’s ready to rock and roll fresh.
13 Sibylla (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a knockout hope. Chris Waller trained filly that has found Canterbury bogs in both runs this time in and has been okay without jumping up and down, though did make up some headway last time. I reckon back to firmer footing helps and we have seen that set up work in recent weeks.
Race 3. (13:00) Leilani Series (Bm78) 1400m
I reckon this is beautiful placement by Kris Lees with 6 Grande Rumore (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS). Month between runs since a total forgive at Gosford behind Coal Crusher after bombing the start and sitting back in an on pace dominated affair. Her late splits were excellent. Like her up to 1400m, back to Mares grade…I think she’s one of the best on the program.
I want to give 3 Butter Chicken (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) another chance. Market kept her quite safe when she resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago and it was just more of a prep run it seemed. Ridden patient, for luck, didn’t get it and just ground to the line without threatening. She’s waiting for a rise in trip but she has that run under the belt and has class when right.
7 Laffalong (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) has returned in good order. Forget the first up run at Sandown on testing ground before going to this track/distance and was very good late behind Adele Amour. She tends to get better as the prep goes on so third up here, she’s in with a shout.
Race 4. (13:35) Mahogany Challenge Hcp 2000m
3 Natural Mystic (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) looks to be a horse of some promise for the Price/Kent Jr camp. 2/2 to start his career, winning on debut over the mile at Pakenham before stepping up to 2000m here where he absolutely trucked in the run and it was quite a soft win on the line. He’s got more to come and has to be the one to beat.
2 Elzamee (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) was on trial for the Queensland Derby but travel plans ensured that wouldn’t be the case and he instead runs here. Strong winner over the trip at Caulfield last time, helped by a peach from Jye McNeil, who remains on. If he holds his form, he’s a leading chance.
5 The Claimant (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is capable with his best. Real eye catcher two back in the VOBIS Guineas before going to 2000m a few weeks ago where he was quite plain and ran his race in patches behind Elzamee. Gets to a bigger track and hard fit, it’s D-Day re whether he’s a contender or pretender.
Race 5. (14:10) Vrc Community Sprint (Bm70) 1100m
5 Yulong Knight (Bet Now: $20.00) is worth an each way ticket. Rob Blacker trains this very genuine gelding, who ran at the midweeks at Sale last start when specked at a price and looked home after sitting on speed, only getting nabbed on the peg by Nasraawy. Proven down the straight and I think gets in pretty well after the claim.
15 Mask Up (Bet Now: $4.60) has done little wrong in a three start career for Symon Wilde. Won his opening two career outings, including a strong win at Morphettville. He then raced here two weeks ago and tried very hard, but was no match late for an in form Zac De Boss. Think that’s one of the better form references for this.
4 Winsum… (Bet Now: $8.50) is he a contender or pretender? Resumed in the Zac De Boss race and 300m out, it was no betting. He was the winner to the eye but condition gave out and tired to run fourth. Fitter, like him remaining at the short course and has a solid second up record.
Race 6. (14:45) Banjo Paterson Series (Bm84) 2000m
8 Reuber (Bet Now: $7.00) is flying for Cindy Alderson and confident he can measure up to Saturday grade. Ethan Brown rode this gelding a peach at Sandown last start and the horse repaid the ride with a spank job of his rivals. He’s really put it together this time around and confident he can keep progressing and winning.
5 Welsh Legend (Bet Now: $8.00) doesn’t have the best of winning strike rates, but gee she’s an honest mare for Chris Waller who was given a 12/10 by Prebble to win a fortnight back. Sliced his way through the field on the mare and she reacted by showing change up speed and putting the race to bed rather quickly. No issue with 2000m and is hard to beat.
12 Saracen Knight (Bet Now: $21.00) hasn’t done much in a long time but he has upside and home track advantage. He resumed over 1700m at Warrnambool and in a sit/sprint, given he was back near last in the run, he had no chance so forgive and forget he went around behind Bermadez. Fitter, up to 2000m, expect improvement.
Race 7. (15:20) Silver Bowl Series Hcp 1400m
If 8 Cardinal Gem (Bet Now: $3.10) is within range 400m out, he should be winning. He’s got Stakes class ability I feel, but his racing pattern is horrendous. Got back to near last here three weeks ago and surged hard late, just missing out on picking up Jimmy The Bear. Just needs to settle closer in the run and he’ll be winning.
7 Arran Bay (Bet Now: $4.80) is three weeks between runs for Phillip Stokes since attempting to lead throughout at this track/distance. I thought he had every chance given the slow tempo he set, but to be fair, he was only beaten 0.6L. Hopefully he can set a more rolling tempo and prove hard to run down.
10 Aton Of Delight (Bet Now: $19.00) has found winning form and he can certainly hold it. Chris Waller trained three year old that found firmer footing at Cranbourne last time out under the lights and he was absolutely trucking. Just a matter of getting clear air and once he got it, he exploded and won well. He can win again.
Race 8. (16:00) Vrc-Crv Winter C'ship Hcp 1400m
5 Hi Stranger (Bet Now: $17.00) looks on track for the Final. Was off a let up when racing two weeks ago in the Straight Six and he was very good from near last at the 400m when close up behind surprise winner Ocean Beyond. 1200m is on the short side for him so fitter and up to 1400m, he’ll take a power of beating I’d suggest.
3 Harbour Views (Bet Now: $7.00) looks ready to rock and roll fresh for Beetroot Williams. Quality gelding that resumes, having not raced since the Spring when a solid fourth the Seymour Cup at Ballarat behind Mr Brightside, who of course won the Doncaster. Three jumpouts suggest he’s ready to go and John Allen is back on.
2 Blazejowski (Bet Now: $41.00) should be suited up to 1400m for Greg Eurell. He resumed in the Straight Six and was near the speed throughout but felt the pinch at the end behind Ocean Beyond. Might want one more but 1400m and back around a bend are two big ticks.
Race 9. (16:34) Tab / Ata Trainers' Trust Hcp 1100m
I would have loved an extra week off for 9 Passive Agressive (Bet Now: $2.80), but I can’t go past her because I do think she is at least Group class. 2/2 to start her career, making a mess of them on debut at Werribee before going to Pakenham where she was barbecued on speed by another runner but put it away, dashed, and won, eased down the final 75m, and smashed the clock relative to the night. She’s destined for better things. Keen.
1 Dragonstone (Bet Now: $8.00) has been up a little while for Mark Newnham but is holding his form quite nicely. He ran on a bottomless at Randwick last start and tried his guts out, but was no match for a quality horse in Andermatt. Form around him is A1 and does have a class factor.
2 No Way Ever (Bet Now: $15.00) has come back a better filly for the Maher/Eustace camp. Good change up speed to win fresh at Sandown before a game effort here after sitting wide. Then raced down the straight at Flemington where she was in very well at the weights, backed with confidence and duly saluted. Hard to beat once again.
