Nine races will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday where it is Ngawyni Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:42) Tabtouch-w'speed Plat. (rs0mw) 1600m
Good little test here for 9 Star Present (Bet Now: $4.60) but confident she can measure up here. 2/2 this time in, both wins coming at Kalgoorlie. Could say that is really good place,Meg but her confidence is high and she gets the services of Pike. Hard to beat I’d suggest.
3 Hip Wiggle (Bet Now: $8.00) has a good record at Belmont and is in form at the moment. Attempted to lead throughout at Kalgoorlie on Sunday and tried hard, but no match for some Pike magic aboard Pink And Purple. She will put herself into a good spot and run her usual honest race.
6 Surf Point (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Dan Morton trained gelding that has had two runs back from a spell, each coming at 1400m and is racing like he wants further, which he gets here. Latest run came last Wednesday and he closed off well late. Harder here I feel, but has upside to come.
Race 2. (14:22) Crown Towers Plate 1000m
Tricky race for the three year olds. Leaning the way of 8 State Of Power (Bet Now: $3.30) for Simon Miller. She ran at Belmont two weeks ago and was there to win but hit that famous Belmont bump 150m, lost stride and lost her winning claims. Happy to give her another chance.
2 The Front Bar (Bet Now: $3.20) has done little wrong in his short career to date. Led throughout to win here a fortnight back under a lovely ride from Pike. Was there to be beaten but found plenty and was too good. Tricky draw but has the early speed to overcome it.
6 Defending (Bet Now: $16.00) is a son of Oratorio for the Pearce camp that resumes. Hasn’t raced since his debut back in March when back in the run and making up solid ground. Has trialled well leading in and can sit closer to the speed from the inside draw. Knockout hope.
Race 3. (15:02) Free Entry To Belmont Pk-rs0ly 1000m
4 Wilchino (Bet Now: $2.05) should prove hard to beat for Dan Morton. Ran here last Wednesday when on speed under Chris Parnham and she found when asked to win well. This is a winnable 0MW race and has got upside to come compared to most of these.
2 Pearls And Prawns (Bet Now: $5.50) has done little wrong in two runs back from a break, each run coming at Kalgoorlie. Wide no cover last time and battled on really well in defeat behind Manhattan Money. Pike takes the ride and better luck in running, she can take this out.
1 Express Time (Bet Now: $4.40) is the interesting one. I was really keen on her chances two weeks ago here but she was really plain on speed after seemingly getting every chance near the front. If you can forgive that run and go off prior form, she is a leading contender here.
Race 4. (15:42) Bernard Couch Memorial (bm66+) 1600m
1 Aberdeen Queen (Bet Now: $4.40) is racing well I feel. Few weeks between runs when racing over 1400m here last time out and given the race shape, he wasn’t suited, but liked her finale against the race shape. Gets to the mile, which suits her better, and she can take this out without surprising.
4 Vital Flirt (Bet Now: $5.00) is a David Harrison trained mare that is absolutely flying at the moment, winning three on the bounce and looking to make it four. Harvey lost the whip late when racing here two weeks ago yet was able to get the job done. Hard to knock the way she’s going.
7 Spookwood (Bet Now: $31.00) deserves another chance. He ran over 1400m here two weeks back and pit in an absolute shocker when running last behind Giant Leap. Tongue tie goes on, so suggesting that might have been a reason for the flop. He can bounce back against this lot.
Race 5. (16:18) Mrs Mac's (bm72+) 1000m
6 Silkinize (Bet Now: $2.15) on top in what looks a two horse race. David Harrison trained gelding that ran here two weeks ago when dragged back from the wide gate but worked home hard late to just miss out on the win. Can sit much closer in the run from the draw and is hard to beat.
4 Dia De La Raza (Bet Now: $5.00) is 2/2 this time in for Vaughn Sigley and is looking to make it three on the bounce. Loved the way she toughed it out to win here last time out because she was challenged but found plenty under pressure. Hard to knock the way she’s going.
1000m is on the short side for 5 Phoneme (Bet Now: $6.50), but he does have a bit of quality about him when right. Just one soft trial to get ready for his return but a potential good lead is that the stable finds Pike to steer so I’d watch the market with him.
Race 6. (17:00) Amelia Park (bm66+) 1300m
Good benchmark race this with a few strong winning chances. Landed with 6 Giant Leap (Bet Now: $3.50) for Team Williams. Resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago and unleashed a powerful finale from off the speed to get the job done. Back to 1300m is a negative but gate one I think should offset that.
3 Notorious One (Bet Now: $3.00) comes through the race Giant Leap won mentioned above. He did everything wrong to try and win the race and actually did a really good job to get as close as he did. If he can produce better racing manners, he will be hard to hold out late.
2 Living The Dream (Bet Now: $18.00) should be suited back to 1300m. Lindsey Smith trained gelding that ran over 1400m here a fortnight back when leading and looked to about it nicely but just felt the pinch late. He was a few weeks between runs so he should improve for the run.
Race 7. (17:35) Seppelt Wines (rs1mw) 1200m
6 Dunbar (Bet Now: $4.60) is getting towards last chance territory. But in saying that, I want to be forgiving of his run from two weeks ago here. He jumped too well and was forced to sit outside the speed. Loomed but couldn’t finish it off. Blinkers on and with a more conservative steer, he can take this out.
2 Kaptain Kaos (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Michael Grantham trained gelding that resumes. Had a four run Autumn prep and really came of age, winning three on the bounce, establishing himself as a Saturday class horse. Interesting to see what the market does with him.
Big watch on 5 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $12.00), a former Team Williams mare that is having her first run for Luke Fernie. Her best is certainly capable of causing damage and though she resumes without a public trial, she is an astute camp, so I’d watch the market with her.
Race 8. (18:10) Ngawyni (bm78+) 1400m
Class will carry 3 Too Close The Sun (Bet Now: $2.90) a long way. He had a three run Autumn prep in some tidy races and for the most part, was far from disgraced. Comes back to WA and if he is anywhere near the mark fitness wise, he will take a power of beating against these.
2100m back to 1400m I find fascinating with 6 True Attraction (Bet Now: $4.20) but Adam Durrant knows a thing or two about the training caper. He certainly won’t be lacking fitness with that hard racing under the belt and if this does become survival of the fittest, he’ll be strong at the end.
8 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Ross Price trained stayer that resumes. He hasn’t raced since the Grandstand Cup back in March when down the track and looked a tired horse. Has trialled well leading in and could pull out a decent run fresh so watch the market.
Race 9. (18:50) Congrats Peter Hall (rs1mw) 2000m
6 Sluice Box (Bet Now: $7.50) hasn’t won in a tick over a year but he’s knocking on the door. He ran over 2100m here last time out and looked a little unlucky I thought after getting held for a few strides. He has that 2100m run under the belt and that should hold him in good stead.
4 Crossaro (Bet Now: $3.30) is heading in the right direction and does retain Pike, so he has a bit going for him. He has won his last two, both coming at Belmont and each time he has been quite strong to the line. Good test here, but confident he can measure up against these.
2 Sowar (Bet Now: $12.00) is yet to prove himself at the trip but he is racing well and should be around the mark. He does bring solid benchmark form next to him and now drops to a restricted race, so that should help and the run over 2100m last time behind Treasured Crown reads well for this.
