Ten races will be run and won at Rosehill on Saturday for January Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
January Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the January Cup
Race 1. (12:25) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1200m
9 Tulla Park (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented horse when right for Tash Burleigh. Kept safe in betting when resuming over 1000m at Wagga and under a lovely steer from apprentice Fiona Sandkuhl, the gelding was able to wear them down, with the third horse, London Gal, a recent Highway winner, so the form does read well.
4 Steplee (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) is the big query here. Rod Northam trains this gelding and he does scream out of a horse heading down the Country Championships path given last prep he won a couple on the bounce, the latest coming over 1500m at Muswellbrook. Resumes without a trial but stable finds J Mac first up, which is a good lead.
14 Katgully Red (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is another in this race that is proven at Highway grade. He ran behind Anethole two weeks back and caught the eye from near last in the run, beaten just under three lengths in a good effort. If he can settle a few pairs closer in the run, I think he’ll be dangerous.
Race 2. (13:00) Fujitsu General (bm72) 1500m
9 Kopangi (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) brings suspect QLD form but you could argue that there is suspect form across the board here. He didn’t beat much at Ipswich last time out over 1700m but he made a mess of them from off the speed and charged clear late. Back in trip is a negative but right down in the weights, he’ll do me.
5 One Aye (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) rises a bit in depth I feel but is racing well for the Joseph/Jones camp. Ran at Randwick on Boxing Day and worked to the line pretty well from off the speed when third to Nothinsweetaboutme. Should get a suck run from the gate and is one for exotics.
Has the ultimate operation worked with 3 Overlord? (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) He has shown talent since day one but his desire to win had been lacking. Gelded, resumed at Gosford and produced an outstanding win from off the speed to finally break the maiden status. If he can build off that, he’s in the mix.
Race 3. (13:35) Precise Air (bm78) 1500m
9 And We Danced (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) is a fascinating runner. Former Kiwi that makes her Australian debut for Chris Waller. Hasn’t raced since November 13 when far from disgraced at Group l level in the Thousand Guineas at Riccarton. Has looked strong in a couple of trials and I think has a bit of class/quality.
3 Saigon (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) should be suited up in trip. Just missed on the win fresh at Rosehill before stepping up to 1400m at Randwick where she was plain I thought after getting every chance behind Fashchanel. I do think 1500m will suit and forgive a horse for one bad run, especially after a strong resumption.
2 Arctic Thunder (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) likes Rosehill and I think up to 1500m will suit. Gary Portelli trained mare that won a Midway here two back before going to Randwick where she was no hope given the race shape behind Fashchanel so want to be forgiving of that effort. Hard fit now and up in trip, she can bounce back.
Race 4. (14:10) Midway (bm72) 1400m
1 Holy Reign (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have returned in pretty good order. Trialled up well prior to resuming in a Midway at Randwick and though helped by the speed in front, his finale was quite good when third to Queen Bellissimo. Fitter and up to 1400m look two big ticks and is hard to beat.
5 Metro Legend (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. This guy hasn’t raced since September 1 when a close up third on the Kenso track behind handy galloper Come Along. Has had a couple of trials to get ready for his return and with J Mac on fresh, he is sure to be fancied.
7 Savvy Crown (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS) is a Jason Deamer trained gelding that resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 4 when down the track and at the end of his prep in a Midway behind Casino Mondial. Hasn’t beaten a runner home in two trials, but is a capable horse, so watch the market.
Race 5. (14:45) Petaluma (bm88) 1400m
8 Kingshier (Bet Now: $4.50) for me. Comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since Gong Day at Kembla when a close up third to talented animal Steely in a tight finish. Tick over trial was good and given this race is now lacking any real early tempo, I think he’ll be positive, lead and prove hard to run down with the light weight.
4 Lackeen (Bet Now: $4.20) gets another chance. Was with him a few weeks ago at the Randwick mile. He got out in time to win but perhaps the inside section of the track wasn’t A1 ground at that stage of the meeting. Run at Kembla was good, bolted up start prior on Cup Day at Flemington, he deserves another chance.
6 Wairere Falls (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Savabeel for Chris Waller that resumes. He did a super job during the Winter/Spring, with his prep ending with a fab win over the mile at Randwick. Couple of soft trials to get ready for his return, market will be fascinating to see what it does with him.
Race 6. (15:20) Acy Securities (bm72) 1100m
6 Astero (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to have returned in good order. Resumed at Warwick Farm behind Rule Of Law and was very good against the pattern when a closing fourth, beaten just over three lengths. Staying at 1100m is the knock with him but if he’s within range 400m out, he’s a leading chance.
1 Rule Of Law (Bet Now: $2.60), I think, has turned the corner since being gelded. 2/2 since the ultimate operation, both coming over 1100m on his home track at Warwick Farm. I’m usually wary of home track horses at Warwick Farm but he has looked impressive and backed it up on the clock, so he’s the one to beat IMO.
I wonder if J Mac will get the shakes getting back aboard 4 Joviality (Bet Now: $26.00), who resumes here for Chris Waller. Last time he rode her was Cup Day 2020 at Flemington and she was one of the best things beat you will ever see. She’s only had four runs since and hasn’t done much. Two trials to get ready have been solid and the jockey booking is key.
Race 7. (16:00) Ranvet (bm78) 1500m
6 Loveplanet (Bet Now: $2.80) on top. Chris Waller trains this gelding, who resumed over 1200m at Randwick on Boxing Day and closed off pretty well I thought when close up in defeat behind Animate. Fitter and up to 1500m on his home track, I think he’s one of the hardest to beat.
2 Canasta (Bet Now: $3.00) is on the seven day back up for Bjorn Baker after racing last Saturday on the Kenso track where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick from the front, but couldn’t quite finish the job when a close up fourth to For Valour. Think he leads this field up comfortably and has a liking for Rosehill.
1 Southern Lights (Bet Now: $10.00) is a horse who I have time for. Paraded really well prior to his Aussie debut at Randwick on Boxing Day but his race shape wasn’t to his liking. That said, the run had merit to it behind Holyfield. I reckon he might want one more run, but he has talent.
Race 8. (16:40) January Cup 2000m
3 Attorney (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing really well at the moment I feel. First run at 2000m for the prep and was there to win the race, but couldn’t finish it off and peaked on the run when a close up fourth. Second run at 2000m for the prep now. Just needs luck from a tricky gate.
This is a clear harder assignment for 14 Pecuniary Interest (Bet Now: $5.50), but John Sargent has him flying. Admittedly he comes off two Midway wins, which is far inferior form on paper to others engaged here, but he has been strong each time, he gets serious weight relief and loves getting his toe in.
12 So Wicked (Bet Now: $27.00) loves to get her toe in as well and third up, should just about be at peak fitness. She ran last Wednesday in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford and didn’t fire a shot in a race dominated by those on speed. She races best when near the front and this looks a race where she can do that and run a much improved race.
Race 9. (17:20) Chandon (bm78) 1800m
2 Zegalo (Bet Now: $3.90) will take beating if he gets the rub of the green. Ugly watch if you were on him on Boxing Day at Randwick. He should have won but just had no room to move in the straight when full of running. Charged late to just miss. Needs luck in the run given his racing pattern but if he gets it, he can win this.
12 Casino Kid… (Bet Now: $6.50) surely he will win one soon. He’s flying for Jan Bowen but given his racing pattern, he’ll receive more bad luck than good, and that was the case at Randwick on Boxing Day where he should have fought the finish out but didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight. If he gets the rub of the green, he’s right in the mix.
3 Greek Hero (Bet Now: $15.00) is a beauty for Jason Deamer that is honest and should be around the mark again. Ran in the Dhakuri race from two weeks back at Randwick and he closed off quite well nearer the inside, clocking some of the better late splits of the race. Hard to beat if he can sit closer in the run.
Race 10. (18:00) Rosehill Bowling Club (bm88) 1200m
5 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $2.00) looks the good thing in the get out. Ran over 1200m at Randwick three weeks ago where he was back, wide with cover, before J Mac eased him to clear air in the straight and he unleashed a powerful finale to win and win impressively. Third up, with improvement to come, and has a fab record on the home track. All points to him.
7 I Am Power (Bet Now: $12.00) is getting towards his D-Day I feel. Run off his legs first up behind Mr Mosaic in a clear forgive. Then went to Randwick and expected a bit more from him in what was just a fair run behind Tycoonist. Showed good promise when last in work, so he gets one more chance.
11 Ranges (Bet Now: $7.00) is an honest customer for Team Snowden that should be around the mark. Regan Bayliss rode him positively at Randwick on Boxing Day and it all but worked, just failing to get there when a narrow second to handy animal Animate. 1400m is a query, but I think with a conservative steer, he’ll be okay.
