Race 1. (12:15) Debutant Stakes 1000m
5 Princess Duhallow (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a Shalaa filly that looks to have jumped out very well in readiness for start one. Led and bolted up to win a recent Flemington jumpout and seemed to move very well to my eye in gapping her rivals. Has gate one and with these early 2YO races, finding the fence and following it is gold.
3 King’s Gambit (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained colt that is on debut and is bred to be a good one being by I Am Invincible out of Sultry Feeling, a quality mare when right. He trialled at Warwick Farm a couple of weeks ago and he chased strongly under riding to win his trial in solid time and what I liked is that he responded when asked. Stable are very good with their juveniles so watch the market.
1 Adeem (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is another well bred colt here. By Pride Of Dubai out of Oohood, he debuts for Team McEvoy. His jumpout work suggests he’ll need time, but overall, this is a pretty thin race I think and if they go silly in front, I think on breeding, he’ll be strong at the end.
Race 2. (12:50) Weekend Hussler Stakes 1400m
Happy to be with 2 Old Flame (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS). Knuckled down strongly fresh to win at Rosehill. He then raced there again when trying his guts out but just failed to get there when a narrow second to Surf Dancer. Hard fit now, ideal map, J Kah on, he ticks plenty of boxes for me. Hard to beat.
12 Cardinal Gem (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) rises to Stakes grade from a low benchmark race, but that win last time out at Flemington on Trial Day was arrogant. He got into a bumping battle early on but he balanced up with clear air, he put them away and was dominant. Clearly harder, but he’s promising.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for 5 Regardsmaree (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). He resumed over 1300m at Sandown where he wasn’t entirely suited by the race shape but was far from disgraced in defeat behind I Wish I Win. Gets a much better set up this time around and can certainly take this out.
Race 3. (13:25) Thoroughbred Club Stakes 1200m
Have to be with 10 Kin (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS). James Cummings trained filly that is three weeks between runs since racing over 1000m here and really, any hint of luck and she wins the race. She was bolting in the run. Just didn’t get a chance with zero clear air in the straight. First up win at Newcastle was impressive so I think she has come back very well and is hard to beat here.
3 Nanagui (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is racing very well this time in. Got the maiden win out of the way fresh at Geelong before going to the Cap D’Antibes at Flemington where she produced good change up speed from off the pace and let down with purpose to win nicely. Won’t mind give in the track and I don’t see 57kg being an issue.
14 La Danseuse Rouge (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) commands respect. Quiet trial leading into her return at Sandown where she looked as if she would run second to Boldinho, but the weight pull kicked in, she found under pressure and fended them off to win and win well. Showed good promise last prep, and that was a strong win, so she commands respect.
Race 4. (14:00) Village Stakes 1200m
Gee he is a nice horse 4 Triple Missile (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) and great to see him back at the races. He resumes for Lindsey Smith, having not raced since an arrogant win in the Golden Topaz during the Swan Hill where he produced electric change up speed from off the pace to win with absolute ease. Destined for better races than this and with his turn of foot, he’ll be hard to hold out.
14 Zethus (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) commands respect. He returned to racing as a gelding on Moir Night at The Valley and yes, he had the pattern in his corner, but even allowing for that, he was impressive when dashing clear late. Form around him as a 3YO reads very well, J kah sticks…just needs luck from the draw.
12 Curran (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) has an awful racing pattern but he can launch at these late. He ran in the Ingratiating race from three weeks back where he was near last in the run but motored late nearer the inside, the worst ground I thought, when a close up third. 1200m is a query, but if he’s within range, he can launch late.
Race 5. (14:35) Herbert Power Stakes 2400m
1 Grand Promenade (Bet Now: $20.00) looks to have come back well enough. He resumed in the JRA Cup at The Valley where he was no chance of winning given the track pattern but was solid in defeat behind Desert Icon. Like him up to 2400m, on a bigger track and with the Maher/Eustace polish, he’s hard to beat.
2 Persan (Bet Now: $8.50) has found positive form and with this stable, you’d be surprised if he went backwards. Just a run fresh behind Makram before going to the JRA Cup where he found the fence and worked to the line well late without threatening behind Desert Icon. Fitter and up to a more suitable trip, he’s hard to beat.
12 Saracen Knight (Bet Now: $4.20) rises sharply in grade/depth but he is right down in the weights with J Kah aboard and is in form after making a mess of an average bunch to take out the Ansett at Mornington. Stable is finding form at the right time and the map is ideal for him.
Race 6. (15:10) Schillaci Stakes 1100m
1 Paulele (Bet Now: $2.25), if indeed he’s going to be an Everest contender, would want to be putting this lot away and I think he will put them away. Resumed in the Moir and was zero hope given the way the track played but he was good late behind Coolangatta. Fitter, up to 1100m on the bigger track, good luck beating him.
9 Queen Of The Ball (Bet Now: $5.00) has been well placed by Michael Freedman. She’s not quite up to the top level but these second/third tier Stakes races are ripe for her, especially with her racing pattern. Dominant all the way win in the Scarborough at The Valley and yes, the pattern was in her corner, but she was impressive. She’ll land on the bunny and prove hard to run down.
2 Ingratiating (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to have returned in really good order. Resumed over 1100m here three weeks ago when getting the suck run behind the speed and he was trucking. Zahra pushed the button and he showed good change up speed to win impressively despite wandering about under pressure. Natural improvement, firmer footing, he’s hard to beat.
Race 7. (15:50) Might And Power 2000m
Pretty confident that 7 Anamoe (Bet Now: $2.35) can assert himself as quite clearly #1 seed for the Cox Plate with another Group l win here. He was dominant in the George Main, sitting on a slow speed and went through his gears like a quality horse he is when winning impressively. He’s suited big time at 2000m. he lands on speed…he only has to go backwards in form to be losing, and despite the lameness worry after the George Main, I’ll back in the stable to have him spot on.
I want to give 1 Zaaki (Bet Now: $4.40) another chance. He was pretty plain in the Underwood I thought but the excuse I’ll make for him is that he got hit in the head with Tim Clark and his whip, which wouldn’t be ideal when you’re trying to run flat out. My thought process with him is that he is a rail horse. Once he finds the rail, he’s a differnet horse. Too good of a horse to pen.
6 Nonconformist (Bet Now: $61.00) is on track for the Caulfield Cup…I think. He just hasn’t been in races run to suit his past couple, the latest in the Underwood at Sandown. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, he was excellent in this race last year…can see him running a much improved race.
Race 8. (16:30) Caulfield Guineas 1600m
3 Golden Mile (Bet Now: $3.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Looked the winner for a few strides in the Golden Mile but just wanted to do a bit wrong under pressure and eventually finished fourth. J Mac on is a big tick, he’ll land in a plum spot and usually, the Sydney form is lengths better than Melbourne form. Hard to beat.
2 Berkeley Square (Bet Now: $4.60) is several weeks between runs and is primed to run well. He was an excellent winner of the Exford at Flemington, getting the suck run before Williams sliced his way through the field and drove hard late for an impressive win. He’ll love getting to the mile and it’s been known since the debut he’s a line chaser. The main threat.
The jockey booking is key here for 9 Osipenko (Bet Now: $18.00). Tim Clark doesn’t ride often for the stable but when he does, it’s for a reason. Go forward. Too wet for him fresh in the Prelude but the lead is there to be had. Likely is him in front and he showed in the Winter that he’s a sharp animal. A win wouldn’t shock at all.
Race 9. (17:10) Toorak Hcp 1600m
5 I Wish I Win (Bet Now: $2.45) is a jet. Is he the best thing since sliced bread as some are making out? No, but he’s good enough to take care of this lot. Made a mess of them over 1400m here at his Australian debut before going to Sandown where he looked in trouble early on in the straight but once he got clear, he went through his gears like a very good horse. All things being equal, he should win.
13 Pinstriped (Bet Now: $13.00) is on track I think. Has he improved from his 3YO season? Not entirely sure, but he is racing well enough to be ultra competitive here. Good second fresh to Scallopini at Flemington before going to the Sandown Stakes where they walked in front and he was no chance, but liked the way he found the line when second to Gentleman Roy. Hard fit at the mile and a drop of rain won’t hurt his cause.
10 Bankers Choice (Bet Now: $34.00) is the one I’ll be specking at a price to cover I Wish I Win. I thought he was good late in the Sir Rupert Clarke after getting a mile out of his ground and not 100% sure he was happy on the bog surface. Go back to the Autumn, he was just under three lengths away from Mr Brightside in the Doncaster, the best mile race in Australia. That has to read well for him to run a positive race here.
Race 10. (17:45) Northwood Plume Stakes 1200m
11 Another Award (Bet Now: $10.00) will appreciate a more genuine tempo. She resumed in the How Now in what was essentially a barrier trial but given that race shape, she worked home quite well nearer the inside when fourth to Zapateo. If they go harder in front, which I think they will, she’ll be more effective.
3 Zapateo (Bet Now: $2.20) commands some level of respect. She got another Group lll win three weeks back here when showing good change up speed on testing ground to win the How Now, with the race set up perfect for her to use her turn of foot. Truly run 1200m is her query, but hard to knock the way she’s returned.
10 Decent Raine (Bet Now: $16.00) commands respect. She resumed down the straight here on Trial Day and ran well from near the speed, but was no match for Joyful Fortune, who is now an Everest contender. Proven at 1200m, enormous upside, Maher/Eustace polish, she’s a leading chance.
