Spring is just around the corner and some of the better class gallopers will be out on display this Saturday at Rosehill where it is Missile Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:50) Sky Racing Active (72) 1500m
Good race this with several strong winning contenders. Fitter, the rise to 1500m and unbeaten this prep are all big ticks for the Chris Waller trained mare 2 Dancing Gidget (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS). Big win from her over 1400m here two weeks ago when sitting off a good speed before peeling wider and she surged hard late to get the win. Off that, 1500m here will be fine and is a leading contender.
6 Papal Warrior (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) is honest and should be around the mark again. Ran over 1400m here a fortnight back where he had the suck run in behind before getting a split nearer the inside. Nash threw everything at him but too good was Dancing Gidget. 1500m is a little query, but he’s hard fit and racing in good form despite not winning.
The one with the upside/progression among these is clearly 9 Montefilia (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS). She was one of the runs of the day when resuming on the Kenso track three weeks ago behind Giovanna Run, finishing off strongly against the severe track pattern for the afternoon. Would love further than an extra 100m, but on her home track and is right down in the weights.
Race 2. (12:25) Everest Carnival On Sale (78) 1500m
Going to have somewhat of a throw at the stumps via 7 Orcein (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS). My thinking with him is that he saves his best for Rosehill and doesn’t go a hard elsewhere. With that in mind, forget he went around last Saturday at Randwick on what was a very testing track. He was a beaten horse 600m. Back to Rosehill and looks to map super, hopefully box seating behind either Noble Joey or Frosty Rocks.
I think Nathan Doyle has a pretty good one here in 4 Royal Banquet (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) and confident he can handle the step up to Saturday grade. The Warwick Farm track last time out was very testing but he handled it superbly and spanked them in an impressive city debut. Harder here, but there is a bit to like about the way he goes about it.
6 New King (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) might want one more but interesting that the stable finds J Mac to steer. This son of Frankel is second up after making his Australian debut over 1300m here two weeks ago when back last in the run and went past the walkers late. If the inside gate is used to advantage, his overseas form doesn’t read too bad for a race like this.
Race 3. (13:00) Tab Highway Plate (c3) 1800m
Looks a race in two and I think you can back both to win. On top though is 3 Group Think (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS). Was on him in the Highway two weeks ago and I think with a clear path in the straight, he goes close to winning. Landed in a beaut spot just off the speed but when it came to getting clear, it didn’t happen until far too late. He’ll love 1800m and hopefully better luck is around the corner.
2 Bajan Gold (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is the other winning chance for me. He was well specked at a price in the same Highway mentioned above won by Eiger and he too was a little unlucky. Just got held up at a vital stage when wanting to build the revs but was really good late. He’ll eat up 1800m and has plenty of upside to come.
Up to 1800m I do like for 11 Holy Empress (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS). Another that comes through the Eiger Highway from two weeks back over 1500m here. She was back near last in the run and while she was never a winning threat, she did make up ground late. Is a winner at the trip and if she can sit closer in the run, she’ll be a knockout chance.
Race 4. (13:35) De Bortoli Wines (88) 1200m
3 Outback Diva (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) potentially maps to get a perfect sit behind the speed and with Tim Clark back on, leaning her way. Outstanding in defeat two back at Randwick before racing here two weeks ago where probably 1300m against the boys just found her out late. If she can land the box seat, think she takes a power of beating.
5 Heart Of The Oak (Bet Now: $2.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Sebring for Gerald Ryan that resumes. This girl ran in some pretty good races during the Autumn, including the Surround when far from disgraced behind Probabeel. Then went to the PJ Bell and ran down the track behind Rubisaki before being spelled. Loved her trial win and finds a winnable race to resume in if she’s ready to go.
1 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) is an absolute beauty for Kris Lees. Tries her heart out every time she steps out and more often than not is around the mark. Hasn’t raced since June 27 at Doomben when snagged back to near last before easing into clear air and finishing off strongly when second to Starla. Tick over trial was good.
Race 5. (14:15) Clubsnsw Western Metro (78) 2400m
Tricky staying race but the safe option is 6 Loveseat (Bet Now: $3.90) for James Cummings. Narrow second in the Stayers Cup two Sweet Thomas before having a month off and coming back to this track/distance two weeks ago when working to the line pretty well behind impressive winner Korcho. Got improvement to come I think and has the right form.
1 Rezealient (Bet Now: $5.00) is hard to beat for the Maher/Eustace team. Ran second to Korcho here two weeks back and I thought his effort was full of merit, making up plenty of ground nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be for the meeting. If he reproduces that run here, think he goes close. The query being does he want further?
2 Stardome (Bet Now: $4.60) is the interesting runner. Has done his recent racing in Queensland and he seems to be really enjoying his racing at the moment. Ran a fortnight back on a testing Doomben track and he lapped it up, drawing clear late to win impressively under a confident steer from Larry Cassidy. Harder here, but think he can measure up.
Race 6. (14:55) The Rosebud 1100m
5 Anders (Bet Now: $2.70) will be the talk and hype horse given how well he trialled last week on the Polytrack. Admittedly, sometimes you have to take those trials on those tracks with a grain of salt, but he’s done it on race day with the runs on the board, so I think you can trust what you saw there and he seems a real sharp type.
I think 11 The Face (Bet Now: $5.50) can measure up here for Gerald Ryan. On face value, not sure he beat a great deal on debut at Gosford, but it was the manner in which he put them away. Ran the quickest 400-200m split and backed it up with the fastest last 200m of the race. Overall time stacked up well for the day and always have to respect the stable.
7 Shaik (Bet Now: $17.00) lacks the class of some of these but one thing she does have going for her is race fitness, hard race fitness. Loomed large to beat Smart Image two weeks ago but that youngster just had a bit too much class when it counted and was too good. Would Smart Image beat these? I’m saying no, so not sure it’s the winning form line for this, but she’s a first four contender.
Race 7. (15:35) Missile Stakes 1200m
I’m amazed 5 Flit (Bet Now: $3.40) isn’t close to favourite. I really hope that the stable realise she’s a 1200-1400m horse, similar to that of the recently retired Alizee and I think that Flit can fill the void. They had numerous GFs for her in the Autumn, but look at her 1200m record: Five starts for two wins and three placings and two of those placings, she should have won. Recent trial was outstanding, Blinkers are back on and J Mac steers.
I was originally against 4 Melody Belle (Bet Now: $2.80), but with the field now reduced to six, the race does look a perfect kicking off point and is a serious winning chance despite the skin rash setback earlier this week. Champion mare who is a 10 time Group l winner and has been sparkling in work between races and her trial. Class will carry her a long way.
2 Mister Sea Wolf (Bet Now: $15.00) looks to be flying for Chris Waller. On face value, overall, it was just a fair Autumn, but bear in mind he did resume with a third in the Group l Canterbury Stakes and contested the Doncaster, plus the All Aged, so that form reads just far superior to these. Flies fresh, loved the trials and generally saves his best for Rosehill.
Race 8. (16:15) Rosehill Bowling Club (78) 1200m
Each way for me via 4 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $7.00), who is on the quick back up for Richard Litt after racing on Wednesday at Canterbury and was enormous from the back, just missing out on the win when a close up second to Kookabaa. Yet to do a seven day back up never mind three days, so that’s a query, but hard, racing well and loves heavy ground.
10 Tailleur (Bet Now: $1.60) is a talented mare for James Cummings that won her first two career outings in impressive fashion before racing on the Kenso track three weeks ago. Bias perhaps, but overall, thought she had her chance to beat Killin and expected a bit more. She’s better than that. Think a firmer deck would be ideal, so hopefully the weather is kind.
2 Top Striker (Bet Now: $26.00) is gradually getting down in the weights for Greg Hickman and poses some kind of complete blowout chance. He ran over 1000m on the Kenso track three weeks back and didn’t have much luck in the straight when beaten just under two lengths by Spaceboy. Form out of it has been suspect, but he gets good weight relief and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
Race 9. (16:55) Tab (78) 1200m
I think each way, can’t go wrong with 8 Fender (Bet Now: $5.00). Brett Cavanough trained gelding that resumes, with an eye towards the Kosciuszko I would assume so my thinking would be he’s ready to go to try and get the attention of punters. Unbeaten in three career outings and I thought for sure he would be sold to Hong Kong but he remains here and his Tamworth trial was outstanding. Stalks Partners and I hope kicks on strongly late.
7 Partners (Bet Now: $5.00) will look the winner for a long way. Scott Singleton has got him going super at the moment, winning a couple on the bounce prior to racing at this track/distance a fortnight back when leading and giving a really strong kick. Just no match for a potential Stakes class type in Varda. Leads, gives a sight…heart in the mouth stuff last 100m.
3 Perigold (Bet Now: $7.00) produced one of the wins of the meeting when resuming at Canterbury given he was back in the run before peeling wide before the turn to get going and defied the track pattern, kicking on strongly to get the job done in a huge effort. Harder here and poorly weighted, plus the overall time was ordinary, but the win was great.
