A nine race card has been assembled for Caulfield on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

It’s almost shut up shop and retire time if 1 Steel Prince (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) can’t put this field away. Just needed the run fresh in the Peter Young before going to a fast run Australian Cup where he wasn’t suited behind Duais. He is suited at 2400m and back to this level…surely he wins.

Danger

5 Maserartie Bay (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) is hard to beat, but I am really surprised he is as short as he is given it was more or less a barrier trial he won last start, that being the Yarra Valley Cup, and he beat up a fairly average lot. Positives are that he has the Maher/Eustace polish and has upside to come.

Long Shot

4 White Hawk (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a Tassie raider that comes through the Mornington Cup where he was outclassed on paper but I actually thought he didn’t run too bad of a race in defeat behind Crystal Pegasus. The small field and solid form does give him a rough winning chance.

Race 2. (13:05) Dexion Victoria (bm84) 2000m

Back Me

Not sure Caulfield will suit 7 Deepstrike (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) but he’s a progressive horse. Price/Kent trained four year old that found 1800m on a big track, Sandown, last time out, and he made an absolute mess of them, getting better as the race went on. If he handles Caulfield, he’ll take beating.

Danger

2 Playoffs (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) has the Maher/Eustace polish and commands respect. Several weeks between runs since racing over 2500m at The Valley when being asked to go earlier than normal and fought on well in defeat when third to the in form French Moon. Fresh legs and back to 2000m, he’s a threat.

Long Shot

3 Barry The Baptist (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) has returned in pretty good order. Pass mark I thought fresh in the Echuca Cup behind Not To Be Mist before going to Mornington where he was quite solid from the back when fifth to It’s Tornado Storm. Saves his best for this distance range, so he’s in with a shout.

Race 3. (13:40) Obrien Real Estate (bm78) 1600m

Back Me

1 Intellective (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a Matty Williams trained mare who should take beating here. Strong win at Ballarat two back before contesting the Country Final at Flemington and worked home quite strongly late in the piece when third to Glassey Miss. Off that, she’s the pony to beat.

Danger

4 Ocean’s Jen (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) could land in a nasty spot from the inside gate but hard to knock the way she is racing at the moment. Ran over 1400m at Sandown last time out and just took a little too long to wind into her work but was sound late. Lands box seat here…just depends if she can build the revs.

Long Shot

2 Welsh Legend (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is an interesting runner. Chris Waller trained mare that resumes, having not raced since December 18 when fourth over 2000m at Randwick behind a promising animal in Huetor. Trials leading in have been strong and her form does read well for this.

Race 4. (14:15) Redoutes Choice Stakes 1100m

Back Me

8 Yowie (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is the safe option. Plenty to like about her debut win at Sandown. Was heavily backed late and despite being challenged halfway down the straight, she found when required and on the line drew clear late. If she holds that, I think she’s the one to beat.

Danger

10 Easterly (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) looks the pick of the first starters. Price/Kent trained filly that has had a couple of jumpouts to get ready for start one. Loved the way she moved late in her most recent jumpout at Cranbourne, with change up speed instant when asked for an effort. Watch the market with her.

Long Shot

9 Prairie Fire (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is a Henry Dwyer trained filly that comes here off the back of a maiden win at Ballarat where she was an impressive winner from off the speed, a completely different horse to what she produced in the Spring. Stable in form, she commands respect.

Race 5. (14:55) L.u. Simon Builders (bm70) 1100m

2 Hypersonic (Bet Now: $4.50) will jump on the bunny and give them something to chase. Sustained speed from the front saw him bolt up fresh at Ballarat in an impressive return. Was that a one off or has he come back a better horse? Drawn wide, but doesn’t matter at the 1100m start and gets in well after the claim for an apprentice who rides on speed horses well.

Danger

6 The Last Napoleon (Bet Now: $6.50) has an awful racing pattern but will be strong at the end. Was on his back over the 955m at The Valley last time and he should have been right in the finish. Just had no luck at a vital stage. He’ll concede a start but will be charging late.

Long Shot

10 Florent (Bet Now: $26.00) is a hard horse to catch but her best is capable of figuring in the finish. Resumes for Tony Noonan, having not raced since Thousand Guineas Day here when down the track in the Ladies Day Vase. Recent jumpout was solid, I’d watch the market with her.

Race 6. (15:35) Wilde Racing Hcp 1100m

Back Me

11 Tipungwuti (Bet Now: $18.00) on top. Not sure she beat a great deal fresh at Kilmore but she made a mess of them in an impressive return, her late splits being some of the best of the entire meeting. Gets right down in the weights after the claim and has more upside to come than most engaged.

Danger

7 Magic Max (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented animal for the Richards/Moyle camp. Resumed four weeks ago on the Parks track over 1000m where he looked a good thing on paper and he justified that thought with a somewhat arrogant win. Can he keep going through the grades? If the answer is yes, he has to be winning this race.

Long Shot

8 Hunnam (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Chris Waller trained three year old that is in the mix. Three weeks between runs since resuming at The Valley when off the speed and worked home okay without threatening behind Snapper. Back to his own age, he’s a knockout chance IMO.

Race 7. (16:15) Manhari Metals Plate 1400m

Back Me

9 Botany (Bet Now: $11.00) looks a good prospect for Peter Moody. Backed as if she was the second coming of Black Caviar on debut at Bairnsdale and despite several nervous moments, her finale was electric to get the win. Last 200m was the best of the race and the third best of the entire meeting. Good improvement to come and in the right camp.

Danger

3 Belle Savoir… (Bet Now: $2.30) how good is she? 2/2 to start her career and she personifies how well Nick Ryan and his stable are going. Market didn’t want her when she resumed at Sandown but she finished off strongly under McDougall and was too good for them. Fitter, up to 1400m, unbeaten, she’ll take beating I suggest.

Long Shot

1 Tilianam (Bet Now: $14.00) should be suited back to 1400m. Ran over the mile at The Valley last time out in the Akexandra where she tried hard but class just lacked and she felt the pinch late behind Daisies. Better suited here at this level and back in trip, so an improved showing is expected.

Race 8. (16:50) Iam (bm84) 1600m

7 Think N Fly (Bet Now: $5.50) is rarely far away in these kind of races. Josh Richards rode him positively at Mornington last start and he stuck to the task pretty well, but overall, had his chance. He’s a horse you can’t back to win with confidence, but I’m sure he’ll be around the mark.

Danger

10 Beltoro (Bet Now: $4.80) deserves another chance. Contested the Country Mile Final at Flemington last time out when four wide no cover for the trip in a total forgive run. The start prior, he bolted up at Bendigo. Off that effort, I think he’s right in with a shout against this lot.

Long Shot

2 Cormorant (Bet Now: $41.00) was touted as a Cups horse last Spring so jury is out on him and whether he’s enjoying life here. Resumed last Saturday in the Golden Mile and on the turn he looked to be trucking but found little in the straight. On a firmer deck here, fitter, he can improve.

Race 9. (17:25) Seppelt Wines (bm78) 1400m

Back Me

7 Old Flame (Bet Now: $4.20) is an import I have time for. Team Snowden trained galloper that made his Australian debut at Sandown and I loved the way he showed change up speed when clicked up by J Kah, timing the run perfectly to nail them late. He’s got the upside and talent to measure up here and be a leading contender.

Danger

11 Paperboy (Bet Now: $3.00) has done nothing wrong since joining Gavin Bedggood. Beaten a lip by Unanimous two back over this track/distance. Freshened up and ran down the straight at Flemington when a closing second to surprise winner Don’ttelltheboss. Fitter and back up in trip, he’ll take beating.

Long Shot

9 Beehunter (Bet Now: $9.50) is a hard horse to catch but I actually think he’s racing really well this time in. Close up third in the Summer Sprint Final at The Valley before racing down the straight at Flemington and was good late behind Don’ttelltheboss. I think the rise to 1400m suits and is hard to beat.
