Day two of the Championships comes around this Saturday at Randwick, headlined by the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:40) Fernhill Mile 1600m
5 Kote (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in from a betting perspective. I reckon he was ridden too warm in the Rosehill 1400m race from two weeks ago and he tired badly. The runs prior, he was pretty good when ridden with a sit so with Pike on, I suspect that will eventuate.
2 Moko (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained filly that I think will be okay at the mile. Ran two weeks ago at Rosehill over 1400m where she tried her guts out in horrendous conditions, just missing out on the win when second to Williamsburg. Think there is more to come from her and draws soft.
8 Highland Harley (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) is one for wider multiples. Liam Howley trained juvenile that comes through the Mornington Sires, where it was essentially a maiden, and he worked home okay late when third. Not sure he wins, but I can see him finishing top four in a thin race.
Race 2. (12:15) South Pacific Classic 1400m
I took $2.80 all in for 9 Loch Eagle… (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS) I do think that was overs and hopefully the market leading into the race agrees. 2/2 this time in, winning arrogantly first up at Newcastle before a dominant win at Warwick Farm, beating Straight Arron, who looks a Group l winner in waiting. If you trust that form, which I do, Loch Eagle is an odds on pop.
7 Cotehele (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a horse with talent for John O’Shea. Resumed at the midweeks at Warwick Farm where he got a fair way back in the run and was never really a threat, but liked the way he finished off the race behind Vilana. Has run well at this track in strong races prior, so giving him respect as a threat if the fav is off his game.
5 Shihonka (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) commands respect. Far from disgraced in the Surround behind Hinged before contesting the Darby Munro where she made up ground in what I thought was slightly inferior ground when fourth to Mazu. Back on her home deck, hard to beat if she can land on speed.
Race 3. (12:50) Provincial-Midway Provincial C'ship Final 1400m
I really like 3 Kinloch (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) as a horse. Has been given a month freshen up since producing a barnstorming finale to take out the Gosford Qualifier, beating up a field which had depth to it, and he was a worked up horse pre race, with improvement to come. Fitter and up to 1400m on the big track, he’ll be very strong at the end.
2 Never Talk (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is the class runner of the field. Just has to run out a strong 1400m. Gifted a peach ride and run in a Newcastle Qualifier under J Mac and she made a mess of them. She is the best horse in the race. Just not 100% sold about her, but she commands respect.
13 Pippali (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive mare for Jason Coyle that has been strong in two runs back from a spell. Resumed with a third to Never Talk at Newcastle in a Qualifier before racing there again and secured her spot in this field with a dominant win at Newcastle, aided by a peach from Pike. She’s capable of measuring up here.
Race 4. (13:25) Percy Sykes Stakes 1200m
14 Willinga Beast (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) looks a really nice filly for Kris Lees that I think can measure up. Not sure she beat a great deal on debut at Canterbury but the manner in which she put them away was just so impressive and ran decent time. She’ll eat up 1200m and no issue on wet ground I feel. Hard to beat.
2 Sheeza Belter (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Luke Fernie in WA but now finds herself with Team Snowden with this race in mind. Dodged the Karrakatta to run here, her last race being a dominant Magic Millions triumph at Pinjarra. Trialled well and worked well between races last week alongside Paris Dior. Watch the market.
10 Kin (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) resumes here for James Cummings and she could be quite dangerous. Had a two run prep at Flemington down the straight, placing each time in solid races with a good SP. Spelled with this race as a target and has trialled up really well in readiness. She commands respect.
Race 5. (14:00) Arrowfield Sprint 1200m
A win here for 6 Mazu (Bet Now: $2.70) and I’d say he will be looked at to secure an Everest slot. He has won his past four and yes, he has been beautifully placed, but he has been dominant, beating up his own age. There is depth to this, but it’s hard to knock the way he is racing at the moment. He’ll do me.
2 Paulele (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday against the big boys in the TJ Smith. He stuck to the task and was very good in defeat behind Nature Strip and Eduardo. He saves his best for Randwick and back to his own age, he appeals big time. Just depends what is left in the tank.
11 I Am Lethal (Bet Now: $20.00) has to kick off somewhere and here he is against three high class three year olds. His form is far inferior to this lot, likely being set for the Hawkesbury/Scone Guineas prep, so whatever he does here, he’ll improve on, but he’s a horse with talent.
Race 6. (14:35) Australian Oaks 2400m
I’m really keen on 2 Gypsy Goddess (Bet Now: $4.60). I’m very forgiving of her run in the Tancred. She had zero chance the way the race was run and given she was near last and had to make a sustained run by herself, the effort was very good. 2400m no issue and if she’s within range 400m out, good luck holding her out.
9 Pink Ivory (Bet Now: $6.50) looks right on track. Not entirely suited by remaining at 1850m at Newcastle in the Tancred but really liked the way she finished her race off. She is one filly who will eat up 2400m and you always have to respect John Sargent with these three year old fillies.
16 Mauricently (Bet Now: $61.00) is a filly with talent I feel for Kris Lees. Hasn’t got the class of some of these but 2400m will be no issue. Blinkers went on leading into the Adrian Knox last Saturday and I thought she worked home pretty well late in the piece behind Honeycreeper. I doubt she wins, but for exotics, I’d entertain her.
Race 7. (15:15) Sydney Cup 3200m
11 Surefire (Bet Now: $6.50) is a horse I’ve been on for some time. Australian debut came over 2000m here and showed god change up speed to win. He then went to the Queens Cup and stuck on very well behind No Compromise, racing like he will eat up two miles. He’s the pony to bet on for me.
4 Stockman (Bet Now: $5.50) brings the A1 form and is weighted to win it. He ran a brave race in the Tancred but was clearly no match for a star in Duais, with a gap to third. He tumbles to 51kg from 59kg of WFA, he loves mud…the query is two miles, but the weight and wet track maybe takes care of that.
13 Chalk Stream (Bet Now: $12.00) is a horse with talent and will have no issue with 3200m. I loved the way he stuck on in the Queens Cup. He was one of the first off the bit but he just kept chipping away and was good in defeat behind No Compromise. Whether this has come up too soon, not sure, but he has talent.
Race 8. (15:55) Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2000m
6 Verry Elleegant (Bet Now: $3.70) is a champion, an all time great and given she likely heads overseas after this, this could her Australian farewell. On face value, I thought she was quite plain in the Ranvet and for the first time in a long time, it looked like she gave up. But, that was said about Nature Strip and then come the Grand Final, he spanked them. This girl could well spank them with conditions to suit.
2 Zaaki (Bet Now: $5.00) is a star. Not 100% sold on him back on genuine wet ground but he brings upside and the A1 form given he bolted up in the All Star Mile, with that form standing up big time in the Doncaster with 1-2-3 using the ASM as their last start form reference. Hard fit at 2000m looks ideal. Just hope he can handle the bog.
8 Montefilia (Bet Now: $8.00) is flying this time in. Good in defeat fresh in the Chipping Norton behind Verry Elleegant. She then turned the tables on her in spades when taking out the Ranvet, making a mess of the champion mare. Could have run in the Tancred but has been kept on ice for this and then have eyes on the Melbourne Cup. Key chance.
Race 9. (16:35) Queen Of The Turf Stakes 1600m
I love 14 Yonce (Bet Now: $7.00). I said after her second career win, she could be better than stablemate Marabi, who at the time was unbeaten and a star in her own right. I think this mare can confirm that status in her own right with a win here. 2000m was a bridge too far I thought at Flemington last time but class got her home. She swims, she’s hard fit and has the Maher/Eustace polish.
3 Icebath… (Bet Now: $5.50) seriously, what does she have to do to win a major? Amazing really that she’s a bridesmaid yet has earned a tick over $4 Million prizemoney. Ran her heart out last Saturday in the Doncaster when a closing third to Mr Brightside. Back to Mares grade, on the back up, she’ll take beating.
17 Barb Raider (Bet Now: $31.00) is a very genuine mare for the Jerome Hunter that will put herself on speed and give her all. Did that in her first two starts this prep, winning them both. Then went to the Sunline where she took on the Mares and stuck on bravely when second to Shout The Bar. She’ll run a bold race I suspect.
Race 10. (17:10) Sapphire Stakes 1200m
This looks a really good set up for 5 Wandabaa (Bet Now: $7.50). Has been kept on ice since the Coolmore Classic where she just struggled at 1500m at that level but far from disgraced behind Lighthouse. Love her back to 1200m, she gets her suitable track and she does have a liking for Randwick. IMO, she only runs well.
8 Emanate (Bet Now: $4.80) is three weeks between runs for James Cummings since racing in the Birthday Card where she made an absolute mess of them from off the speed, drawing clear late to bolt up. Regally bred so her job is done now with a Stakes win, but I think she can go close again.
Not 100% sold on 3 Minhaaj (Bet Now: $7.50) on a bog, but she has to be given another chance. Clear forgive first up in the Oakleigh Plate where she was thankful for plastic running rails, getting badly checked on a number of occasions. If she handles the heavy track, she’s right in the mix.
