An outstanding nine race card was assembled for Randwick on Saturday, where it was Apollo Stakes Day. Winx didn’t make it to the race, but she trialled up super in what was still a great afternoon for all concern. Here are a few blackbookers from the meeting heading forward.

Race Four: ACJC Southern Cross Stakes 1200m:

Was hard to miss the run of Clearly Innocent. Market said he had no hope given the trials and the fact he is being trained up to run a mile for the Doncaster. But you could make a case that with clear air, he probably wins the race. No luck at a vital stage but once he balanced, his finale was beautiful.

Race Seven: Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes 1200m:

I’d want to see Raiment again. A bit unlucky but was out in time to really let down. Loomed to win when clear but just ran out of condition to my eye the last furlong, but was it still a sound return. All credit to the winner. She was wide throughout and did it the hard way for a well deserved blacktype success, but I think looking forward, Raiment is the one to follow.

Race Eight: TAB Light Fingers Stakes 1200m:

Alizee impressive, won as expected, showed an electric turn of foot when Schofield cut back inside. She was out of tickets a furlong out but her class kicked in. Horse I want to follow is Frolic. First up since the Sires, her run was incredible. Spotted them an impossible start yet rattled home to run fourth. Lone filly to break 35 seconds for the final 600m. Has that awful racing pattern, but a big tick for her and trainer Edward O’Rourke.

Race Nine: Mostyn Copper Group Handicap 1200m:

I don’t think this Country Championship is all done and dusted yet re Don’t Give A Damn. Suncraze is in this right to his ears. There were suggestions he might need the run, but the late market support suggested he was good to go. Looked gone 250m out but he showed a great will to win and dived through to get the job done. Another that was out of tickets late but dug in. Sign of a really good horse.

Forget:

Vaucluse Bay- He’s a cat. Becoming far too costly.
King Darci- If he can’t get it his own way, he finds it hard to win. Tough horse, but just doesn’t win often enough.
Addictive Nature- Meow. Enough said.
Eckstein- She can win one of these mares races…but I won’t be with her.
Missile Coda- For now, she’s a midweek horse at best.
